What Sounds Excite Your Yorkie? Annie is only 3 1/2 months old and already she has a sound that makes her come running! I like to buy those little individual serving ice cream cartons. When she hears me scraping the bottom/sides, she comes a running. She knows she will get to lick the spoon of the last few melted drops of ice cream. I can't let her have too much -- don't want to upset her tummy or spoil her appetite for kibble (although I am not sure you could spoil this girl's appetite!) but a few drips for her to lick from the spoon can't hurt. She sure does love it! She knows her name too. She likes to go sleep on my bed when I am busy and she can't have my lap. There is a ramp in there for the dogs to get up and down. She will be sleeping up on my bed and hear me mention her name on the other side of the house -- and here she comes, flying down that hall, sure a treat must be getting handed out! I just love this little girl! What joy she has brought to our home! When my Jack Russell hears the pool cleaner come on, she goes half crazy. She loves to go out and stalk that pool cleaner as it moves around the pool. It's tail occasionally flips up out of the water and she tries to catch it. We go through a lot of foam end pieces for that tail! This is one more reason mine can't go out alone. Rattle a treat bag and all of mine come running. They seem to know the exact sound of those bags too! I can rattle potato chips bags, cookie or cracker bags, nothing. But rattle a treat bag and here they come! The word OUTSIDE is also an instant excitement! They start jumping, running to the door and making circles. You would think they hadn't been outside all day the way they react. Never fails to excite them. They know my son's name too. When he is home and I ask "Where's Dustin?" they all start looking for him and then jump all over him when they find him. Before the hurricane took out all of our trees, we used to get squirrels in the yard. All of the dogs loved to chase those squirrels. They couldn't catch them but they never tired of trying. If we said the word "squirrel" they would all get excited and go half crazy waiting for me to open the door. I sort of miss that but since I found squirrels are a big carrier of fleas, I am glad they are gone. Are there other specific sounds/words that your dogs know and understand? Do they get excited about any sound in particular? |
Hammer loves the sound of his hidden Zhu Zhu pet! hehe, he goes nuts trying to find it! |
Well, not much makes my girl bark. Let's see...if she is in the backyard and the to little kids next door come out, she will bark or if some is out for a walk in road, then she'll go nuts barking. Otherwise, she doesn't even bark if the doorbell rings, she will just run to the door and turn in circles for "hold" and I pick her up. She does the yorkie dance when daddy comes in from the garage after work and when her big sissy comes (my daughter). She is a really calm girl...her excitement is shown by doing the spin, spin, spins. Sometimes, I try to get her to bark and she looks at me like, oh please...you talk enough for the both of us. LOL. |
Too cute:) We can't do anything in the kitchen without our gang running in to investigate - LOL! The sound of the front door opening is another kicker - they are sure it must be time to go for a walk around the neighborhood:) |
Sirens. The first time Kacee and her sister were taken outside, four sirens came by their home. What luck! She used to be scared and HOWL! Now, she just howls, which I suppose indicates she may be scared. I just tell her it's all right. The word: WALK She goes nuts. If she hears me say it, her little head flips around and she'll look me straight in my eyes.:D |
Mine know the sound of the cookie jar opening. They drop what ever they are doing and come running. |
Things that will get my bunch going: The questions "Who's there?" and "Where's the squirrel?" The sound of a treat bag and squeek of a toy brings them running. The most amazing thing is the bark all the dogs have for back up. They all recognize that bark in each other and when it means there is something good outside to bark at. One dog could be outside and when the call goes out, all the dogs go running. |
Well , this may sound crazy, but Phoebe goes nuts when she hears a honey bun wrapper!!! I have opened up several snacks in the same kind of paper , but she knows the difference. |
Outside is a big one here..they all run to the door, bark like crazy and turn in circle until the door opens. Treats, is another that will cause a stampede to the kitchen. In the evening, I can say, "lets lay down" and they all run and jump on the couch and wait for me to snuggle. As far as barking..wew, we are working on this...we moved into an apartment over our office 3 years ago and own a Self Storage facility...so, we have alot of traffic. They lay in the window that overlooks the main gate. They will bark everytime a new customer comes in..funny, they know the customers vehicles that have been here awhile;) |
the treat bag or my parents, or the front door. LOL. |
Wyatt goes nuts when there is a dog on TV or when the M&M commercial comes on when they are running on the checkout counter away from being put in the grocery bag. He goes totally out of control and gets everyone barking in unison. |
I forgot about the doorbell! Even realistic doorbells on TV. They will not leave me alone, until I go open the front door and show them no one is there. :) |
My yorkie is a cheese fiend. She doesn't care when I get bread, butter, bagels, whatever out of the fridge, but if she hears the bag of cheese she bolts to the kitchen. :) Noises that drive her nuts... cats meowing, plastic bags being crinkled, and me woofing at her. :) |
Motorcycles get mine wound up. There is a greenbelt behind us, motorcycles aren't supposed to be back there but when they are my two will take the stairs two at a time. The pool cleaner makes a sucking sound when it comes out of the water, you would think they would kill it if they could get it. We go through a lot of the black things that go on the tail. |
Sounds Levi loves: his name, the sounds of his ID tags jingling (meaning I have his collar and harness in my hands and we are going somewhere), the words "park," "go," "outside," and "treat." Sounds Levi hates: the doorbell makes him go nuts every time...even when the doorbell sound is just on TV! |
my little one goes mad at the door bell, sayin max my sisters dogs name, and is your auntie fay or daddy coming lol :p |
Chewie goes bonkers anytime the phone rings or someone knocks on the door. He can be sound asleep, and as soon as he hears either of those sounds, he's on his feet and going nuts! |
The top 2 for Sunshine are any cellophane being wrinkled , and the door bell. Baby summer just looks at him like he is crazy hehehe |
Roxie will jump up and bark if she hears sirens or the doorbell. She will come running if she hears the ice maker on the fridge or any container that sounds like it might be her treats. I swear she can HEAR peanut butter too :D If I take out the jar and put it on the counter, she will come running before I have even opened it! |
"treat!" all I have to do is say it and he comes running no matter what he's doing. Or when I rattle the cat treats, cause when one gets a treat the other does as well.. |
Oh, and my cellphone right "whoop whoop, that means your phone is ringing" he starts barking and going crazy, lol, so I get a double ring when I'm home :D |
Ha! Tink barks and chases airplanes! Barks when I call any other of my doggie's names... and the cats! We don't have a working doorbell, but when she hears one on TV she tears off to the door! She barks non stop at me when I'm talking on the phone.. If I say 'Here Kitty Kitty' Peek a Boo comes a running! Or 'Treat'. He's so bad... I don't think he knows his name.... he never comes when I call him! Sapphire and Infinity go nuts if there's puppies on TV. Run into the middle of the room and look at each other...'You got puppies? I don't have puppies... but I heard puppies so you must have puppies. Where's the puppies?'! Then they run all over the house looking for puppies. Infinity will bust her butt trying to get on my lap when I'm at the computer and play a Yorkie Video! She likes to watch them too! |
My little boy Buzz, anticipates that I'm going to grind coffee beans, and starts barking, even before I turn it on...there's just something about that sound that makes him bark...Of course, sometimes, the sound of a breeze will make him bark...He just likes the sound of his own voice...lol |
All Roxie has to hear is "you wanna go outside" or "you wanna anything..lol..and she goes nuts, I dont think she knows the difference but knows shes going somewhere..lol.. |
Meal Time & Treat Time. Not even a sound has to be made, they have an internal clock. When that time approaches they all go nuts. Anyone at the door they all go nuts. Mmmm what they hear me loading up the car for a dog show. They run around barking as if to say "Am I going, is it my turn". I have one boy that when he sees my hubby in a suit, he puts his self in a show stack. I guess he thinks anyone in a suit is a judge. |

Oops! The coffee grinder throws my dogs into a tizzy. |
Well last night I was watching a tv program, and the actress was going through labour, moaning, and groaning; then Zoey on the floor beside my feet, started moaning and crying, it was hilarious; I wish that I had had my video camera handy. Any bag that crinkles they come running all of them even the cat. Every time I get up to feed them, they yip in anticipation (although I'm not sure how they know that this time when I get up I'm going to the kitchen to feed them their meals). When I make kissey sounds with my mouth, Razz comes running and jumps up in my lap for kisses. Doorbells ringing, dogs barking on tv, or my puter when I look at videos. Jingle of their leads. Where's Daddy? They all jump up and run up and down the stairs until they find him. He of course gives them treats |
All I have to say is "Look What I Have" and all four of my dogs come running. |
The word walk drives my two crazy. We have to spell the word around them if it's not actually time to go for a walk. Also, if I say I see some cows they go nuts. Mardelin--Just picturing your little boy stacking when he sees your husband in a suit puts a big grin on my face. That is too cute.:D |
