Rat in the house This morning about 4:30 am went to the kitchen to make some coffee, followed by my entourage  turned on the lamp in the living rm which my kitchen is separated by a bar/counter. walked back to get me a cup of coffee, Tilly of whom I thought was getting pissed at sami (too early to play) and she was sounding pretty vicious was really killing a rat! all three of them ted, & sami was actually getting in tilly's way I could not believe that I had a rat in my house! I live in the mountains and had been told there are tree rats but dumb me they live in trees? never thought they could get in my home! So I will have to call a pest control to have my home evaluated if i have a problem, I have never seen any rat poo or any evidence of sharing my home with a rat? But Tilly is my hero :D or maybe I already have Rat control  |
 Grab all your babies and RUN!!!!! I would be mortified!! ;) Good luck ... I would be very careful what an exterminator put down to kill the rats! I don't know exactly how that works but it would seem if they dropped dead where your babies might get them would it harm your babies?? I think the way you do ... if they are tree rats, why don't they stay up there?? |
That would freak me right out, I am petrified of rats and mice. I love snakes spiders etcc but get one of those varmits and I run like a screaming child. Rats are smart though they will send 1 or 2 in and if they do not come back they will move on for it is not safe, mice will come in by the hoards and are not that smart. I would rather get rid of rats then mice. We put poison in our basement every fall and spring,we do not go in the basement (dirt floor and the old limerock foundation). We had a mouse a couple of weeks ago they(dogs) tried to get him but never got him ,ended up trapping him in the middle of the night. But found a dead rat in our pond that we drained(was some water left in it he must of went for a drink and ended up drowning). We live in big farm country and the rats and mice are moving now looking for a warm place to stay for the winter. They have big live traps for them, and big snap traps for them.I would be careful of what the exterminator would use to get rid of them, Good luck getting rid of those nasty things, they are probably just moving as winter is coming and they are looking for a nice warm home. |
I read thatYorkies were originally bred as ratters and were used to kill rats in the mills in Scotland. S/W |

I think the way you do ... if they are tree rats, why don't they stay up there?? haha I know Im glad Im not the only one that thought this  where I use to live (in the almond) orchard there were Nordic rats? they were as big as cats! and my pest control company knew I had dogs and had used these cans with little holes in them with a lock on top, and filled it with some kind of poison that would make them get thirtsy and when they drank it would kill them! your right I am afraid what they would use? I am going to ask when I call them and explain that I have very curious babies and what type or what do they use and where will they put it? maybe it would just be safer not to even have that kind of service? 011011 advice seems to make sense in regards to them sending in few and seeing how many return? maybe this is the only one? so maybe before I jump the gun I will keep my eyes wide open for any evidence like poo, although I just checked my all my cabinets and drawers and nothing? where else would they hide or how did it get in? I have a doggy door maybe there? |

Rats are gnawers....they could climb up anywhere...under the awning to the roof...etc....gnaw their way in...thank god you have a "posse" there to keep you safe! My sister rented an apartment in some "hip" and upcoming neighborhood near her university here in Chicago. It was beautiful, with french doors, moulded ceilings...fireplace. Well...she woke up one night to see a Rat sitting on her chest! She called me hysterical and could not sleep the whole night. Needless to say....that lease didn't last long...hahaha.. Francie |
They were doing their job! Sounds like they did a good one! |
 Sitting on her chest!?!?!? OMG ... I would've started packing right then .... no .... I would've run screaming from that apartment & sent for my stuff!!! My son's Siamese Cat [TC] brought a little one in our house [about 30 years ago]. When Christopher & I saw it and jumped screaming in the middle of the dining room table, scared TC, he dropped it and it took his Dad hours to catch it!!! I wanted to sell the house & move ... we didn't, but I never, ever forgot it!! ;) |

Oh my God. That is my worst nightmare. We live behind a farm that sells fire wood and across the street from a wildlife preserve with a LOT of woods. When my daughter was 4 she was playing in her doll house in the back yard and came and brought me the "dead Hamster" she found. I totally freaked out and called the board of health disinfected my daughter and the doll house. I would die if I found one in my house. Mac & Mellie haven't seen a rat yet. But they chase our resident chip monks, Chip, Dale, and chocolate all around the pool. |
Ohhhh myyyyy goshhhhh! I would totally freak! I think rats are about the ugliest, creepiest things and can't imagine having one in my house! Once when I opened my dryer to get out my clothes, there was a mouse in there! I got the everlov'n creeps and dreamed about mice and rats for a few days. I also got the creeps everytime I opened my dreyer and took my clothes out very carefully, one piece at a time! |
I know some people keep rats as pets so if you do, do not read the rest of this post. I hat rats, mice, spiders, and snakes. I am glad you had your babies their to warn you and protect you. Aren't yorkies great!! :yorkiesar |
I hate those things but you know, we are all subject to getting some type of pest. Here in Fl it is roaches, yuk. I have a pest control company on contract but I still have one or two, the girls will bark and bark, so I know something has either died or is barely alive crawling around. And, talk about rats, my daughter had them in an older house here and actaully sold it because one came into her house. She moved to a well regarded neighborhood and guess what, she has them there as well. Why? She bought a house with about 15 fruit trees in the back and they come after the fruit and chew their way into her attic. As good as her oranges are, I'd chop every last one down. Or, maybe I should send Chloe and Lacey over to take care of the problem. Seriously, I also suggest being careful with poisons. I will take a few roaches rather than subject my two to getting poisoned. Chloe got a squirrel one day, scared me to death but the vet said she was ok because she had her shots. |

Francie! I have rat patrol :) I would die!!! if any of my babies had died from killing a rat that had eaten poison! and with that guilt I could not live with myself knowing I freaked over one rat? and then had poison put around my house! thinking this will keep them out! Thank you yorkieusa for this information!! |

Yorkies Rock :D |
Those nasty things can squeeze through the tiniest crack and get in ,it is unbelievable. You will not usually find poop unless they are visiting alot and having a trail that they follow.Did you know that rats and mice leave a pee trail that is how they know where to go.GROSS isnt it I get chills up my back just thinking about them. When farmers clean out the corn bins you will see HUGE RATS I mean bigger than a cat, nasty long tails and big teeth, and long claws.Hopefully that is all you have just the loner. I have never heard of tree rats do they nest up there? Yorkies were bred for ratters but it scares me to think of them getting bitten in the proccess of killing it, they carry so many diseases. We have a huge corn pile about a mile away the corn is coming out so fast from the fields and the elevators are full so the farmers are dumping the corn at this location, the neighbors to this place are already talking about the problem they are going to have with rats this fall because of it. |

YUCK!!!!!!! However, I think you already do have rat control-our little guys were rat/mice catchers back in the day in mines in England-that's what I read in a yorkie book. If you have anymore I'm sure your guys will catch them. Be careful when they spray your house should they need to, it can be harmful for our little guys. Good luck! YUCK! |

Well they are picking corn all around us and missy has her nose to the grind stone. Shes at the wood pile everyday looking for a mouse or mole. But she thinks that you have to bring them to daddy after u kill them. |
Wow, your Yorkies killed a rat?…That’s cool. I hope they didn't make too much of a mess though. |

:D yep Im the proud mama!! I thought Tilly was having a tizzy over the boys wanting to play so early but she sounded really vicious  I can hear them all running barking you know that sound :p ted the shred & sami was actually getting in her way, then tilly went under the end table I guess it ran under there then I hear her bang her poor head then I thought OMG maybe she was having a seizure? tilly has cushings and weighs 16lbs :p I almost panicked, I did panic I tried to pull ted, & sami back to get tilly and there she was rat in the mouth and her jaw was qivering! I told her put it down girly girl good baby! I reached for a floor pillow to block them from getting back under the table I ran to get something to pick it up? tongs?? so I grabbed it with a paper towel & all of them still excited, barking like crazy dogs around 4:30 am as I ran with it outside trying to calm them before my neighbors called the police  the only mess that was made was by me, when I grabbed for the papertowels! I threw the roll down so I could hurry and get the rat! well when I came in ted the shred & sami had the whole roll shredded in just about a min?? It was a medium size stinky black rat! I asked my neighbor when I came home from work and asked her if she had them ever in her house and why are they called tree rats? she said there called tree rats because they climb trees to cross over roofs to get in your nice warm home  anyway now I can laugh! and Im going to shampoo my carpets, counters doorways Im going to really clean this weekend after what 011011 told us! Did you know that rats and mice leave a pee trail that is how they know where to go |
WE have had mice in the past and my westie goes bananas and will not leave an area after she has seen one...she becomes absolutely obsessed...we know what she was bred to do!!!! LOL |

Oh I hate rats. |
Any tips from your yorkie to mine. lol My husband caught one about a week ago. :whew:I hoped that would be it because I am terrified of mice. But no I just saw a baby mouse in the hallway of our apt. Needless to say I completely paniced :panic:. I woke my husband out of his sleep and told him get the mouse. He said you woke me up, you should be waking up your son. He is suppose to kill mice. So I did I made both of them wake up and try to get the mouse. By then it had ran into my hall closet. My husband made Major guard the door while he moved some things around in the closet. I was too upset to see Major just sitting there looking at the mouse. I swear that mouse was laughing at us. Major barks and bites at his toys all day long. He will run up and down the floor growling and barking at all of his toys all day. He will sit there and bite his dad's hands and feet playing with him but just sat and looked at the mouse. He did paw at it once or twice but when the mouse ran, he just sat there. I thought he was suppose to at least chase the thing. I could use some help with this ppplllleeeaaassseee!!!!!! |

I would go buy some of those safe mouse traps that you can catch them in and just throw them away or some of those super gooey and sticky trays - not the sticky cardboard - and place those where your yorkie can't get to them. |
I have to say as someone who has kept pet rats fancy rats and wild rats are are completely diffrent my sister has two fancy hooded rats as a school project she had to build agility course and teach them to run it it took her about 4 weeks and they wear cute when the project was done my grandmother did not want rats in her house so i ended up with them. they wear very clean. the pooped and peed in a litter box they wear smart they could beg or sit. they wear sweet my sister would come over and bath them in puppy shampoo once a week and they never started to smell (well a little on Friday before she come over) now wild rats are just as smart but they are also mean they will bite your hand off before they would take a bit of oatmeal from it they will pee in your house and even attack your dogs and cats if they don't attack them first also if you have a nest of wild rats they smell awful they dont groom themselves because if they smell like spoiled food a cat or dog or fox is less likely to want to eat them I would one day maybe own a pet rat again but i would freak out and scream if i had a wild rat in my house |
