I was thinking the same thing about chlorine and/or chemicals. As far as their hair, I guess it would be okay if the didn't stay in forever and you washed it out with a good shampoo and conditioner. I'm sure the stuff in the water plus all the heat and additional hair drying and stuff would dry out their hair just as it does ours, I guess. I was also wondering about their ears getting bothered or infected from too much water, chlorine, or even the salt and sand from the ocean? I don't know, maybe I am overthinking!! |
It's good to hear that some yorkies love to swim. We have a pool but it's yet to be warm enough. So much for sunny cal. I will put him in the pool just to make sure he can swim if he fell in. My Chupa(chihauhua) can swim but hates the pool. Soda(Pitbull) loves it in the summer. Even jumps off the diving board(allthough she's getting a bit old for that now). One day it will warm again. (I hope) :rainbow: |
yes our Yorkie can swim although he doesn't like it much cause he's still a puppy |
Well...i have only one word: CONDITIONER! After Mojo went in the pool i started getting sick, had a fever and was in bed for 3 days with a real bad throat infection...so my lil guy only got a bath 4 days later and his hair was a biig ball of mats, i mean, i cried just in thinking how had it would be to comb thru it...even thought about giving him a puppy cut...thankfully, after a conditioning bath that took 2 hours, the mats were gone, but i learned my lesson:) Also, i know that the beach will damage the hair even more because of the sand...it would be good also to clean and dry the ears daily, just in case!! Ahh, and in the pool my bf uses the power chlorine and also i guess i would be good to wait a few hours or even a day before letting your yorkie go in the pool! |
I think as long as your pup doesnīt stay in the water long and you clean them, it isnīt a big risk for ear infections and if they arenīt enjoying it they will soon get out. I think though i disagree that the beach is more damaging. My pup had a little paddle day b4 yesterday and he got a bit sandy but u just need to give them a good brush. I would be careful with chlorine incase the levels arent right in the pool. Remember a humans PH is different to that of our furry pals, so what chlorine levels may be right for us wonīt be right for them. It could even give them skin conditions. Whereas sea water is cleansing. Love Vikki and Rambo :animal-sm |
Can your yorkie swim? I live across the street from the beach. All my Yorkies have swam. The problem is the sand and the salt water. You have to give them a bath when you get home and the salt water can burn their eyes. If you want to see your yorkie swim just fill up your bathtub and he will start treading water. You can put a rubber toy in the bathtub to coax him. Yes I have done this. It is fun as long as the yorkie is enjoying himself and not panicking. I even had one yorkie that if you said bath he jumped into the bathtub. That is how much he loved water. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Owwwww....i am thinking in getting one of those small pools for kids, one the is just deep enough and long enough for Mojo to swim around:) He had so much fun:):):) |
Chico can swim too. Last month, when hes was only 4 months old we were in the park which has a duck pond. Chico was happily running about after his ball, he stopped to do the toilet and let go of his ball which rolled down the hill towards the pond. Before I could catch him he ran after it and jumped into the pond. He was to far away for me to reach in and pull him out so when he surfaced and didn't seem to be swimming I jumped in after him - knee deep in skanky pond water. Needless to say as soon as I was in the water he started swiming quite happily. I hauled him out and we made our way home. It was February and freezing, but he seemed very pleased with himself. He also had his first bath that day too!! My fiance thinks its hilarious that I jumped in after him as all dogs can swim! But he is only a baby and might have got such a fright that he didn't know what to do. We are planning to take him to Loch Lomand in the summer to swim. How fantastic to be able to take your dog in a pool wiht you, don't think my health club would be too impressed if I turned up with Chico!! |
That's hilarious! Sorry, I couldn't help but laugh! Can just see you in that dang pond! I would have done the same thing, I'm sure. What we don't do for our furbabies! Pat |
