Advice needed; Khloe is going to the beach. (: This Saturday, my fiance' and I are going to Hatteras for vacation. We will be gone all week, and I couldn't stand to think about leaving Khloe. My concern is that I want her to stay comfortable and enjoy herself. The heat will be an issue. I plan on keeping cold water available for her to drink on the beach, and spraying her down with a spray bottle of water to stay cool. We can also drive on the beach, so I was going to put her a towel down under our vehicle for shade(after it has been parked for awhile). She's 4 months, so how often should I take her back to the house to cool off, get out of the sun, and rest? She's not used to being in the sun except to go use the potty, so if anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it! I don't want her sick from the sun or miserable. Thank you! |
Make sure you have umbrella while on the beach. I took Brandi to the beach as long as she was under umbrella for shade she was fine. She actually feel asleep. I had plenty of water and some treats for her. Brandi didn't like the water though. She was not having it so what i would do is take her down to the shore line and just get her little paws wet. But for the most, she enjoyed it and she did what she does best....lounged around all day :p. |
You may want to invest an a cooling blanket, cooling vest or cooling collar |

Walmart carries a collapsible nylon crate. I think it was only $10-15. It's great to use on beach when they need the shade & comfortable cool place to chill. We've had ours a while now, so hope they still carry them. Also great to clean up after the sand. Have FUN Khloe!!:aimeeyork:sun: |
Whenever I take my little one out on a very hot day. I take along a few frozen cool packs wrapped in a face cloth. The same cool packs that you would use to keep food or drink cool. He loves to lay on them |

By the time they drank out of the smaller bowl, it was filled with sand from their facial hair. lol Poor Hot Rod ate more sand than food. She has a little life jacket that we have used at the pool. I'm scared to let her in the water above her paws with the rip tide and the risk of an ear infection, but it may come in handy at the pool. I'm a little weary of the pool chemicals also. I guess I'm thinking too much into everything; I do my kids the same way, bless their little hearts. Thanks for reminding me what to pack, everyone. (: An umbrella (or we'll rent one), her life jacket, some ice packs for her to lay on, a large water bowl, and if I'm missing anything besides a towel, please add. And I'm going to Wal-Mart to look for that pen; hopefully they'll have it. And I'm looking for a place to pick up the cooler collar too. Maybe a visit to PetSmart after dinner. . |

Here are a few things I do to keep harley cool (when I drive home it's 3 hours in an unairconditioned car)... If you can't find a cooling blanket, you could always wrap an icepack in a towel and put it under her bed in her crate... assuming you're bringing the crate. Another thing I did was put a jacket over the top of his crate, with the white interior facing up, and the dark side on the inside, That way it deflects the sun, and they have shade. Dipping paws in the water, and bringing either icecubes, or frozen chicken broth cube etc as treats helps as well. a squirt bottle is good too. Those are all the things to keep Harley cool. I've taken Vinnie to the beach many times. The biggest thing is to provide plenty of shade and take frequent dips into the water. Keep cool (not ice cold, but cool) water constantly available. Also, sunscreen at the beach is very important. Yorkies have thin hair and light skin, so sunburn can and does happen. I actually use human sunscreen on Vinnie and while he doesn't like it, he won't really try and lick it off (I think they make doggy sunscreen though). When I take Vinnie in the water at the beach, I obviously don't go in very far. He is wearing a harness and the leash is always attached (with me at the other end). I realize this would not do much good in a strong current, so we stick right around to where the water is just past my ankles. So long as he's wet, though, he stays nice a cool without any issues. |
Thanks! We are bringing her crate for her to sleep in, but I like your idea as well. And frozen chicken broth as treats (: Tell me about this. Do I just put chicken broth in an ice cube tray, and it will break out freely like an ice cube? And hopefully I can find some sunscreen for dogs at PetSmart? That\'s a good idea also. |
We set up a canopy at the beach for the shade. Mostly they like to dig a nice hole under it to cool off. Be careful she doesn\'t drink the ocean water...it will make her sick. Have funny....and expect it to take awhile to get all the sand out of her hair! :eek: lol |
