How cold do yorkies get? Winter is coming!!! Lexi will have her first real winter coming up in a couple of months. Do yorkies get really cold outside like we do??? Or do they have different body temperatures that allow them to be fine. I know some of us here love dressing them up especially in the colder seasons, but do they really need to be all dressed up for winter?? If she'll be fine without clothes i'll do without, but i'm just curious to know if I should get winterclothes or just leave her be. She's about 10 months weighing at 7lbs now. Can't wait to hear the responses! |
Hammer is 12 lbs and he shivers. This is our first real winter together (I got him in February) so Im gonna keep his hair a bit longer.. and possibly buy him some doggie furry boots! |
It's different for different pups...You'll just have to wait and see...My little girl, Apple, has fine hair, and my little boy, has thicker, courser hair...And yet, Apple doesn't seem bothered by the cold weather, and Buzz shivers, if it's under 60 degrees...lI always wondered what makes the difference about this? Maybe someone will have some information about this... |

I always put a coat in my three in the winter. When it is really cold I will also used boots to protect their feet as well. I see you live in Canada and it gets coooool! Shop early and shop lots :D |
When I adopted Ally last year, I said I wouldn't dress her up. My neighbors told me that I would and laughed at me. Well, I'm in Florida and it doesn't get super cold like where some of you live. One day we had a little (real little because I was wearing a sleeveless shirt) cool breeze. Ally started to shiver...and I knew she would need lots of sweaters because I was not cold. We adopted Tia this past Easter, so I can't wait to see how she reacts. |
During the winter my girl gets chilled inside-even with clothing. If anyone has a laptop out, she'll sneak and try to lay on it. All year round she has to sleep under the covers. My boy doesnt get chilled the way she does. |
Seems to bother Maxine only when it is well under freezing. She always wears a coat, When it is below 0, we make sure to really watch her as a few times she did not want to move...so we picked her up fast. When she was younger, never a problem. |
I am in trouble with Piper....she has been shivering here and its been in the 60s. I just hope that she doesn't think it is too cold and it regresses her potty training. |
The cold bothers Natalie even in the house. If it gets under 70 she starts to shiver and her hair is getting long. I have to wrap her in her blanket to get her warm. I will definitely have to get winter clothes for her. Charlie it does not bother at all although I do put his bomber jacket on him in the winter to go outside. |
My two are ok in the house but when they are out in the winter I put coats on them. I figure if I'm cold, they're cold. They just put up with me. |
Very interesting post. my Yorkie will be going through his first winter and I ordered a load of sweaters and jackets for the winter. I also have jackets and sweaters for my shorkie. I'm thinking about boots for the snowy days but I don't know how to size footwear. |
Although I don't live in a very cold climate it does go down to the 50's here in the winter. Cooper sometimes wears a sweater in the house, but always goes outside with a jacket on. Quote:

Fynnlie's been shivering here and it's only been down into the 50's and the wind has been blowing! It gets down into the single digits here in the winter and sometimes into the negatives! Fynn already has one coat and I'm ordering more! Annnnnd! I've got my eye on some boots for him, Karen! I want those blue ones! |
Teegy shivers when it's cold, so I went to Neopaws looking for boots and a coat. They told me the coat would be too warm and their sweaters would be plenty. She recommended Pawz for him because his feet were so wee. I know some folks mentioned that Paws got caught in the dogs hair, I put a sprinkle of baby powder in the shoe and it's good to go. He has a little fleece lined rain coat also, but he loooooooooooooooooves the snow. |
