| New to Yorkietalk Hello everyone I just want to say that I am new to Yorkietalk. I am very excited and love how informative this site is. A little bit about myself and my yorkie...My name is Kim and I am a college student going on my third year now. I live off campus with my boyfriend and we decided to get a yorkie to have a bundle of joy roaming around our floors. Our yorkie's name is Romeo and we got him in April of this year, when he was about 2 months old...he just turned 6 months now and I love him more than anything else in the world. My first question is...Is it bad to move Romeo around too much?? I feel like hes always having to start over with me because since I am on vacation I don't stay at home and I'm worried he will forget where his home is...since May Romeos been in Buffalo, Yorktown, Bronx, Port Jefferson Station, Newport news, and now hes back in the Bronx until 2 weeks from now when we go back home to Buffalo. Thanks I will be awaiting some replies. |

| @ Rhetts...Yes he is well traveled...when we traveled to Virginia we went on Southwest, which does not stick pets in cargo, and he was well behaved. I hope that being on board isn't bad for him, it didn'd look bad for him. I know many dogs have died while on cargo so I am not for it at all. It was a smooth trip for the both of us. @Breny...Thank you...and yes he loves to be with me...I never leave him alone unless absolutely necessary...he was with my boyfriend when he went to Port Jefferson Station and I got jealous because he seemed to love him more and whine for him when ever he as much as steped outside the room...so now that he has been with me after that trip he doesn't whine for my boyfriend anymore which I love...he whines for me...that does not sound right lol sounds like I like to hear him whine (which I don't)...that sounds like a problem to most people, they tell me I've got him spoiled and should stop but how can I stop giving him soo much attention when he's soo cute? |

| I've traveled a fair amount with Vinnie over the years. Here are a few things that have helped: 1. Consistent Routine - I always try to keep his routine as consistent as possible when traveling. This means going out for walks and eating at roughly the same time each day. 2. Avoid Alone Time - When you're in an unfamiliar place, try to avoid leaving your little Romeo alone for long periods of time. First, he will naturally be a little afraid, especially if it's the first time being left alone in a strange place. More importantly, however, is that you do not know if the place you're staying at has been "puppy proofed." This is VERY important for puppies who tend to get into things. I've been to many houses of family and friends who had some really dangerous things lying about (prescription drugs, chocolate, poisonous plants, etc). If you have to leave him alone, make sure to do a thorough inspection of the place/room he's staying in. 3. Bring Comforts from Home - Familiar objects, especially ones that smell like you, will go a long way to keeping Romeo comfortable. I always bring some blankets from home, as well as familiar food bowls and other items. If I have to leave Vinnie alone when traveling, I always make sure to leave my luggage with him as a way for him to know I'm coming back. 4. Prepare for Emergencies - One thing I always do when I travel with Vinnie is to familiarize myself with the nearby 24-hour emergency animal hospital. Accidents and sudden illnesses will hopefully not happen, but IMO it never hurts to be prepared. The last thing you want to have to do in an emergency is figure out where you need to go. Call me paranoid, but I'd rather be safe than sorry! And it's so easy to do with Google these days. The more you travel with Romeo, the more he will be exposed to and the more well-rounded he will be. Traveling with Vinnie has helped him behaviorally in more ways than I ever thought possible. I initially traveled with him because I hated the idea of leaving him behind. However, I soon learned that it helped him learn how to adjust to new situations and interact with other people. He really likes traveling and has become the best little traveling dog I could have ever asked for. When I do visit friends and family, he is usually quite fine being left alone in a new place when I go out for dinner.

| @Vinniedoggy...Thank you for all the wonderful tips...Puppy proofing is one of the reasons I am always with Romeo...I am always paranoid about him getting to things he's not suppose to...where I am now we usually stay in one room unless we are going out together and if not I leave him in the room where I am certain he wont get into any danger and has enough space to play alone if he wants...Romeo also has many comforts from home and many new welcome gifts from my family and friends...and the emergency tip is one I've got covered...I am also very paranoid and concerned about Romeo's well being...He is my first pet ever...my parents never let me have a doggy while growing up so I really take care of him...even before I got him I made sure I had emegency money saved just in case anything because I know vets aren't cheap. |
