Fireworks. So that time of year is here again and soon people will start to set off fireworks. How do you babies react to fireworks? My schnauzer cross has always been terrified of them, she will pace the house and cry.. she will try and get under all the beds, hide in cupboards and climb on the top of chairs. Its a nightmare. This will be the first time Poppy has heard fireworks and im hoping she isnt as bad with them as Jess is, although im worried Jess will set her off. We got Jess from a family who used to let her roam the streets :( so im thinking this is why she is as bad as she is with them because she would have been outside when they were being set off. Poor thing. :( I really wish supermarkets wouldnt sell them here, they have started already and it will probably go on until after new year!:thumbdown Anyway how is your furbabies with fireworks? |
Charlie hates them..he will run and hide and I'm not sure about Natalie...guess we will see when they start setting them off at the house. |
Lucky for me fireworks are year round here, so Rizzo doesn't pay them any mind, unless a really really loud one goes off and he's outside. Though thunder is a different story, as soon as it starts to rumble he flips out...he tried to dig his way under me one stormy night, woke up to his little paws digging at my back. Maybe try to give her a really yummy treat when the fireworks start up? or play with her to distract her when they start up, she's young enough that she should be able to be distracted at a whim...good luck, I hope it's not too bad of an experience for you guys. |
Gatsby is terrified of them i had to take him home. Next year I am going to give him some serene-um for like a week before the fireworks and try again. my new vet said that its best to try and desensitize them to there fears so im gonna buy a thunder shirt and a new pack of serene-um. just for everyone information ill post the links for serene-um and thunder shirts Dog Behavior Aids: Calming: Serene-Um Drops and Tablets at DrsFosterSmith.com ![]() |
Beamer and Lil Bit aren't afraid of them. But they do set them off barking. Yes, will soon be Guy Fawkes day - bonfires, treacle toffee, parkin, sparklers, Catherine wheels etc. - Have fun:) |
Chachi is unaffected by them. Jewels my more nervous yorkie pants and paces during them. Luckily the only time we really deal with them is the 4th of july. |
Jackson HATES them. He also hates gunshots (we live with a 90 acre farmfield behind us where they are constantly shooting birds, deer, whatever is in season). He goes and just hides under the bed. I brought Jackson to Gettysburg with me for Fourth of July and mistakenly thought he'd be okay with the fireworks since they were far away... he just did not like them. So I had to take him back to the hotel room and he hid under the chair until they were over. Poor guy. My aunt's Lab died after having a heart attack over fireworks on 4th of July. She freaked herself out SO bad, ran away from home, and one of the neighbors caught her. By the time she got into the house, she had a spazm and died! Craziest thing ever. My uncles Siberian Husky also used to RUN... we lost her for over a day one time because she ran away. |
I keep forgetting most of you are in the USA and dont celebrate Guy Fawkes. Anyway Guy Fawkes is on the 5th November but they have started the fireworks already, they usually last until new year. I love watching the displays but I feel so sorry for the poor dogs. :( |
Tara, my 13 yr old pek, will go hide. Ally is not really bothered by them. Tia is terrified and will try to climb to your head for someone to 'save' her. The July fireworks set her off and now she is afraid of thunder and associates the word 'rain' with thunder. If I say the word, she comes running. |
Mocha just ignores them. He experienced his first one at 8 months old during 4th of July. Fortunately, our city sent out mailers to all residents close to the firework site warning them about dog reactions. Apparently every year the city had to deal with lost dogs after fireworks. I live pretty close to the fireworks show and can see from my window. I was prepared though. I held my baby close 15 minutes before it is scheduled to start just in case. The first sound startled him and he jumped, but I held him and told him it's nothing. Even took him to go see by the window. After about 5 minutes of the show he lost interest and started sleeping on my chest. The fireworks went on and on that night and Mocha went about his normal business, even when I took him outside to potty. |
Its only once a year when the fireworks are sold here in iceland, that is new years eve. He has been with me through two new years, the first time he didnt do anything, was just really calm , the second one he was terrified! I hope he doesnt go as scared the next time . People are shooting up fireworks for days before and after new years, i hate it, last time Fido didnt do his buisness outside for two days cause he was so afraid to go outside  I could'nt even get him to go to a walk, and walking is what he loves the most. |
My two are both unaffected by fireworks. We actually take them to the fireworks on the river, so this may be why. They both slept on the blanket with us during the fireworks this year :) |
Both of mine get scared and need to be in my lap. I turn the TV up to try an drown out the sound and it works sometimes. |
during new years, we all ran out to watch the big finale - and i grabbed manolo to celebrate and to watch the fireworks and she was going nuts. it was soooo hilarious, but i'm pretty sure she was more frightened then anything. as the fireworks would appear in the sky and explode it she acted like they were coming after her. |
My dogs seem to bark at fireworks, but not for the whole show. I just got a "Thundershirt" which is supposed to help with fireworks. Maybe that could be worth a try for you. They have a money-back guarantee so they seem to be pretty confident! |
