I am trying to cross train the puppies so on a real cold day they will use the WeeWee pad. I am kind of worried about the yorkie going outside on a real cold day, I've been told that because they do not have an udercoat of fur they get cold easily. They have real heavy coats, so I hope they will be able to walk in them. |
I think it all depends on the dog, really. I've seen some tiny little dogs that do fine with no coat, etc, and others who don't. Jackson is 15lbs and cold doesn't generally bother him but when it gets under, like, 25 degrees, I put a coat on him. The only time I've seen him shiver is when he is out in the snow for long periods of time or when we first get into a cold car (since he's not moving around and stuff, I think he gets really cold). So he does wear a jacket in the winter a lot! |
Mia hates the cold! When it gets below 70. But she seems to get chilly quickly. I am looking at boots for her, the sweater does seem to help. Last winter when she joined our family she was a potty pad girl strictly. SO I imagine we will be using them pretty regular this year if it is anything like the last. She warms up pretty quickly to, but we keep the temps warm and steady, just for her. Mary & Mia |
It will be the first winter for Merlin as well. We already got some coats and boots and sweaters and tried them on so he gets used to wearing them. I guess the boots will take longer to get accustomed to, he walks real funny with them. Our house is quite cool so we have him wearing shirts now if it gets too chilly. I am happy that he does his business outside, so when it's freezing outside he just has to poop and pee a bit more quickly and I'll wrap him up in a blanket I put in the dryer so it's all snuggly. And I'll keep his hair a bit longer as well, no brushcut for the next 6 months. |

When Sprocket first came to live at our house he caught cold from just being outside in our 60-70 degree normal weather! Of course we are in very southern california and it's coldest is MAYBE 50ish, at least for us being outside walking, I'm a woos too, BUT, because of my first experience with the "cold", it was 20-30 degrees colder than he was used too, I am NOT doing the vet thing with a cold and etc again. VET told me QUOTE " If you wear a sweater or a jacket HE wears one too", and I've lived by that since, of course we're only just now going into our second winter season, but still our winter is rainy and windy. The vet bill one time aside from the misery of my baby was enough to get little shirts or a rain jacket. Sprocket doesn't like to wear them, but he doesn't like to be cold. Right now I got some of the little shirts from the $1 bin at Target and they are perfect. :animal-pa |

These are very popular for the reasons stated above- Black Cozy Fleece Dog Coat |
Teegy doesn't seem to mind being out in the cold, I wonder if you're going to take ten steps back on toilet training if you start allowing them to pee inside again |
They can get pretty cold they have hair instead of fur so if your cold they are cold |
Last year Ziva didn't want to step on our cold tile floors and hopped from throw rug to dog bed. This year I am already letting her coat grow(very fine, thin)and she wears a t shirt once december comes.I am making some extra fleece dog beds to put in each room. When our a/c gets too cold she begs to go outside and stands in the sun! |

Zhoie gets really cold, but she loves the snow too. She has coats, raincoats, and the girl loves her t-shirts. I swear with the a/c on she likes wearing a t-shirt inside all summer. She likes be toasty. She has only had one sweater and I found it caused bad coat breakage on her, so we go with fleece or t-shirt materials. She doesn't like hoodies at all, so if I buy a hoodie, I always take the hoods off. I've been debating on getting boots from all boots, but my friend loaned me a small pair and I have been putting her in them everyday and she simply will not move.......at all....errrr. Looks as if she maybe a barefoot baby again this winter. I'm going to keep trying though. It's so much fun to watch them in the very first snow of the season...got my camera all ready and waiting! |
