Question about sleeping with a yorkie Hello! Our seven month old Yorkie is presently sleeping in a playpen in her pink bed. Last night during a thunder storm, she must have climbed the playpen wall and fallen to the floor. Thank goodness she's OK!! So.. We were wondering if it's a good idea to have your yorkie sleep with you, and at what age should we start? Mimi, our yorkie, uses a potty pad. Or, should we get a cover for the playpen and continue to keep her in the playpen? She's about 2.5 pounds and we worry that she may get squished if she sleeps in our bed. Does anyone sleep with their tiny yorkies? Is there ever a problem? Will the yorkie sleep through the night at 7 months or will they need to get up throughout the night to use their potty pad? Could we discuss this and hear what other YT members have done with this issue? Thanks so much! Roxie |
Bailey is almost 14 weeks and is also 2.5 pounds.. I really would love to sleep with him but I don't trust myself sleeping near him.. My boyfriend and I are very fidgety.. Maybe when I get a king size bed.. And a plush wall..and a pee pad on it.. Perhaps.. :D |
Mine have always slept with me, from the time they first came home at 12 weeks. I just made sure that a potty pad was in the bathroom, that way when I felt them moving during the night (I am a light sleeper) I could place them on the potty pad to go. Both of mine were trained this way. Consequently, they now always sleep with me or my son, which is nice. Plus that way, if they hear anything unusual going on in the house, I am the first to know about it. One is 4.7lbs. and the other is 7.5lbs. Not quite as small as yours, but you can tell that they are there. |
My yorkie is now 5 years old and weighs 3 lbs and sleeps with me everynight. In the beginning I was so scared she would get squished or stop breathing if she crawled under the covers but you'd be surprised how much you are aware of thier presence at night and vice versa, at least I was. I think the first 2 years I would wake up at least 5 times a night just to check on Chloe. Im finally over any of those fears, lol. My girl is such a cuddle bug and I cant imagine sleeping without her. Also Chloe sleeps through the night without having to go potty but I cant remember at what age that started. She was never very good at telling me at night she needed to potty so I do remember a brief time I had to put a diaper on her at night. hope that helps |
I sleep with both of mine... They are 3 and 7 pounds and I know exactly where they are on our king sized bed all night. Our 7 month old is very good at coming up and scratching me to tell me she wants outside. She usually makes it until around 6 am and then wants to go out. I having them in bed with me and wouldn't have it any other way :) |
My two sleep with me, they are tiny, I do think you become aware of them being there. Bailey sleeps under the covers curled up by my side, and Jesse sleeps up by my pillow. I also have a ramp they can go up and down throughout the night if they wish. I love having them with me :) |
Both of my dogs sleep in the bed and I wouldn't have it any other way :) I have my own personal heating pads..LOL As long as you feel comfortable with the idea, you shouldn't have any problems. |
Apple & Buzz both weigh about 6 lbs., and both sleep w/me...I waited 'till they were both able to go all night w/o having to potty, and both new how to get up and down the steps, beside the bed...I taught them to do steps, by putting a treat on each step, and letting them walk up one at a time...same going down.... |
I think the idea of plush walls is great! I wish i could plush my whole house. Cooper sleeps with me. He's 9 pounds so it's pretty easy to know where he is, which is usually across the bed:rolleyes: My little Max is almost 5 pounds, but as soon as he's potty trained he'll be in the bed too. I would definitely consider getting steps to let the royalty know how to get on/off the bed safely. |
All three of mine sleep with me. My Yorkie is 10 lbs, and my two Biewers are 6.13 lbs and 3.11 lbs. The Biewers are pee pad trained and the Yorkie is not. My Biewers will jump off the bed onto a padded bench at the bottom of my bed and then either down their stairs or right to the floor and use the pee pad. But usually they sleep through the night. The jumping off the bed only happens in the early morning hours of the weekend when we sleep in a bit longer and they can't hold it anymore. My Yorkie will still occasionally get up during the night to go outside. :( |
Jersey Boy is 9lbs and he has slept in the bed since he was 12 weeks but he likes to roam at night and it wakes me up. Miss Brielle is 5 months, 3lbs and has been sleeping in a baby pack n play next to my bed. I would love to have her in the bed but I'm afraid with Jersey roaming she would try to follow him, so she is safer in her bed.:) |
both of my girls have always slept in my bed and neither of them are peepad trained Penny came home at 9 weeks old and she slept in a circle bed on my bed with me curled around it so she HAD TO step on me to get out Sienna was 7 weeks when she came home :( and she went right up on the bed with her big sis she is only 3 pounds right now but she usually sleeps in her bed on my bed she cracks me up because shes the WILD CHILD but shes very shy and polite when she needs to make me up I get a gentle tap and a loving stare ( um excuse me please mommy i have to potty ) Penny is the more reserved one but when she has to go she'll step on your face ( HEY MOM GOTTA PEE ) |
I have 4 of them sleeping with me. They all started sleeping with me the day I brought them home as puppies. I have stairs along side the bed and since they were 16 weeks old they all have used the stairs to get on and off the bed. There are some nights when I am sorry I ever let them sleep on the bed but most nights we all sleep soundly. Now if I could get them to sleep past 5am I would be really happy. |
Gatsby is 6 pounds and he has slept in my bed since he was 8 weeks old first on a crate pad on my bed then on his own pillow he would use the steps go potty by himself and come back to bed. |

My boyfriend is leaving for a week, and I was thinking of letting Harley sleep with me.. but he's such a hyper little boy. I can't seem him settling down? we'll see how lonely I get, Matt's the fidgetty one, not me so I don't think I'd squish him. |
My babies sleep with us...14 yr old 5 lbs and my 2 yr old 8.6 lbs...been sleeping wirh us since they were 5 mos old :) |
Izzy sleeps with us every night....but she's 7 lbs now... I'm a light sleeper so im always aware of where she is at. |
YOU HAVE A CHOICE? From the day Sprocket came to our home, he came to sleep with me/us. Where ever I am, if I'm working late in the office, he sleeps there til I go to bed. Where ever I am, that's where he is, he may snuggle with DH, but doesn't stay. You will get used to your baby being in your bed, being aware, one thing that might help. When Sprocket first came to our house, about 11pm or midnight I would put him out to the back yard, (it's enclosed), I would hide so he couldn't see me and want in and he would go pee. He would then come back to the door to come in, get treats and praise. Then when DH gets up for work about 5am same routine. Treats and praise, treats and praise. The schedule and time. It sure has worked for us. Treats and praise works for retaining ALL sorts of old dogs . Good luck :animal-pa |
Rio (3.2 lbs) and Bullet (2.8 lbs) sleep with my DH and I on our king size bed and have had no problems. As others have said, you learn to be aware of where they are on the bed in the middle of the night. We have stairs that they use, and we also have their crates in the room with the doors removed in case they feel like having some privacy - LOL! Rio sometimes gets in her moods and leaves our bed to sleep in her crate, but usually by morning she's back up on the bed with us. They both know to wake us up if they need to potty in the middle of the night thank goodness! |
Ruby sleeps with my husband and I, she is also 7 months and weighs 2.5 lbs. She sleeps between our pillows. At the end of our bed we have a bench with a bed for her and sometimes she'll sleep there. She usually uses that bed to watch us get ready or while I'm folding laundry she lays there and watches me. I also have stairs that she uses to get in and out of bed, and I keep a pee pad on the floor for her. Leslie |

Levi has slept with me since I got him, and we've never had any problems. He climbs up in my face and licks like crazy when he needs to go out in the morning. Nice alarm clock! |

Zoe doesn't sleep with us but I wish she would. We tried once and she scrambled back and forth on the bed like her butt was on fire. She never would settle down so we had to put her back in her ex-pen, which made her happy because she then went to sleep. Another time we put her in bed and she proceeded to do her business on top of the spread and thru the sheets. I don't think she likes the bed at all...but loves her pen and crate. She's 5 months old. I may try again when she's older. |
Let's put it that way... dh and I are allowed each about 6 inches on the outside of our Yorkies bed... LOL! It's amazing how much room a 5 lbs. furball can claim...??? Seriously, they all sleep with us since the day we got them. They have steps to get up and down if they don't prefer to jump right up. Each of them has his/her own spot with Mikki curling up in my armpit, Maggie being at my feet, Maxie being at my dh's feet and Minnie and Mylo are somewhere in between. I'm always aware where each one of them is and never squished one. It's a mom thing, I guess... Mikki is even defending her priviledge and grawls at any of the others if they come to close to me or when I'm up already and they stay in bed with their daddy then him. We love it like that... Oh... they sleep all through the night but have also piddle pads outside the bedroom door. |
Tinkerbell sleeps in her crate next to my bed, but i often let her get in bed with me in the morning and she loves to take naps in the bed. I imagine once I am more confident in her house breaking she will sleep the entire night with us. |
Before Toby came to us, his foster mom had him sleep in a crate because she already had her three yorkies sleeping with her and her husband. Speedy has always slept with us. I couldn't see making Toby sleep in a crate as we don't crate Speedy at all. The first week he was here he curled up beside me and slept. Now he claims the bottom of the bed. 99% of the time he sleeps through the night and most times I have to get him out of bed to go out and potty when I get up to get ready for work. I wouldn't have it any other way. I just wish our queen sized bed was a king sized bed! |
i can't imagine not sleeping with my lil one she is 3 pounds we share my pillow or she sleeps around my neck hubby said no when i first got her then he said when she could get up on the bed by her self then she could sleep with me that didn't take long i would sit on the bed and call her when he was at work ( THAT WILL BE OUR LIL SECRET ) ;) PAT FROM SOUTH CAROLINA |
Dustee is 2.5 lbs and she has slept with me since the day i brought her home at 12 weeks and she sleeps right next to my head on her blankie Sugar bear is 2.3 lbs and sleeps with me as well but he was 7 weeks when we got him so i waited till he was about 10 weeks and he winned every night and so he made his way into the bed as well both do great thur the night i take them potty about 6 am and then they crawl back in bed wish i could do the same. Ive never had a problem squishing one or anything. All though since moving to the country Dustee will fly off the bed if she hears anything raising all kinds of h_ll. |
