Harness or Collar Hi all, I have been looking for the best forum about yorkies, and I found it here!! So, I was wondering if you can give me some advice. I have been trying to have my puppy get used to walking on a harness. We have a collar as well, but, which one is more suitable/convenient? And how can I get him to start walking? We've tried everything from treats, toys, etc. We have been training him at home....any suggestions?? Thank u!! :) |
Welcome to YT! Without doubt, ONLY a harness should be used to walk your yorkie. Their tracheas are very delicate and could suffer injury from a collar. Puppies take some time to learn being walked, so be patient, he'll get it. Just be sure you keep him close by your side without too much slack on the leash and tell him "good boy" when he walks steady and close by. By the way, how old is he? Any pics? |
Yorkies have trachea problems so for walking a harness would be better 100 percent. When Keoki was a baby we used this Dog Harness, Dog Training Supplies | Sense-ible and Sense-ation Dog Harness it REALLY helped to teach him how to walk on a leash and I swear by it. I had a trainer come over and help me and she recommended this- he wore it until he was a year old and now he wears a regular harness. |
I would absolutely use a harness:) Two that I have found are very helpful are the Puppia ones and the EZ Walk Harness (best for those pullers!). Good luck with your new puppy and you definately came to the right place. I've learned so much here! |
Thanks!! :) He is so tiny! He is about 2lbs he is 3 months old..I will upload pix soon! I'm still familiarizing with the forum and how to post, etc :) Thanks for your suggestion. I will definitely look into getting him a better harness! |
Thanks! Yes, I've heard about their trachea issues and how delicate it is. But, can I still use a collar for having his ID tag etc on it? |

Always have a colar on your puppy with an ID Tag on it. Harness is more comfortable for her, but have in mind that she will pull you more because she doesn't feel any resistance. It's more difficult to learn how to control her with a harness. Especially if you wan't to train her. But you will get a hang of it after a wile. I also have a problem with harness because I keep both my Yorkies with long hair and after our walk they have many small mats wherever the harness touches them. So always comb them after their walk. Also, I keep his collar on 24/7. It has his id on it with my phone number and a little bell. I learned my lesson and always keep it on. He once walked out of our condo to take himself for a walk and he had no id on him at all! Never ever again will he be sitting in our home without his collar on. I now have the breakaway cat collar kind. In the odd event that he gets himself stuck on something, the collar will just fall off instead of putting any pressure on his little trachea. |

Please, always use only the harness whenever you walk your puppy. I have been walking our Ally since she was 12 weeks old and using a harness. She is now 2 years old and we walk every day. Just take your time and let your Yorkie "sniff" all she wants to. No hurry. You both have plenty of time, enjoy yous walks and smell the roses. Life goes by too fast anyway. |
Harness for YT only. They are so fragile and they love to pull and put resistance on the collars. I really like the Puppia brand soft harness. PuppiaUs.Com !!! has some great soft harnesses. |
I tried different harnesses with Buster. I first tried the soft mesh vest type but he did not like putting his head in and out of the hole. Next I tried ones with metal slides on them to adjust the size but they seemed stiff and chafed him. I finally found a company called I see spot. They had really cute X shaped harnesses with velcro closures. They are reversible as well so two looks for one. For Buster one side is black and silver flames and ther other is a shiny silver that I use a night. |

That scared me so much that I'll never EVER let him go around the house without his collar on. What if, now that we're living at home with my parents, one of the people at home leave the door wide open and Kaji walks out looking for me while I'm at work? I know my mom is careless and doesn't follow my rules for keeping Kaji safe. I just fear it'll happen again. :( |
