"Designer Dogs" - curious After reading the title to another thread about a Maltese/Yorkie mix I got to thinking :confused: which for me can be a very dangerous thing :D. I am asking this question because I know that if I breed a male donkey with a female horse I get a Mule which has more of the donkey qualities -- longer ears, shorter tail, and is a sturdy animal. If I breed a male horse with a female donkey I get a hinney which is more horselike - shorter ears, longer tail, and much more fragile - especially as a baby. Both donkeys and hinneys are sterile as I am sure that you already know. So with that introduction the question I ask is: Is there any spcific differences that can be expected if sire is a Yorkie and the dam is a Maltese VS the sire being a Maltese and the dam a Yorkie? I do want to add that I am not in favor of the new "designer breed" fad. What I see is a multitude of new mixed breeds for sale at huge prices when there are a multitude of mixed breeds losing their lives for lack of homes. |

That's a great question. I haven't really ever thought about it before. I thought, that if you breed a horse to a donkey, the kid is always a mule. There's how much I knew... Ha. |
I never heard of a Hinney..I learn something new everyday! :p Great question though..I'm another who is against the "Designer Dog " fad. |
You learn something everyday. I never heard of a hinney - LOL! And never knew they were sterile. I love this site. I love yorkies. And with that said, unfortunately we live in a society of fads and trends. And of course, when you hear "designer" well....... I'll stick with my yorkies. I also want to take the time and say "Thank You" for all the great knowledge I have obtained through everyone's comments. |
i cant say anything about a Yorkie/Maltese cross but i read some wear that when you mix dogs they normally take after there father.i don't know how true it is but your horse/donkey seems to fit. however in nature you have crosses like the lion/tiger (ligers and tigons) which are a pretty even mix of mother and father and just to add my two cents i have a "designer dog" a chiweenie (chihuahua/dachshund) i call her Chi-Chi if someone asks what breed she is i tell them some kind of mutt because as much as i love her that's what she is, some kind of mutt |
My friend's daughter just got a puppy from the shelter - it is a chihuahua/German Shepherd mix. I sure hope the chihuahua was the father. I can imagine that breeding. You know, most of our Yorkies are pure bred Yorkies, however they didn't start out that way, I think there were three different breeds involved in the beginnings of the Yorkshire Terrier. Who is to say, that years from now "designer breeds" like the Morkie won't be a recognized breed of its own??? |
While I dont think its right to jack up the price for "mutts" being a mutt myself I think its awesome that being a mutt is now in style! :p so personally I think its the Poor Breeders that people should be against not the fad... after all if we look back into the yorkies heritage we would find that in the beginning they were Designer Mutts too... Just Saying. |

Interesting question! My guess is that there is no difference, because they are the same species. There are mixes further up the canine chain - say, dog/fox, or coyote/fox - and I believe there you always get the same animal, regardless of parentage. Sometimes different terms are used on those types of mixes depending on which animal was the mother, but they are still the same type of animal. |

UMMM, good question. My daughter's dog, Daisy is a yorkie/jack russell mix...Father was the yorkie. Daisy looks and acts more like a yorkie...IMO. |
I understand some of the designer breeding. People with allergies want some other choices so they breed a poodle to another breed. However a Yorkie is such a unique a beautiful dog that in my opinion the only mix you should make should be to maybe a Silkie. Just my 2 cents worth. |

Because they use the sex from each species that does NOT control growth, the darn animals grow to be HUGE. (Oy vey...too much Animal Planet!) |

They are also breeding the zorse. zebra x horse. I dont know if they are sterile but to me they look like a small horse with zebra stripes on the rump and conformationally look more like the zebra. I only saw one picture of it so I dont know if they all look that way. |

well, I have to say that it is too bad that mixed breed dogs don't follow the horse/donkey theory and were born sterile. It would sure curtail the epidemic of mixes in our shelters and puppy mill of "designer dogs" if they could not reproduce.. Not saying it to be mean as I also have 2 mixes of my own (not MY breeding) Just saying that the OPs post made me think (and that in itself can be dangerous...lol) |
