i agree, car safety is important. i drive down to my mothers house (a two hour drive) about 8 times a year i use to lock the dogs in there crates because i did not want something to happen but Gatsby would get sick every time.
my 16 year old sister was sick of having to clean the crate so she got a old milk crate from school and fit it with pads on the floor and all four sides secured a leash like strip to attach to his harness and we tried it around town first and he did excellent then when we made the two hour trip it was wonderful he did not cry or get sick and it cost us like nothing.

I also agree your little dog should be in his car seat, buckled in! Our Sprocket was allowed to "roam" before he came to us, I'm just not capable of the concentration it takes to do dog and traffic. It's not safe. But I sure didn't pay that much for our car seat I bought ours at PetSmart for I think $39. It hangs off the back of the car seat and is attached with straps, he is attached to the car seat with a clip to his harness. The seat sits up high so Sprocket can see out the window at the cars and people going buy. Now Sprocket is 10lbs and he can lay down in the seat and nap if he choses to, though he very rarely does, too busy watching the cars and people outside and I take him everywhere. The seat gets a good workout. Sturdy :animal-pa

I was looking at one online like I think you are describing. It looks like the straps go around the seat. So, does that mean it has to be in the front seat? I mean, I could just see me making my husband sit in the back while Stormy sat in the front, but I don't think he'd quite go for that.

Thanks so much for the helpful info. bookmarked this site! I really do need something for Piper when I do bring her on car rides, I'd rather leave her at home for safety reasons.
Also great idea Misslissa had also.

I was looking at this car seat too. Does anyone have one like this? This kind of looks like a cheaper version of the one you posted Nico. I want to get one that can easily be moved from front to back seat without a lot of hassle.

The one you found is very nice. I just feel that the material inside will make him really hot. I mean even when it is freezing outside you have the heat on in your car. The one we have is microfiber which is great year round. Also, if he had an accident or threw up microfiber is easy to clean. That's why we have a microfiber couch. I'm not sure if you'd be able to clean the one you found. Again---I'm not an expert and truthfully I don't know enough about the one you found but I'm just giving my opinion. I just want to add that we never put his car seat in the front seat because why risk the airbag going off ya know. If it's where we would put our newborns then that's where he goes. I know a lot of people who put them in the front seat and if it works for them that's great. I just personally don't do it.

I think I may have the perfect one for you! If your little guy is going to grow to be only four pounds then this is the smaller and less expensive version of the one I have. Animals Matter® Companion Car Seat™, Dog Car Seat
I hope I'm not being pushy but I just think it looks great! Then you order the color that most closely matches your car.

Nico29 08-19-2010 02:31 PM

Oh---I just noticed that the one I posted is not the type I have that goes in the back seat. It is called the console car seat and it goes in between the driver and passenger seat.

Look at this one. Very similar to mine but less expensive and you can remove the cover to wash it too.

AmyBeth, yes the straps do go around the car seat but it's real easy to get to the car seat straps and to move them, front or back it just depends on which car I'm driving or Sprocket is riding in, in my SUV he's in the front, in DH's small sedan he's in the back seat. And when you want to store it, it folds down flat taking up about maybe 3" in height. BUT, I am going to buy a big one for the long trips so it can double as a doggie bed. I have looked at the info you guys have given me, sure looks good, thanks. :animal-pa

I have this one and a lot of other members on here have Snoozer carseats. I think they were the original manufacturers of the "lookout" style carseat and they are wonderful!

Rachael1983 08-20-2010 06:36 AM

I saw that article as well. I'd like to get Troy a car seat but one that is okay for the backseat. The lookout one seems like a great find.

Pixie Girl 08-20-2010 06:47 AM

I've been looking for a seat for Pixie to go into a Corvette on the console. I see by this company that they make one. I'll have to look into it more. She loves to set on the console on a towel, but the seat we be alot safer for her and for us. Thanks for the website.

He loves his car seat. He can't wait to get in. His harness attaches to the clip in the seat and he falls right asleep! In fact, I had him on my lap and he was all squirmy until we pulled over and put him in the car seat. I really recommend it and thank you to the person who posted about it this time last year. Expensive--yes, but well worth it! We have the standard in charcoal so add $81 to the price.--$177

This is the one we have, and is worth every penny, they are easy to clean, so comfortable, all year long, my girls love them, and pass their daddy inspection on safety;) they are some pet/car seat that they are not that safe, maybe in a front impact but what if the car roll, those thing can come out. The material is fantastic so soft, we have washed and they clean well, I also put a extra foam with a cover, so I don't have to wash it often. We have the companion and the console seats. Panama69--

Does the console seat ever get in your way while driving. Meaning, does your elbow hit it often??

I need a seat for Snick....he likes to jump out of my lap and look out the window too often.

Thanks-
Snick & Viv

I just bought this one :)

Snoozer Medium Dog Car Seat - Black Up to 25 lbs New - eBay (item 270619357508 end time Sep-07-10 09:52:49 PDT)

Waiting for it to arrive. :)

I love it because Jackson will still be able to look out the window and sniff, etc. And be comfortable and secure at the same time.
