Hi another newbie Hi new here. We're researching our next puppy and have pretty much decided on a yorkie. They're so cute! And should be able to stand up to my lazy but pushy mini doxie (who ain't so mini at 17 lbs.). We'd welcome any advice, I've had dogs my whole life, this is my first time with smaller breeds. They're fun! |
:welcome4: :yorkietal Welcome, Kathy :yorkietal :welcome4: Welcome to YorkieTalk, Kathy. You have come to the right place to learn about Yorkies. I can assure you that most Yorkies would be glad to "take on" your mini doxie. I know that my 4 lb. Emmitt would! |
Hi Bird lady. Welcome aboard and do your research, With a Yorkie, buy your breeder first, and then get the dog. |
Welcome and good luck with finding a little yorkie :) Yorkies are the best ;) |
Welcome and good luck in your search. I'm glad to see you doing some research. |

Welcome and it's great that you are doing research! There are good and bad breeders out there, so it's important to know what to look for. I would suggest checking ytca.org for reputable breeders in your area. There are "stickies" at the top of this forum where info has been compiled to help you to know what to look for and what to stay away from: Yorkies For Sale or Wanted - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community You may receive "PMs" from breeders on YT, please research them as you would any breeder that you find. Best of luck! |
Welcome to YT. Yorkies are the best. Good luck on your search. |
Welcome to YT! You've certainly come to the right place to start researching these little ones! What information exactly were you looking for? I would suggest you start by researching the breed--the standard, so you can better evaluate if potential pups are well bred. Also, the health issues that are notorious with breeds--which tests breeders should have done on pups and what to look for. Also, research some of the red flags commonly associated with shady Yorkie breeders so that you know what to avoid: * breeding mutliple breeds and/or mixed breeds * questionable registration * dogs that stray from the standard for the breed * breeders that don't have s/n agreements and who have bad or no sales agreements * people claiming their dogs are "teacups" or "micros" or "tinies" * having multiple litters in short amounts of time * breeding extemely small famales (under 5 lbs) Good luck with your search and research. :) |
Good luck and do your research! Don't get over excited and just buy the first one you see. You really need to buy your breeder first. Don't think that the dog with the small price tag is the one for you, at least until you've done your research on that dog and that dog's breeder. The small price tag pups generally come with a big vet bill later... |
Well I've got a friend of a friend, who the first friend is good friends with ... :) They have 3 yorkies. Not fixed, so guess what happened? They're not breeders, just pet lovers, they did get their doggos from legit breeders. There's a girl at 5.5 lbs, the boys are 3 and 4 lbs apiece. This is the first litter, they're thinking about letting her have another before they get one or more neutered. What do you all think of that situation? "Illegitimate" puppies? :) They did say they're going to contact the breeders about possible papers, AKC or another organization, maybe. The dogs weren't "champion" potential but do (by the friend's assertion) have pedigrees that include a name or two, good specimens but "pet level" for the show set. |

If the parents weren't screened before the mated, you could end up with a puppy with some serious medical issues. Some lines have genetic diseases and some have genetic malfunctions - LP, Liver Shunts, Open Fontenels... If the puppy has a low price ticket up front there's a pretty good chance that the puppy will have a large vet ticket later on. I would seriously think about this puppy before taking it on. But, good luck in whatever you choose. |
Hi, fellow noob! I found my Yorkie's breeder by checking the ACK and YTCA websites for lists of breeders, then searching for comments about the listed breeders here. Folks on this forum know so much about caring for Yorkies -- I recommend you read as much as your brain can take, especially in the health and emergency categories -- to get an idea of the pros and cons of this little dog and make sure you're prepared to care for it properly (not to mention handle the expenses). As adorable as these dogs are, this breed is not for everyone. I learned a lot about how to find a responsible breeder, and think that my home will be an excellent fit for the puppy I chose, thanks to information on this forum. And I have also gotten a lot of laughs and a few tears in this group already. |

Personally, I do not want to knowingly buy from irresponsible pet owners that do not know anything about breeding and are going to continue to be irresponsible and breed again. They are breeders, they are "back yard breeders" and I wouldn't want to get a pet that way. I seriously doubt they did any testing, evaluating since they don't even know what papers if any they even have. If they actually got their dogs from legit breeders, they would know about papers. You could be in heartache down the road in vet care, etc... |

Welcome To YT Patches & Winnie |
Wow. OK. I have to say, some of this sounds a bit harsh. These guys were looking for pets, and went about getting pups from "real" breeders (read: show dog breeders with all the red tape and ribbons to go with it) and they DO know something about breeding. They're not stupid. Their 3 pets have AKC registration and they've done all those tests - liver, blood, hypo- and hyperglycemia when they were little (I'm not TOTALLY up on the tests that should be performed and when but these people certainly are). I'm not talking about careless owners who don't love their pets. These guys have their own ROOM in the house, are immaculately groomed and one is being courted by a local high brow breeder (again, read: show dogs) to stud one of his girls. What they're interested in is continuing the bloodline with the one boy - his sire's passed and there weren't too many boys from that sire. I mean, seriously, if you let your dog have puppies without a live-in vet and several consultations with AKC representatives, is it a crime? |
Did you or did you not ask "what we thought?" Did you or did you know really want to know honest opinions? You did not present the situation as if they had the first clue as to what they were doing. You presented it as if they had pets (an oops litter) and weeee, this is fun, lets do it again. So why would you expect a different response? Your stories of these people makes no sense. First you state it was an accident, that the dogs are pet quality, that they don't even know what they can do about registering them. Now you paint a different picture--that they are experienced breeders with impeccable bloodlines and are working with show breeders. If they did all the pre-breeding test, then they must have been planning on breeding....so how is this an "oops?" They are either pet lovers, or breeders. Interested in continuing a blood line, or going to get the dogs fixed after one more litter. So which one is it? Can't be both. |

Oh dear god. They have PETS. Were they planning on breeding? Maybe. Maybe not. Choice got away from them when the dogs did their own thing. They may or may not breed their little boy with that show girl yorkie. BTW I did mention that these were dogs from "breeders." Apparently the definition of that word escapes me. This is precisely the thing I avoid. If you're not planning on obtaining a doctorate in that specific breed's anatomy and genealogy you're a horrible person and perpetrating medical disasters on the animal in question. This is not the forum for me. |

Forums in general are a tricky thing. You ask a question and for opinions, and people generally answer. Some people can handle it, some can't. Did you at least notice that before you became offended, people were jumping on left and right welcoming you and trying to help you out.... |
I don't see what went wrong here. No one was rude or in her face, we were just answering her questions and giving our opinions. It's what she asked for, isn't it? |
