Everyone always asks me if Coco is a teacup and I just tell them that she's just extra small. She's under 4 lbs. I think under 4 lbs is considered to be a tiny yorkie. |
I think that people that are not experienced yorkie owners and don't know about the tabu word "teacup" should not be blasted anytime they use that term. The standard is 4-7 lbs but most people that don't know anything about yorkies don't know this, so they see "small" and just think "teacup". Whenever people ask me if my Miko is teacup, I just shrug it off, and say "no he's just on the smaller end of the standard and move on. |
I don't think people who use the term "teacup" should be blasted for it. Heck...I see things in magazines and on the net that refer to teacups...last night when looking at patterns...I think it was simplicity...they had patterns for teacup puppies. There may be no such thing as a teacup puppy, but there sure are a lot of things out there that refer to teacups. I think it's gotten to be a commonly used term and I don't think it's going to go away. |
I think people would like to have a tiny or small Yorkie but it does not always work out that way. If Heidi were 10 lb. I would love her just as much. I was at a show a couple of years back and a lady had an 11 week old yorkie and it was already close to 7 lb. She said she wished that she could have one as small as Heidi as she held it in her arms. I said to her, do you love your Yorkie and she said Yes, well I said that's all that matters isn't it. She left the show feeling much better that day. S/W |

Yes, And we love them all!!! :D :D |
How about we use the term Mini :D instead of the term 'teacup' it is a dumb term for such cuties! I think it sounds alot better than the runt :rolleyes and besides are they really using a teacup or a fancy oversize coffee set? all of the babies I have seen sitting in a cup seem to be an illusion  has anyone actually measure the circumference of a teacup?? not trying to start a rucus or say those that consider that term just currious? : |

Sometimes I get the question "Is she a miniature Yorkie?" most people don't want a lecture on yorkie terminology or their breed standards, so I just say she's just a little one. Some people are truly interested in the difference in sizes, and if they really asking alot of questions I will enlighten them but for the most part people don't really care, they are just making conversation. My best guess, if there was such athing as a teacup Yorkie is it would weigh under the low end of the breed standard which is 4-7 pounds. |

there's so many things in our lives that are small. for example a tea cup,a coke can or a ginger jar...can you imagine: look at my little coke can yorkie? ha ha! then their would be those who would argue that their's was a diet coke can yorkie!!! :) :) |
So this is what I don't understand..If everyone is using the alternative word for teacup, as tiny, mini, runt, or extra small, what's the difference really? Just a disclaimer, I would NEVER buy from a breeder that advertised teacups, nor do I call my little girl a teacup. But I'm just curious about alllll the fuss over A WORD??!!...it's like saying shoot or sh*t..it means the same thing, it is just a nicer way of saying it. |
i just refer to them as "tiny yorkies" an adjective describing the size of something is much different than giving them a whole new "name" i just quoted myself...ha ha, that felt odd! :) :) :) :) it really doesnt bother me anymore how anyone chooses to refer to a yorkie...i personally dont call them teacups because it has become a term breeders tend to use to jack up the price. First off I am really enjoying reading this thread. Some off your replys have had me rolling on the floor. I don't get upset with anyone when they ask me if Mac is a teacup. He only weighs 2lbs 15 oz. and is only 9 inches long from head to tail (if that). What bothers me is when they ask me what happened to Mellie why is she so big? Shes 4 1/2 lbs and about 13" long. Hey what do they think she looks like and elephant. Personally I do wish mac was bigger I worry about him so much. Especially since he was so sick as a baby. I tell them him he's just a midget. |
