New to Yorkies & Yorkie Talk Hi Everyone! I'm Kim, a new mommy to a 12 week old Yorkie, Bazinga :aimeeyork. He's the first small breed, boy dog I've ever had so it's been interesting so far. Here's the info on what I'm doing so far...if anyone has any advice or constructive criticism on what I'm doing please feel free to contact me. :) Birthday April 24, 2010 Age 13 weeks Weight 1.85 lbs Diet Food - Wellness Puppy - 1/8 cup 3 times a day (should he be eating more?) Suppliments - I give him a small squirt of nutri-cal for puppies on days I feel he didn't eat enough. Health Vet - Loving Hands Animal Clinic - Alpharetta, GA Parasites - He had a few parasites, so I gave him the meds the Vet gave me & hopefully those are cleared up now (have to take him to reevaluate this week. Grooming Bath Time - currently 2 times a week w/ Medicated Shampoo to help skin infection, but plan to bathe once a week w/ Finishing Touch Oatmeal Puppy Shampoo Grooming - alternating combing & brushing (he won't sit still very long so...it's a bit of a challenge) & Spritz 2 times a week w/ Finishing Touch Oatmeal Puppy Spray Cold - I'm not used to such a small puppy, and he gets cold really easy, especially during bath time. Any advice? Blow dry - he hates the hairdryer any advice??? Using my diffuser helps but not much  Thank you! :) Kim H. |
Welcome, wow lots of info there. Lets see, about the food have you thought of maybe free feeding as he is very small. You really have to make sure they have food and water whenever they need it, at least until he is bigger and can maintain his sugar level. As for bath time, you may have to warm the room your in as they can get chilled very easy, maybe have a towel ready fresh from the warm dryer as well. Please be sure you dry him all the way so he does not get a chill, these little ones can get sick pretty easy. As for the dryer you could try a pet dryer they don't get hot so you don't have to worry about burning them so much. He may never enjoy being dryad, but he will get used to it. Just keep following the vets advice and make sure he gets red of those parasites as they wont go away on their own. Congratulations on your new baby. Please post pictures when you can, we love to see the babies. |
I love the idea of the warm towel after the bath. Thank you so much! My hairdryer has a low setting that just blows a very slightly warm air...so burning is not an issue. (not as warm as a towel out of the dryer for sure). My concern w/ total free feeding is that I'm still softening his food with warm water (dunno if I should still be) and I know bacteria can grow on it if left uneaten. Have you had problem with this? Should I stop softening his food? I meant to put that in my last post, but I forgot. I'm also giving Wellness Puppy treats on occasions where he surprises me w/ his good behavior. I break them in half b4 I give them. He has to chew on them pretty good but he seems to do fine with them. As far as the parasites go, I'm definitely doing what the dr has asked. I also try to keep his room clean to avoid any sticking around. I'm using Paw Friendly floor cleaner...but I'm concerned about how "effective" this stuff is at killing germs. Any ideas? |
Hi. Thank you for the advice. I posted a reply, but I wasn't sure which way of replying would notify you. I also posted some pictures of Bazinga. Hope you can check them out. :) |
Wow you seem to be really good with knowing what to do. My little girl comes home in 3weeks and i seem a bit lost in your post you seem to know so much. I think i need to do more research, thank you :D xxx |
Awww...haha furbutt - Don't worry. Haha I'm just one of those people that analyze everything! I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Like a new mommy. Good luck w/ your baby :) |

Ok silly question... What is nutri-cal?? what do i use it for? can someone explain this to me a little? Also where do i get it from in England? lol sorry xxx |
It's just a way to add extra calories if the puppy isn't getting it in his diet naturally. Tomlyn Nutri-Cal Puppy Dietary Supplement at PETCO |
As for keeping the food wet, I would think he should be able to have dry kibble by now. It's good for his teeth, keeps them cleaner and helps the adult ones come in. You might want to get some bully sticks also for him to chew on, he should start teething in a month or so and my chew things you would not like. You could always feed him the wet at meals and leave the dry out all the time if it makes you feel better. |

He is adorable! My puppies are 16 weeks old and about 4 pounds. I've had one yorkie before these two. I'm definitely not an expert either but here's my 2 cents: I don't know about Paw Friendly. I just picked up a can of Clean and Green floor cleaner at Petco and I was wondering the same thing about whether it's killing germs. Before that, I was using Lysol. I agree with the other poster about the kibble. I give my 2 Nutro "Nature's Choice" puppy canned food and toss a handful of Royal Canin Yorkshire puppy dry food on top of the canned. The dry food is good for their teeth and small breed dogs do tend to have dental problems. I would also not bathe him so much once his skin infection clears up. Overbathing can dry out their skin. Sounds like you are doing great with him though! There is so much good info on here. How is the housebreaking going? By the way, it sounds like we may be neighbors.:) I live in Alpharetta also and I use Johns Creek Animal Clinic. |
