My new little guy is flying in tomorrow, need some advice. My new boy ( he is 3.4lbs and 2 years old ) is getting put on a flight tomorrow. Here is my dilemma. He has a flight that will take him from his original destination, to a place about 7hrs from where I live. There is a 4 hr delay, and he is then moved to another plane that then continues on to my town. I have a friend that lives in the town where the layover is. Should I have her go pick him up and bring him back when the next flight resumes?, or should I keep him with the airline? The lady at the airport said it was best to keep him there because people will be checking on him. So altogether He will have an hour fight, a 4 hour stay on the ground and another 40 minute flight to my place. I'm sick thinking about it. I inquired about getting a flight out to meet him, but the lady said it doesn't make a difference, animals are not allowed in the plane with you on that flight:( |
If I were in your situation I would have my friend pick him up. I would not want my baby on a plane any longer then he has to.... |
How long is the first flight? and there there is a 4 hour delay before next flight which is a 7 hour flight? Not long till you have your baby home :D. xxx |
That is a terrible delimma. I hope everything works out! |
Darlene, I'm honestly not trying to scare you...but this is what happened here in Tulsa this week. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...es-flight.html I don't know what airling you're using, whether or not he will be in cargo, or what the temps are like there. But a 4 hour layover is a long time no matter how you look at. I'd at least have your friend go and sit with him for part of that layover if possible. I'm sure the airline employees will do their best, but they also have other duties to attend to. I'm sooooo excited for you, Bailey and Jesse!! :D |
Oh Darlene I am so excited that you are getting your new puppy! As for your friend picking him up, I doubt the airlines would allow it. When the breeder shipped Beamer to me she had to fill out the form for the airline and Bruce and I were the only ones authorized to pick him up, and had to show ID to get him. He also had a 4 hour layover. |

"He will have an hour fight, a 4 hour stay on the ground and another 40 minute flight to my place" I think the 7 hours is the distance (roadwise) from Darlene's to where the layover is. |
It would have been so much better if you had either paid the breeder's flight round trip or you go there and bring him back, but since he's already left, I would have my friend go to at least look at him and make sure he has some water and ask her to get Nutri-Cal and give him about a dime size. I hope and pray he makes it to you ok. Oh, and give your friend your phone number to take with her in case someone would need to call and ask your permission for your friend to see the puppy. |

No the total time in the air is almost 2 hrs. 1 hr to my friends town, the a 4 hr wait until the next plane leaves for my town, which is 40 minutes away. It isn't hot here, I'm not worried about that, it is only like 15 degrees celsius and rain lately. The lady I'm getting him from said he will probably sleep during the wait, and taking him out to strangers and bringing him back may be to stressful. She is a caring lady, she cried on the phone about letting him go and made me promise to send pics and video of him every once in awhile. |

This is a very small town, and a itty bitty airport, I will be in constant touch with the airline, I'm going to call them tomorrow when the flight arrives and make sure he is okay, and see if my friend can see him. I know they are strick on things, but it doesn't hurt to call:) |
I agree it doesn't hurt to call - the worst thing that can happen is they say "no". I can't wait to see pics. Can you tell us which breeder you decided on?:) |
I highly recommend seeing if your friend can at least check on your new baby. My brother is a breeder who recently shipped a few puppies to me to sell for him. These were good sized puppies so we werent afraid of the flight as they were all bigger than my 1 yro baby. (Tulsa to Washington DC) Imagine my horror when I picked the little guys up and realized they had not had ANY food or water durring their layover! (How did I know? My brother put stickers at the bottom of the dishes. No crumbs or soggyness to the dishes!!!!) Luckily the little guys did fantastic. But if they had been smaller? I'm not sure. :-/ |
I too suggest you see if your friend could check on him. I hope everything works out okay and congrats on finding him. |
Yes, I am going to have her go to the airport to check on him. |
Darlene go pick him up Quote:
Okay i'm a worry wart so that's out there. Only 7 hour drive. go to the airport pick him up. No worries about weather layover 4hr wait, what happens if engine trouble etc.. Stay with your friend overnight you have your pup in your arms, then do the drive home. |

I just called my friend, The plane arrives in her town at 12:40pm..she is going to go to the airport when the flight arrives and make sure he is doing okay and being properly cared for, I will be calling the airline as well. I have a tremendous stress headache and feel terrible about him being there alone. |
I think everyone is worrying a little too much. I'm a flight attendant for United. I've seen alot of dogs shipped and he is 2 years old not a puppy, so hypoglycemia is usually not a problem. He will be so cute that all the ramp personnel will probably fawn over him. I'm sure he will be perfectly fine and you will have him with you in no time!! Congrats and relax! |

Thanks for the reassurance, I feel like crying, plus I'm hormonal again, It's going to be a rough night! |

Ahhhh Darlene! Congrats! I will say a prayer that all goes well with your babie's flight! He is about the same size as my Faith...except she has lost weight since being ill, but 3.4 is her normal weight. I can't wait to hear about the reunion. I wonder if you should have your friend give him a little nutrical when she sees him. I know he is 2, but he is small and this flight could be stressful for him. Best wishes and I'm anxious to see pictures of your new addition! |
Having your friend check up on Jesse will help alot and give you reassurance. keep us posted on his arrival...can wait for the photo's :) |
