Do you guys tip your groomer? and another question. Being that before Roxie, I never owned a yorkie, nor had a dog that needed a professional grooming, I have no clue about this. With our previous groomer I would always tip her, but is this common practice? I took her to a groomer here from work this morning, and I will pick her up around 3 or so, and I want to make sure that this is ok to do? Also on a different note, the groomer I went to this morning said that Roxies ears needed to be done the "yorkie way" or something like that, which meant shaving the tips I think? We also decided to go with shorter body and longer face, she also said that they shave down the middle of the nose for a neater cleaner look, does all this sound about right? Sorry for the millions of questions. Thanks. |

I'm assuming that she is talking about plucking the inside of the ears and shortening the hair on the outside of the ears to keep the weight off of them. Everything sounds good, and it sounds like you have a good groomer that has good communication. No worries; I'm sure everything will be fine. (: |
I tip my groomer as well. It's so hard to find a good one. Most of the time, the groomer will ask what I want done, instead of making suggestions. I hope that she turns out looking great, as I am sure she will. It sounds like the groomer you have chosen has done a lot of Yorkies. |
Yes, I tip my groomer. And I tip her VERY WELL because she takes excellent care of my babies. To me, that is priceless. Before she started her mobile grooming business she worked as the Salon Manager at our local PetSmart. Being that I don't bordo shot my dogs I would request that she call me 10 mins before she was done so that I could pick up one dog and drop off the next. And she ALWAYS did. She never put my dogs in a cage awaiting my return. If I was a few minutes late, my dogs would be sitting on a groomers lap waiting for me. As for the particulars you mention, it all sounds in order to me also. I do exactly the same thing for two out of three of my dogs. One I leave in full coat. Good luck! |
We tip ours as well....gets kind of pricey since we drop off all 5 at once, but well worth it. I wouldn't trade my groomer for the world. |
I tip my groomer. He is wonderful, and calls when Gio is ready so he doesn't have to go into a crate. He has never been in one, and I don't want to start now. I also tip him very well. Gio has a cotton coat so if there are any little mats forming he will take them out for me in between grooming. |
Yes. :) I found an AMAZING mobile groomer that comes (she does my dads 2 dogs as well) and she is sooo friendly, does exactly what I want, and is good to Jackson. He gets one-on-one time with her in her van, on my driveway, and is done within 45 minutes usually. She always does exactly what I ask of her (I keep Jackson short) and he always looks, smells and feels great. She charges $55 and I tip her $10. I was paying the same amount of money to drop him off somewhere for 4 hours and so a so-so job... so I'm very happy with it. |
Both my kiddos are $45, and I leave $5 each for tip... so in total, I give her $100 per visit. At Christmas, I give her an additional $100 gift. I tipped more when I was going to PetSmart and using a groomer there for a short time, but the lady who grooms mine now is the owner of the business and I always heard you don't tip an owner... however, this feels funny to me, so I still tip but not as much. I have given more in the past for certain things, like when I got back from vacation once they were super knotty, so I gave her extra knowing she had to work harder to untangle them... once when I was changing foods they had impacted anal glands and she took care of that for me, so I tipped her extra since its not a pleasant job and would have cost a lot more if I had to take both to the vet. |
Thanks, I thought it was appropriate to do so. And thanks for easing my mind about the other grooming questions as well. You guys are awesome! |
You should absolutely tip, just like you would your own hair stylist or waiter. I used a mobile groomer and she charged $49. I paid a total of 60, so a little more than 20 percent. She was well worth it. Now, since I have 3, I have invested in some good electric clippers, shears, nail clippers, hands free hair dryer, grooming arm, instructional DVD, etc, to do it myself. I can't believe how much longer it takes me than it used to take her! But, with 3, I really need to economize and although it is time consuming, it really isn't difficult. Just takes the right tools and some practice. But, yes, if you find a great groomer, show them your appreciation and they will always work with you. |
I tip my groomer. He's wonderful!! He also was a vet tech so he will alert me to anything that he thinks needs attention. He treats my little boy so well. |
I tip VERY generously too! I work as a stylist part time and I am not sure how groomers are paid but I work strictly on commission and I sometimes I am supporting myself through tips. It really is a major part of my income.. So when tipping is involved I ALWAYS tip... |
I don't tip mine but I never see her. I carry mine to my vets office and she works there. The associates carry them back and bring them back out so I don't know what she even looks like. |
The place I take Troy to doesn't allow tipping. I've triedonly once, but I do something nice at Christmas. |
Well I just picked her up , her total bill was $35, that was for a bath, groom, bow, nails clipped and teeth brushed. So I tipped them 5 bucks, she seemed surprised that I did..But Roxie looks really good, the only thing I dont like is that they cut her top knot hair and I told them not too, but its not too big of a deal, she still looks fabulous, I really like them because they are so professional and nice. I will post pictures when I get home, she has already managed to get the bow out of her hair. I have her here at work with me, not supposed to , but she is hidden out in my office under my desk , quietly sleeping on my sweater..lol..Oh how I love this dog..lol.. |
The only thing I would question is the shaving of the nose. I understand that once it is done you have to keep doing it. That's what the groomer did for my pup's first cut (she didn't ask by the way, so I had no way of knowing). I do notice that it needs to be done regularly or it grows into her eyes and looks funny. So you might want to think about that. Just a suggestion, I do like how neat it looks when it's shaved though. Otherwise, sounds good. Oh and I would tip also, just like a hairdresser. |
Yes I tip. The girl that groomed Zach was great even though she looked like she was 12 years old. I gave her $10 because anybody who can hold Zach down deserves a large tip. |
I tip $5.00 for each pup. I take all 5 of mine and I bathe them myself so I only have to pay $25.00 instead of $50.00. per dog. That is what I did today.I get there ears tipped and the nose part they shave around the eyes to give them a cleaner look. They look so cute when they are done. |
I tip Daisy's groomer and I tip her very well. Not only does she do a great job but she will do her right away and call me so I can come and get her so she doesn't have to go in a crate. |
hmmm, I hope I haven't been ticking off my groomer all this time, she is very good. I do not tip her. She owns the shop so I figure she would charge what she wants. I tip my hairdresser very well because she does not own the shop and doesn't get to set her price. I have been wrong? Also, she does a great job, but doesn't shave the yorkie's noses. She does shave the maltipoo's nose. Cripes...now I'm confused. |
I tip our groomer. She comes to our house, and sets up her table in the kitchen. Chase is not crazy about getting groomed, so he does not behave. She goes slow with him, and really puts up with alot just to try and make him as stress-free as possible. She has been here 4 hours at times, just for him. She only charges $25 and I used to give her $40. Now with 2, I have only been able to give her $60, but at least Calvin behaves for her. She is so patient with them, and I totally trust her. |
I tip based on how much they need to do. One of mine got matted, so I pre-tipped the gal who does shampoo and comb-out so she would gently take care of the matted hair. She deserved it for the extra work and it was a little extra incentive to be gentle. ;) Usually they don't have that so I just tip the lady who cuts their hair. I've tipped extra when I wanted something extra, like cutting down from floor-length hair. Takes more time, I'll give them extra. Once, they looked especially great and I was just overwhelmed when I saw them, so I tipped extra then for a better than usual job. So, it is not the same each visit. They seem surprised each time I tip, and to tell the truth, I never tipped before reading it in a post on YT a few years back. Maybe I'm the only one doing it in this small town? IDK? But it made sense when I read it and I have been doing it ever since. |
That is awesome. I had to check around to find a groomer that I liked but we finally found one. I tip her happily because she does well with my puppies and she goes the extra mile if they act nervous. She does not rush through it. But mine only go there every once in awhile. The maintenance stuff I do in between. Baths, nails, things like that. |

One of the ways that we try to "help" out the owner is by never using a credit, check, or debit card. We generally write a check. The reason is so that the shop owner doesn't have to pay the processing and transaction fee. Those can run between 1-3%. |
I had a new lady groom the babies the last time! She did a great job! She cut their nails, expressed their glands, bathed and clipped and she only charged me 60.00 for both girls. I gave her a 10.00 tip! I am so happy to have found her! The name of her business is "The Fur Face Place". How cute is that??!!:p |
I didn't tip my groomer last time, but recommended her profusely on Facebook. She said she really appreciated that. she knows I'm broke and Harley gets all my love an attention, I think when I send him for his christmas photo grooming, i'll bring her a gift card, or tip or something. |

I also tip my groomers. She is the owner, as well. She charges me $45.00 for cut, wash, teeth brushing and nail trimming. I always go well above the recommended 20% tipping. But why should I???? Why do we really tip? (Sorry, had to vent) |
Yes, Marge and I do tip well. Marge washes Max before she brings her in, and waits for her at the groomer, so Max always goes to the top. Carlo does not get any hair cut, but does get a complete wash, nails, teeth, and that is a lot of work! |
