I am new to Yorkie Talk and just thought I would do a general post. I haven't gotten my little Sadie yet, I have two weeks left before she will be 6 weeks old and can come home with me. I am so excited I can't hardly wait. So if anyone has any pointers, or stories you would like to share with me about when you got your little baby, I would love to hear. Also if you have any suggestions on how to potty train I would greatly appreciate that too. :)

Oh my! my advise is talk your breeder into keeping her til she is at least 12 weeks. No way should she leave her mother at 6 weeks:(

That is way too young. Most states have laws preventing puppies being sold before 8 weeks. Unfortunately Georgia does not have laws covering puppies.

I would be very wary of any breeder selling puppies at that age.

They still need to be learning from their mother.

I'm sorry guys I meant 2 weeks left until she is 8 weeks old, typo. But is that still too early. I know the breeder very well and it is her first litter, but I don't think she would do anything to harm the puppies. But your advise is very much appreciated:)

I doubt she would do anything to intentionally harm the puppies, but it is harmful in a way to let them go at such an early age.
Yorkies are way different than other breeds and they shouldn't be sold until they are 12 weeks old.

your right i did, cause at the time I thought she was 4 weeks, but I contacted my breeder she let me know that she is 6 weeks, so that is my fault for miscommunication:) i corrected my blog though, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

8 weeks is still too early for a Yorkie. Please, ask your friend to keep her until she is 12 weeks old - and just visit her lots until then. If she is a friend and wants to be a responsible breeder she will hold on to her until she is 12 weeks old.

"THE WEANING PERIOD: WEEKS 3-7

At this age, your puppy is starting to learn dog behavior. Its at this age that your puppy learns how to be a dog. The mother plays a large role in this stage. The mother will teach your puppy bite inhibition. Meaning, if your puppy starts to nip too hard, the mother will usually let out a growl, snarl, or even snap at the puppy. These are all parts of learning process that every puppy goes through. Your puppy will also learn bite inhibition from playing with their litter mates. When a puppy is playing with a fellow litter mate, you will likely hear yelps and screams while the puppies are playing. This is perfectly normal and part of the learning process which teaches your puppy not to bite so hard. This stage in your puppies life is very important. Never buy a dog from a breeder that releases puppies before 7 weeks of age. Again, if you are looking for a toy breed dog, I would not take your puppy home until they are 10-12 weeks of age. Taking your puppy home too early can cause future complications such as:

1. Aggression towards other dogs

2. Difficulty house training

3. Separation anxiety

4. Excessive barking

5. Biting the owner

6. Nervousness

7. An unhealthy attachment to humans

Seeing as it's your friends first liter you could help her out a lot by explaining how important it is for her to keep the pups until they are 12 weeks old. The pups learn so much from their mother and you will likely end up with a lot of behavioral issues on your end if you get her at that young age unfortunately. What is your friends reasoning for wanting to give them away that early? Since it's your friend she'll probably listen to you but it would be harmful to the pups. Keep us updated on what she says:)

As far as when you do get her home do you have a food picked out? That was a big issue for us with our first yorkie. Also, and harness is a must instead of a collar and a crate and probably a ex-pen and of course lots of toys:)

thanks for the welcome:) I have talked to the breeder and she told me that she was sorry that she wasn't more aware of when yorkies should be given a home. She has happily agreed to letting Sadie and all her other brothers and sisters stay with their mommy till they are 12 weeks. Thanks again, you have helped not only one person learn something new but two:) I will def post pics when I go to visit little Sadie and when she comes home.

No i don't have the food picked out, do you have any recommendations? I do have a crate and toys. Why a harness instead of a collar?

That's awesome!! And you helped all the potential people who would have had issues with their puppies if they came home too early too... go you!!!:thumbup: It's also great that your breeder was willing to listen.

Collapsing trachea (or collapsed trachea) is a common condition in small and toy breeds.

I feed Acana and I personally think it's the best lol. Wellness can be found at pretty much all petstores and it's a good food too. Don't get any brand that is sold at a grocery store- they're all corn and by-products and fillers. Search on here for a thread about food....there's a TON!!!! Were you thinking kibble, raw, or wet? We feed Acana kibble and Nature's Variety raw for breakfast every couple days.

A harness is super important because yorkies are susceptible to collapsed tracheas and the harness puts the pressure on their chest instead of their neck and throat. Puppia is the harness brand we use but you can search threads on here for suggestions on harnesses. I know someone on here makes step in harnesses (chattiesmom?)

Did you know that the YTCA (Yorkshire Terrier Club of America) requires Yorkie breeders to keep puppies until they are at least 12 weeks old? If your puppy comes home at 6 or 8 weeks she will miss many important lessons in socialization that I promise you will regret later. Just do a search for "biting" or "bite inhibition" and you will pull up tons of threads from owners trying to teach their puppy not to bite them because they were not taught by their mom and littermates.

As others have mentioned it is because of Yorkies being susceptible to a collapsed trachea. A collar is fine to hold their tags, but use a harness for walks.

I don't know if your friend plans on breeding again, but if she does, she really needs to get a mentor.

You could also suggest she join YT. There are lots of experienced breeders here.

Wow..one of my dogs has all of the above except #5, and part of #7...I wanted to pick her up one DAY before she turned 12 weeks old (as I took my vacation to coincide with getting her and wanted that first day of vacation with her to get her used to her new home, etc during my time off) and the breeder would not let her go until she was exactly 12 weeks old and a day earlier she wasn't "exactly 12 weeks", which I thought kinda odd but I accommodated the breeder. I think it all depends all so much. I highly doubt it's "how she was raised" as we got another a few months later and that little one is so mellow with none of the above, so I really believe genetics, personality, etc is what decides the above. (Though I support keeping them with their mother until 11/12 weeks.)

Like another poster said, collapsing trachea. A puppy will tend to pull on a leash, a collar puts the pressure on the neck/throat, but a harness distributes it thru the shoulders.

Plus, they are just plain cute!

Glad to hear your breeder has agreed to keep Sadie until she is 12 weeks old.
I know it feels like a long time to wait and you wish you could just have her now but seriously it is better for you and Sadie if she stays with her mother until she is 12 weeks old.
I didnt know how old was best to take a pup home when I got my Poppy, I thought she was 8 weeks when I brought her home then later found out she was only 6 weeks.
She is healthy dont get me wrong but training is hard work, she bites constantly.. and I have to teach her bite inhibition which is a hard task.
If she had stayed with her mother until 12 weeks her mother would have taught her this... seriously it might not sound much but once you experience it then you will see how important it is for her to stay with her mother, for both of you.

I agree you have done yourself a BIG favour by keeping her with the mother untill she is 12weeks old.

:confused: Was just ready to congratulate you and the breeder on waiting till 12 weeks old...but you're waiting 9 more weeks, not 6??

Anyhow, I truly hope you both stick to your word, since I read almost everything I could about Yorkies before getting mine, but somehow missed the 12-week rule. I got Rocco at 8 weeks, and he is a healthy, beautifully behaved 10month old now, but it definitely added work and frustration for me by getting him a bit early. Good luck when you get your new baby, and meanwhile, READ, READ, READ!! :)

Um, I'd double check that calculation. Your profile stats show Sadie's birthday as August 20th. That makes her only 4 weeks and 4 days as of today....

Are you really planning on waiting? I do hope so. I realize that waiting for a puppy is very exciting, but in the long run you really need to do what's best for her.
