Hi another newbie Hi new here. We're researching our next puppy and have pretty much decided on a yorkie. They're so cute! And should be able to stand up to my lazy but pushy mini doxie (who ain't so mini at 17 lbs.). We'd welcome any advice, I've had dogs my whole life, this is my first time with smaller breeds. They're fun! |
:welcome4: :yorkietal Welcome, Kathy :yorkietal :welcome4: Welcome to YorkieTalk, Kathy. You have come to the right place to learn about Yorkies. I can assure you that most Yorkies would be glad to "take on" your mini doxie. I know that my 4 lb. Emmitt would! |
Hi Bird lady. Welcome aboard and do your research, With a Yorkie, buy your breeder first, and then get the dog. |
Welcome and good luck with finding a little yorkie :) Yorkies are the best ;) |
Welcome and good luck in your search. I'm glad to see you doing some research. |

Welcome and it's great that you are doing research! There are good and bad breeders out there, so it's important to know what to look for. I would suggest checking ytca.org for reputable breeders in your area. There are "stickies" at the top of this forum where info has been compiled to help you to know what to look for and what to stay away from: Yorkies For Sale or Wanted - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community You may receive "PMs" from breeders on YT, please research them as you would any breeder that you find. Best of luck! |
Welcome to YT. Yorkies are the best. Good luck on your search. |
Welcome to YT! You've certainly come to the right place to start researching these little ones! What information exactly were you looking for? I would suggest you start by researching the breed--the standard, so you can better evaluate if potential pups are well bred. Also, the health issues that are notorious with breeds--which tests breeders should have done on pups and what to look for. Also, research some of the red flags commonly associated with shady Yorkie breeders so that you know what to avoid: * breeding mutliple breeds and/or mixed breeds * questionable registration * dogs that stray from the standard for the breed * breeders that don't have s/n agreements and who have bad or no sales agreements * people claiming their dogs are "teacups" or "micros" or "tinies" * having multiple litters in short amounts of time * breeding extemely small famales (under 5 lbs) Good luck with your search and research. :) |
Good luck and do your research! Don't get over excited and just buy the first one you see. You really need to buy your breeder first. Don't think that the dog with the small price tag is the one for you, at least until you've done your research on that dog and that dog's breeder. The small price tag pups generally come with a big vet bill later... |
Well I've got a friend of a friend, who the first friend is good friends with ... :) They have 3 yorkies. Not fixed, so guess what happened? They're not breeders, just pet lovers, they did get their doggos from legit breeders. There's a girl at 5.5 lbs, the boys are 3 and 4 lbs apiece. This is the first litter, they're thinking about letting her have another before they get one or more neutered. What do you all think of that situation? "Illegitimate" puppies? :) They did say they're going to contact the breeders about possible papers, AKC or another organization, maybe. The dogs weren't "champion" potential but do (by the friend's assertion) have pedigrees that include a name or two, good specimens but "pet level" for the show set. |

If the parents weren't screened before the mated, you could end up with a puppy with some serious medical issues. Some lines have genetic diseases and some have genetic malfunctions - LP, Liver Shunts, Open Fontenels... If the puppy has a low price ticket up front there's a pretty good chance that the puppy will have a large vet ticket later on. I would seriously think about this puppy before taking it on. But, good luck in whatever you choose. |
