Grooming Dilema I can't find a groomer I like. Either there are chunks of hair clipped off of her ear or I am suspicious about how she is being treated when I'm not there. I also don't like dropping her off and being told she will be there all day in a cage. I am interested in trying to learn how to clip my Yorkie myself. Does anyone out there cut their Yorkie's hair?. I live in an area where there aren't that many groomers. I have been going on word of mouth but that isn't helping. I get referred to a lot of groomers that don't impress me. Any direction would be appreciated. |

I do both my dogs (and the other 4 humans here too!) I started on my wheaten terrier Lucy 9 years ago, no one around here was to familiar with the breed and wanted $50 -I figured I could do that and started practicing! Ziva is a lot smaller so it goes way faster, I have kept her in a puppy cut until now,I use a dulled point scissor, I have tried the clippers but her hair seems too fine or soft, I might have to buy a finer trimmer. I sit her on a towel on the kitchen counter, put some treats in front of her and sing or hum "pretty dog" nonsense.I start on her back and if she cooperates I keep going. some times I break it into 2 days. If you trim before every bath you can keep it up easily. |
I have groomed my li'l one myself she was 12 weeks old...she is now 3 1/2. I just had her 1st professional grooming last week. I found a mobile groomer who comes to your home and grooms your pet in the comfort of your home. I was extremely impressed with her and I was able to be there and see exactly how she handled my baby and watch her grooming expertise. The weather was beautiful so she set up her supplies/table outside on my patio...My lil one did wonderfully for her first experience...I think she was more comfortable due to being at home in a familiar enviorment and not in a cage at some strange location....I would ask around and see if there are any mobil groomers in your area...Best of Luck to you.... |
Many people here groom at home. Check out the grooming section for tips. Here is a set of video tutorials made by a YT member: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...cerella02.html |
I do a lot of my dog's grooming myself. But a couple times a year, once in spring and once in fall I have a mobile dog groomer come to give him the full treatment. I LOVE the mobile groomer!!! Not only is she awesome and really good at her job, but she comes right to my house so there is no waiting around in a cage for Boo. Plus, she lets me watch her and talk to my dog so that he stays calm and I know he is being treated well. If you have a mobile groomer in your area you might want to give that a try. Also, I found my groomer through my vet. You might want to check with your vet and see if there is a local groomer that they would recommend. |
I don't do grooming myself but I found an amazing mobile groomer who does a GREAT job and she's done within 45mins-1 hour, and he's not put in a cage or anything, she treats him nice and he's always happy and looking good when he's done! It can get pricey but it's worth it to me ($55 each time, plus a tip). I get him the mobile groomer every 10 weeks. |
We don't have a mobil groomer for 40 miles here. I wish I knew how to groom dogs....sounds like an ideal job. I keep her in a puppy cut because of her thick fur. I am thinking of asking a groomer at our training center if she would give me a few lessons on routine clipping for a Yorkie. Thanks |
I am learning how to trim my babies too, not because of them being caged, but to lower the cost. I usually take mine to PetCo and I have one groomer that I've been going to that knows that I DO NOT want them to put my babies in a cage/kennel. She knows to make me an appointment when I do not have to wait long for her to start grooming. I hand one over to her, watch, switch babies, watch, pay, then go home. I am always there in the store. I do not leave. I did purchase a video, but after hearing there is info here, I'm going to check it out. |
The cost savings would be great too. I'm going to talk to the groomer I know and see if she'll give me a few lessons. I've been looking on the internet for schools around here that I could call but the closest is Chicago. |
