& yea I understand when u want to find a local home for your puppies. Because I want to find a close by breeder that I can build a relationship with & keep in contact with. People were telling me about breeders like 5 hours away....that's not what I'm looking for. I want to be able to bring him by to see his parents, & send updated photos & stories & All that good stuff! When I'm in NYC I live on the upper eastside in manhattan & when I'm in Jersey I'm in New Brunswick. ( I go back & forth to my mom & dads house. & trust me if I get my yorkie he's coming with me everywhere.) |

i know but that's what all those silly college people say. then again i majored in recreation and she's majoring in BIO and then Veterinary science! that has to be a lot more studing than i did in college lol :D i think she should get a dog for sure, just not sure if a new puppy is right over a young dog. |

I'm pre-vet also. :) It is just fine to have a Yorkie, but not all college students can handle it. But a pre-vet really should be able to figure out a way for the most part. That said, I can understand a breeder not wanting to sell you one (and I'd be tempted to go to a BYB, honestly :( ). I don't have to do everything myself, so it is possible for me to have a doggie. Before getting one though, consider: Who pays the dog bills, esp. what you move out and make no money (vet school)? Will you be able to afford to live off campus in vet school? You live with your mom and you said you aren't happy with her over at least one issue. You are a pre-vet and undoubtedly have opinions about how this dog's vet care should go. Does your mom agree? Because if not, it will be a source of tension... You only have school now, but will have to volunteer and/or shadow and/or work and/or research and/or TA and/or do your extracurriculars, etc. How many hours a week will you be gone then? In vet school, there won't be time to go hang out at night and such. You'll have to go home to the dog most of the time. It is not a bad idea. It has the potential to be very difficult. ETA: No way do I study three hours for every class hour either. I love my life too much for that. :) |
Its such a shame that you cant get a breeder to take you seriously. I can understand why altho i dont agree with it. I guess anything can happen to any one of us owning our yorkies. Moving house, losing our job, spliting with hubby and not being able to afford our yorkies etc. Anyone of these things can happen to anyone so its a little unfiar to say you MIGHT move somewhere that allows no pets because i have a yorkie and would not move into somewhere where no pets are allowed?! To think that school and collaege work may leave you little time with the yorkie, most of us have full time jobs while looking after our little yorkies. I am sure you have thought about the financial side of owning a yorkie and if you think you can afford it and can give your little one enough time then i dont really see a problem with you having a yorkie. As long as you know this dog will come first before most things for the next 12-15years. I am a young girl who is a proud yorkie owner. I have a full time job and i would HATE for someone to tell me i couldnt own a yorkie because i am young and work full time. I think its important for a breeder to ask these questions and just not rule people out because they are young and in college. Good breeders will ask ALOT of questions and make sure you can afford it and maybe even have a chat to your parents etc and way up the pros and cons. Its looks to me like you will be a lovely mummy to a yorkie. Just make sure you can afford this little one for the rest of its life, take out pet insurance etc. Good luck xxxx |
Hey I was in a similar situation, but judging for other stories, I think I got completely lucky with my little one. I'm 20, going to a 4-year university 7 hours away from home. I live in an apartment with my boyfriend and 2 other roomies that are never home. When I brought home Biggie, he only cried for 2 nights, and after that he's been sleeping through the night and gets up when I get up. His potty training took no time at all.. maybe 3 weeks and he's been good since on a pee pad. Now he wants to go OUTSIDE to pee..I've never even taught him that! He's great. He did have a hypoglycemic seizure, which scared the s**t out of me..but I was prepared to keep him on medication for the rest of his life if need be..I am extremely fortunate to say that money has never been an issue for my family, so I never thought twice about how expensive it is to have a yorkie...but I can tell you that vet visits are about $60 just to see the vet, and then you have to pay for anything on top of the 60 bucks. Then in California, you need to register your dog every year..and if he's not neutered it's like 100$! SO you have you get him neutered and that'll be another $160 unless you're lucky enough to find a REPUTABLE spay and neuter clinic. Then their shots are over 100$ total, unless you go to a clinic. However, I would never take Biggie to someplace that's cheap, but run by people who aren't even vets. His toys are ripped apart pretty quickly, so I'm always buying him toys, and those aren't really cheap either. He eats like a cat, so buying him food doesn't happen too often. He does need to get groomed pretty frequently, I have a really good groomer that loves Biggie, and it's $30 each visit with a teeth brushing, and anal gland expression, nails cut, all that good stuff. Biggie gets this almost monthly. These costs can really add up if you're on a budget. Being pre-med, I study nearly all day and all night. I'm an over-time student (20 units!!) with class EVERYDAY, sometimes up to 6 hours a day (not a consecutive 6 hours). The downside to having Biggie with me is that I can't bear to leave him in my apt all alone all day while I'm at the library studying, so I usually have to come home and be with him and study at home, which can be distracting at times. Since I don't commute to school, I can go to school and come back home within 10 minutes (waiting for the bus), which means Biggie is never alone for really more than 3 hours. During that time, my roomies have told me that he doesn't even make a peep. I'm home with him a lot, and I also take him to the doggie park everyday for at least 2 hours. I always put Biggie first. I will not give up Biggie's play time for my fun time, and I've said "no" to going to out plenty of times because I felt like Biggie needed some fun too. I can still go to parties though because Biggie usually hits the sack at around 11pm and I'm usually back by 2am (: I'm going to med school in a couple of years and I never thought of leaving Biggie behind. I'm always home since I'm always studying my nuts off. I'm even doing research right now and working on publishing a paper on melanoma and bone density, and he's still the happiest, friendliest, cutest (LOL) yorkie at the dog park. He's so spoiled, but he's a happy boy (: SO ULTIMATELY, I think you should get a dog if you really think that you can put enough time into his/her life. I have a busy schedule, but Biggie fits right in because I make sacrifices for him, AND because I was lucky to get an "easy" pup. From reading a lot of other stories, yorkies are usually very stubborn to train. Not so with my little one, so that plays a huge factor to how easy it is to have him with me. Some people who aren't even busy with school/work don't even have enough time to potty train their dogs. Why get a dog if you can't even be there to watch him grow/learn? If you don't even have enough time to potty train your doggy, don't bother getting one. Good luck! |

No not at all my mom doesn't really have a problem with yorkies (pitbulls yea...but not yorkies.) The issue with my mom is that she has this theory that all that dogs do is poop. Lol. But I'm trying to get her out of thinking like that. Yea.....dogs poop....but so does everyother living thing. Lol. But she's starting to open up more....thanks to one of her co workers/ close friend that recently became really ill & she owns a lil yorkie & she always tells my mom about the funny lil things they do & how they keep her going. But I've thought about all those possibilities & I feel like I can make them work out. |
PS When I said I go to parties, I go, but I don't drink. It tastes disgusting and I hate looking at myself in the mirror and seeing a sloppy mess of a person looking back..so no worries my little yorkie is not around a crazy sloppy drunken mess of a woman. lol and while IDK about 15 hrs of studying...my bf and I have gotten at least 10 hours per day (usually for like 3 or 4 days) studying for midterms and finals (biochemistry and organic chemistry at the same time DDDD: ). So make sure you take all that studying into account because I hear vet school is harder to get into than MD school, I guess because there are so few vet schools in the US. |

@ furbutt....thank you! :) @ samanthakim yea I also feel like a yorkie will fit in w/ my life. & I have no problems making sacrifices for my yorkie. Me & my mom was talking one day...& she mentioned how every summer I go away on vacation....most times to the Caribbean to spend time with my family over there. & she asked what am I goin to do with my dog?....I immediately told her I'm bringing it with me. She made this crazy face & said my uncle & aunt probably wouldn't want a dog in their house......so I told her that I wouldn't go. That she would have to go to the caribbean without me & I honestly mean that! People would tell me I'm crazy to give up a caribbean vacation for a dog. But I don't see it that way....when you have a baby....do you just leave the baby while you go away & have a blast!?....NO!!! I want the yorkie so its my responsibility even if it means turnin down an opportunity to go to the beach & soak in the sun! Lol. (Plus I been there so many times & I know I'm not missing out on much) ;) |
