Weight of a Teacup At what weight is not considered a Teacup? Like is it 4 pounds, 6 pounds? Thanks :aimeeyork |
Hi! Welcome to Yorkie Talk if I didn't get to welcome you before :-) Teacup is kind of a loaded term around here, but you DEFINETELY get the benefit of the doubt since you are new around here. There is actually no such thing as a "teacup" Yorkie. It's a misnomer leftover from the "teacup poodle" days. Yorkie standard is 4-7 pounds, there just happens to be smaller Yorkies and larger Yorkies. Some people refer to the Yorkies under 4 pounds as "Tinies". Yorkies are a "Toy" breed dog. I think sometimes that's were the confusion lies. I have people ask me all the time if my Pippa is a teacup....sometimes I explain, sometimes I'm just too tired...LOL I'm sure more will have their 2cents. Let's be friendly, everyone!! :) |
Hrmm the weight of a teacup? I guess it would depend on what brand of teacup it is, and what material it is made of. Ceramic, porcelin, etc. I'll go home & check in my cupboard tonight & weigh mine for you. :) :p |
I can't remember how many people have asked me if Heidi is a tea cup Yorkie because she is only 3 lb. I just say no, she is a Yorkshire Terrier plain and simple. S/W |
I understand that there is no such thing as a 'teacup' Yorkie. But let's say you do have a Yorkie that weighs in under the 4-7 pound standard according to the AKC and the Gods that be. What terminology is acceptable when describing that individual dog, if teacup is not acceptable? I always take 'teacup' to simply mean 'smaller than standar.' What would be the politically correct description? |

If they are over 7 lb. I never hear anyone refering to them as beer mug Yorkies. Just kidding LOL |

I prefer to use the term tiny. I say she is a Yorkshire Terrier or Yorkie - if they ask why she is so small then I just say she is a tiny little one. |

When we go out, we get asked alot about the difference in size between our girls - as Magic is so petite compared to Sailor. We normally just explain that Magic is on the smaller side of the breed standard and Sailor is at the other end of the breed standard. Sometimes people continue to refer to "teacups" - but instead of getting into that conversation with everyone, we normally just refer to Magic as the runt of her litter (which she was). |
