Maddies surgery Mishap--when will this end Most of you know what happened to maddie about a month ago--well a couple hours ago i was rubbing maddies tummy looking at her nasty scar they left when they tried to spay her AGAIN:mad:--and then all the sudden my fingers were wet??? i looked down and ALOT of yellow pus (sorry) was comming out of the end of her scar--i rush her to the other vet, and they said it maybe a reaction to the internal stitches, and gave me a stronger antibiotic for the next 10 days-----i dont understand this, maddie was on meds after the surgery screw up and her tummy was kept clean and looked good except for a larger nasty scar, and she been acting just fine. also she never had a reaction to the first spay the rescue did right b4 i adopted her???? i glad i caught it---but i dont understand this infection---and now that im thinking about it-do you think theres a chance it might have spread to her internal organs??? again shes acting like nothings wrong--but im so worried about her. and why did this become infected??? |
maybe should have put this under another thread--but as of right now its not a emergency. Im just confused and worried. |
Poor Maddie. If you didn't see any redness or swelling of the outer incision (and knowing how vigilant you are with her, I know you would have seen it) then it sounds like the second vet is on to the right cause- it could be a reaction to the internal dissolvable stitches. The longer it takes for them to dissolve, the more likely they are to cause an infection. It sounds like you and the second vet are on top of things. |
It is great that you were attentive to her scar and caught it. As long as she is on antibiotics they will fight any bacterial infection within her body whether it is localized or systemic. Keeping her on it until she has finished the prescribed amount is important, as you well know. I am sure that she will come out of this with flying colors....especially with you around!:D I am just sorry that both of you have gone through so much with these surgeries. |
You're a great mommy. I hope Maddie gets all healed up soon. Sorry she's been through so much. |
what was the original story with Maddie's spay. i didn't catch that one and i'm interested in it. link? i'm so sorry you seem to have had a horrible time lately with her health..i pray that she gets well soon and this heals fast and you have no more health issues with her poor little self. |

You are such a good mommy to Maddie....the fact that you are constantly watching her for any sign of things not being right. You are on top of everything. Maddie is so lucky to have you. Both of you take care. |
I am so sorry that you have a time with all of this. You are such a good and attentive mommy. Hoping that everything will calm down for the both of you soon. Hugs. |
I am glad that you caught this early , & very sorry that your little Maddie has ended up with an infection :( Hope that she heals well , and will be ok. |
update Thankyou everyone so much--you all help me get threw this so much-- i just got back from taking maddie back to the vet AGAIN--she had a allergic reaction to the new meds---had to get a shot to help with that and new meds--vet is worried she may react to those to--told me to wait till 9 am and give her 1, and at the fisrt sign of any trouble call, if there is any. i forgot to mention the incison opened alittle more-he thinks it due to all the infection that was inside, even though it looked pretty normal, but said it should heal back up. he said its hard cuz maddie reacts to so many things:( Please keep her in your thoughts---Thankyou everyone again;) |
Poor maddie :( I dont have any experience with spaying a dog as my Jess was spayed when we got her and Poppy is still to young. But I can give you this input about internal stitches... Last year I had an operation to remove a birthmark on my leg for medical reasons and I had dissolving stitches both internal and external. I had both because it was on my shin and they needed to do two sets of stitches to make sure it didnt open up because there isnt much give on the skin on your shin so it was very tight. Anyway it opened up and started to weep and I was told that it was because the external stitches heal much quicker then the internal ones and sometimes they can open up because both are not fully healed. It did eventually heal it just took a bit longer. (I know this dosnt have much to do with spaying a dog lol but maybe the stitches heal in the same sort of way Im not sure) Just make sure the area is kept clean so it dosnt get infected and it should heal quickly :) |
Poor little Maddie has been through so much. I'm very glad you're there to watch out for her and take such good care of her. Sending prayers that this infection will heal quickly. And sending her some gentle hugs from me and my gang. Bonny |
