That being said, there is a downside. The standard for a Yorkie calls for a longer muzzle than that of a baby doll faced Yorkie. Too short, and you have a bracheocephalic dog (think of a smushed in face like a boxer or pekingese). The shorter the muzzle, the more difficult it is for a dog to breathe. They won't be as heat tolerant or be able to exercise as much, so if you are looking for a dog that can be more active or do things like agility, go with a muzzle that meets the standard.
Also, anyone the advertises things like "baby doll face," "cobby body," "apple head" ... those are all things outside the standard so they are purposefully producing dogs that are incorrect, and then trying to pass off those traits as something desirable and worth more money, when that simply isn't true. Then there are those that advertise "teacups," and try to get a lot more money for extra small dogs, when in reality they are more fragile and need special consideration. It's all about money and marketing, not about what should be done for correct breeding.
No Yorkie meets the standard perfectly, not even from the most careful, reputable breeder. Yorkie pups all have their faults, but the difference is between the breeder whose goal is perfection and the breeder that is trying to breed incorrect structure, head shape, etc. all in the name of jacking up prices. Run from those people!
A reputable breeder would look at an extreme baby doll face with an apple head and a cobby body and place it in a pet home at a pet price. A disreputable breeder will brag about those traits and try to use them to set a higher price. |
