Anyone ever have problems with bringing you Yorkie with you anywhere? I recently decided to take Patrón to Biology lecture (Only 30 students) and he just sat inside my large messenger bag all class and chewed on his bully stick. He did finally get noticed (I do sit in the front row also) after my professor saw my bag have pointy ears popping out at the end of class. Does anyone ever have problems taking their Yorkie out anywhere? Walmart? Malls? I mean we all know we would love to take them everywhere like a child but what is the limits. Sorry if this seems to be an idiotic thing to be asking but I am curious. Thanks! |
Yes got kicked out of Sam's. Had one of my puppies wrapped in a blanket and just needed to run in for one item and got busted. You are not allowed to bring them into any store that sells food from what I understand. |
I took her into Party City and was asked to take her out (and not very nicely). Other than that, we took her into Office Max and had no problem, and we take her to Petsmart. I don't feel like dealing with hassles, so I usually don't try to bring her too many places with me. |
Anyplace that serves or sells food items - it's against federal law to take them in. Therefore, you could get kicked out. Also, some places that don't serve or sell food have posted on their door that dogs are not allowed. Most places are not a problem though. I think it's nice you took your pup to class. There was someone else here that used to take theirs in a bag to class, too.:D |
I think it depends on who you are dealing with. I have taken mine to Academy, Atwoods, Movie rental places, my hair salon, etc. I have never been told to take her out but I do not take her where food is sold. However, if they did not have a sign posted and they did not sell food, if they asked me rudely to leave I am not sure I would ever go back. That is just how I am. My mom always said two things 1) You attract more flies with honey than vinegar 2) Treat others how you would want to be treated. I found out when I got older that my mom is a pretty smart woman. |
I try not to take Lucky out as much only to usually the petstores....I just want to avoid my giving a "what do you mean, he can't come in? Look how sweet and clean he is" look to the person telling me to leave! lol I take it personally when they say 'it's a dog'....it's not a dog....he's my furbaby!!:confused: and I know I'm not the only one that gets offended when they are told that!! So, I just keep Lucky's shopping for when he can come to the petstore with me.....;) |

Oh my!! you take your baby to class with you? I have never tried it I think it would be very frowned upon. Did your professor say anything? I know my professors would notice our class sizes are only around 10! But i have been kicked out of target, and wlamart as well :) |
In CA you can not bring a dog into a hair salon. We own a salon and we never ask anyone to take their dog out. Actually, we have dog treats for them. I have been asked to leave Home Depot. I still take her in - it just depends on the person working at the time. Sometimes they are just jerks. I took Gina into Sports Authority and some dumb women (shopper) said really loudly, "There's a dog in here!" It was like, "yeah, so what!" Cherie |
Couver and Khloe go everywhere with me. I try not to take them to places where food is served, but occasionally they do go hidden in their bag. They both ride together in one of their Kwigy Bo Alex bags. They have been to every store in our city, and I have taken them to class with me before. The only place I have had issues with is Costco... I had Couver and just wanted to grab something really quickly, but they noticed my large bag and asked me to leave. I say just buy a nice bag, and try to only go to places that don't serve food :) |

haha! I'm with everyone else on that one. I take Kaji with me everywhere I possibly can. I think it sucks for him to be cooped up at home all the time. He so patiently waits for me to get home from work Mon to Fri, so the weekend I try to plan places where he can go. I take him everywhere, especially places that don't sell food. I usually go to pet feed stores, petsmarts, old navy, and ross since he can walk right in and it's never an issue. |

Wow that is a strange law. But there are many places with strange laws. Mine goes with me and sits in my lap the entire time. My hair dresser loves her. I am glad she gets to go. It is just another place I can show her off. :D |

I have taken Bentley to Barnes and Noble, Home Depot, Lowes, Petsmart, Agway, the Post Office...I don't take him to places that sell food. |
I live somewhat rurally and when it was just Hot Rod, I took him everywhere. I only ever got asked to leave Target--and not so very nicely either. I didn't/don't have a problem being asked to leave, but they were very rude. I was only in the $1.00 section of the front of the store and the security guard yelled across the store. I asked if I could pay for what I had in the cart as I really needed 1 of the items that I had in the cart and he begrudginly said okay and then the cashier was just as nasty in telling me that I needed to leave. I told her that I was already asked to leave and that they said it was okay to pay for my items and she would not stop saying that I had to leave. If I didn't need this one item, I would have probably told her off saying that the sooner she stopped lecturing me and cashed me out, the sooner I would be leaving!!! Other than that, Hot Rod was/is welcomed everywhere else we've been. I did sneak him in his carrier into the grocery store to pick up a prescription and all the cashiers wanted me to take him out and they even yelled out to the customer service people to come over to see him. 2 managers of 2 different Tuesday Morning stores say that hethey are always welcome in thier stores. One of the Joann's stores has 1 employee who does not like them other than that, everyone else loves it when I bring them in.:) I would not mind if someone asked me to leave a store that I was not supposed to be in--especially if I did not know I wasn't supposed to be their, but it can be done nicely. :) |

I agree 100% |
I take Gatsby to class everyday unless im going straight to or from work then i dont but if i am only working a short shift like 4-5 hours i take him to work with me I dont like to have him out of the house for more then 4 hours because i feel its too much stress |
I have taken Bella to the post office, hardware stores, Home Depot, Menards, Rurual King, Target last week (no one said a word), Once upon a child, Pamida (which is a small version of what used to be small Wal-mart), bank. Tomorrow, we are going to town, we will be going to Menards, a carpet center, and maybe a furniture store. She is going with us. I will put her in her pouch and off we go. I'm thinking here in Indiana it's against the law also to take pups in a hair salon. My girl has two yorkies and the only time she has the in her shop is when it's closed. But it is hers. |
Last week I took Tallulah to the beauty parlor while I got my acrylic nails filled. Everybody fawned over her, but I don't think I will take her back because I became really aware of the chemical fumes and dust from the nail polishing. Today we took her to tour a new senior center, including a pancake breakfast, a car restoration shop ( where I realized I couldn't put her on the ground anywhere because of antifreeze and other toxic stuff that might have leaked, the cemetery to lleave flowers for George's father, and the grocery store. I had her in a Sherpa Monaco bag when we went inside and she didn't make a peep. Good news on the car travel front - she got carsick the day I brought her home in a pet carrier, but today she rode in her carseat for about 120 miles and did great. |
While O usually don't take Farrah to food places, I am allowed to take her to Jenny Craig. My rep has a yorkie also. : ) |
I smuggled Harley into work with me the other day (I'm a marker for my professor) and she loved him... I was waiting outside her office for a while, and my bag started to move, and she looked at me funny, than ran and closed her door so he could come out, now we're going to arrange a play date for our boys... I've been tempted to take Harley to class, but all my classes are 1.5-3 hours, and I usually have 2 or 3 together. boo. but I'm definitely ok taking him places with me. Walmart has kicked me out before. I've had him in government offices too... He's always allowed in gas stations with me, even if they sell food. They all bring him treats. I think they understand that dogs can't be left alone in a car. He also comes every week to the bank with me too. |
If you have them concealed in a bag - how would anyone know? I have taken mine to the supermarket, Target, the library - without a peep out of them. No one even knows that they are there. |
I do understand the health laws; however, I do think it odd small dogs are banned from grocery stores (other than service dogs) after seeing many of the people that are there handling the produce. Sorry, my dog is cleaner than a large percentage of the people I see "allowed" into stores...probably without their vaccinations to boot!! lol I never have a problem in my store though, but I am respectful of others and only take her in when I'm shopping quickly and I stay away from the meat and produce sections when I have them with me. Once (in another type of store) I was told someone (another clerk) add allergies to dogs and I asked if that was the only reason I would have to take the dog out (that it would bother the person with allergies) and they said yes, so I said, oh, then no worries, she's hypoallergenic and went about my shopping. They just turned and left. I know, it was kinda the principle of the matter as someone that smelled to high heaven and was about as filthy as filthy gets was standing a few feet away.:animal-pa |
Ok...here's an update. Today we went shopping again. Menards, the same one I went to last week. We were all over the store, and then went to the garden supply area. The girl/cashier that was out there said quietly, you're not suppose to have her in here. Funny thing we walked by customer service as we entered the store and all the cash registers. No one said a word. We also went to Lowes, Rural King, and a carpet store. All was good. |
I am so glad to see so many comments and stories. Tomorrow I am going to take Patrón with me to my Sociology lecture hall and see what happens. I have been taking him to campus a lot more lately and he has been a little showstopper when walking around. I am starting to get known as the guy with the Yorkie all around the campus. :) |

I don't have an issue with keeping her away from grocery stores, stores that carry food, etc., but a hardware store? Honestly, what will she hurt? |
I take Khloe to work with me. I am an IT consultant, and I told my accounts that I was thinking about getting a Yorkie prior to actually getting her, and asked them if it would be an issue for her to tag along as long as she wasn't destructive, aggressive, etc. and everyone said it would be fine. I was very thankful. And everyone is very sweet to her when they have a chance to see her (as I usually go on-site after business hours to avoid interrupting the business day). |
