Tails Why would anybody leave a tail on a yorkie is it not the standard to have them docked? It just looks odd to me. |
I love the tails on ALL dogs and don't think it looks odd at all. Jackson has a tail and he waves it proudly. Frankly, I think it's rude to say it looks odd. That would be like me saying your dog looks odd because he has a nub. It's his communicator. I know when he's gonna bark (tail all the way upright), when he's excited (wagging like crazy), when he's super scared (tucked under the legs), if he's just sort of happy (a slow wag). Tail docking has been banned in a lot of other places except the US. I hope soon the US will follow suit. I feel it's a totally pointless procedure done simply for looks and to fit the standard of humans. Those are just my feelings. Now with that said, that doesn't mean I don't find little nubs to be super cute as well!! I wouldn't not get a dog simply because it doesn't have a tail and I realize it's the standard. |
My little guy has a docked tail, but I think long tails (though not the standard in the US) are beautiful! Several members have Yorkies with long tails, and I love them. Since docking is cosmetic, some people feel it is inhumane or just isn't necessary. I'm pretty sure that tail docking is illegal in the UK now, for example. |
I personally love the long tails on yorkies. It just adds to their expressiveness, IMO. Both of mine came docked, but it's not something I would ever willingly put a dog through. I understand the original reasoning behind it, and hence why it was put in the standard. But since we aren't sending yorkies in to places to chase down rats any longer, I would love to see the standard be amended. |

Tails Hello sorry if I offended anyone it wasn't my intention. I think it's great either way I am just used to seeing them docked so it was just different to see them another way. But all of your babies are cute all the same. |
my oldest i got while i was in germany & it's illegal to alter the looks of dogs there (dock tails) and i LOVE her tail. when we decided to look for another addition to our family, i could NOT find another yorkie WITH a tail as they dock them at a few days old. so we settled on getting a docked tail.. i will say, i PREFER the tail because it has more "wag" than a docked. But seeing the lil nub try to wag is pretty funny... I have photo's of both in my albums if you want to check it out. I leave the tail long so the hair falls and their tails naturally curl over their backs, kind of like shih tzu's in case you were wondering. But when they thing they are in trouble, the DO tuck their tails which is HILARIOUS!!! |
I love the long tails and hope someday the US makes it illegal to dock. I just can't believe they don't feel pain and the risk of infection scares me. |
I agree with Britster that it was rude to say an undocked tail looks 'odd'. How would you feel if I said your baby looked odd? :( A person might choose to leave the tail because they feel it is cruel to dock an animals tail without a purpose. I have one with a docked tail and one without. My female's tail was not docked because she was tiny at birth (3 oz) and her owner preferred that she survive and therefore did not put her through the stress of having her tail docked. |

Whether one likes a docked tail or not is a matter of personal preference and personal preferences shouldn't be imposed on anyone. |

OP, it is my understanding that the yorkie tail was initially docked because it was helpful to their job. These little dogs were bred to catch rats. Without a long tail that could get caught on things, and it made it easier to pull them by the tail without hurting them. Now, how often are we going to pull our yorkies by the tail? |

I didn't take it as being rude. You just stated that it looked odd to you, and I can understand that. When you are used to seeing something a certain way, any deviation may look a little strange until you get used to it. I thought cocker spaniels with long tails looked weird until I got to know one- now I think they look kind of bare with out the flag flying. |
I like the long tails and I wish docking wasn't one of akc's standards. |
