I hope this isn't a dumb question.. There is a woman who comes into my job on occasion (I work in a bar) and she sells flowers, bears etc. Anywho, one night we were talking and she tells me that she sells Yorkies. I've been seeing this woman for about 3yrs now and just recently called her up inquiring about her dogs. I've read up about Puppy Mills and I def. dont' want to purchase from someone like that. But with her..I don't know. She told me she's been breeding Yorkies for 22yrs. She currently has 12 that she breeds. She told me that at some point or another one of the dogs is having puppies, so she always has them for sale. She also told me that from time to time she will cross breed her yorkies and another dog (to make a "morkie"). She doesn't charge much for her dogs $500. I asked her about microchipping and she told me, "I dont' do that. If your dog gets lost I dont want it coming back to me" The only really helpful info she told me about is hypoglycemia. And making sure the new doggie always has food out. I feel like, I know the answer to my question but I'd really like for you all to fill me in. Again, please no flaming. I so dont' want this to go about this all the wrong way. |
If your question is~should you purchase a puppy from this woman I would say absolutely not. She is a puppy mill in the making. She mixes breeds, sells on the cheap, doesn't want to ever see them again. Quote:
Not sure why you would think there would be flaming involved in responses to your question. It's legitimate to want opinions about a decision about adding a new puppy to your family. :) |
She sounds like a breeder that is just in it for the money |

I just wasn't in the mood for the possibility of a smart @ss remark. But yeah, I kinda got that vibe but I felt like I should ask the pros just in case. |

Doesn't Microchip. AKC requires that now. Doesn't want them coming back to her. A responsible breeder always wants that, if one should need to be rehomed or lost. Save your money a bit longer and find a puppy from a responsible/reputable breeder. You buy your breeder first then your puppy. Your breeder should be there for you for the rest of that puppy's life. |
breeds 12 yorkies at a time? And cross breeds? Yeah RUN. You can find a AKC, microchipped, HEALTHY yorkie for that price. I did. Keep searching. |
I know it is tempting since the price is right. But it sounds like she probably doesn't do a lot of health testing and probably no health guarantee. So a good priced puppy could end up costing you a lot more in money and heartache. As someone who has bought from a pet store and a byb before it's very easy to get a sick puppy that will cost you thousands of dollars in vet bills. I know the right baby is out there for you. Just do like you are and research the sellers and wait for the right one. |
I'd look for a rescue in your area, it's more affordable assuming you find a rescue that doesn't have huge obvious vet bill requirements. Insure it so that if it gets sick it's covered, and you can love and rehabilitate a dog that needs a home, then some day when you have the dollars, you can buy one from a reputable breeder. (btw I'm not for or against buying from I breeder or rescuing.. I've bought from an amazing breeder, and had a great time, but if you can't afford to go with a breeder, saving a sick or homeless puppy is better than supporting a breeder who is appearing to only be in it for the money. |

Hey i was trying to find the part of about mandatory micro-chipping and all i found was in indiana.. thats the only place that looks mandatory "We believe, however, that the final decision about identification—whether by collar, tattoo or microchip—should be made by the owner, not the government" but maybe you found some more current info please pass my way because i hadnt heard about this and i want to be prepared and updated THANKS ok reading more...says its "the proposed set of laws would require: " so its not not a law yet? it seems again the rules are for indiana not sure??? so are they working on getting all the states on board? sorry not trying to be a pain but new to AKC and want to make sure i do things right thanks!!! |

By "we" do you mean you. We still have to identify via License, the government requires rabies. By the way in since you quoted me, the "Hey" was addressing me wasn't it? Not being rude but, I do have a name. |
Run! Run as fast as you can. |
She does not seem to really care about the dogs, maybe the money, I personally would not buy from her |
