New to Yorkies & Yorkie Talk Hi Everyone! I'm Kim, a new mommy to a 12 week old Yorkie, Bazinga :aimeeyork. He's the first small breed, boy dog I've ever had so it's been interesting so far. Here's the info on what I'm doing so far...if anyone has any advice or constructive criticism on what I'm doing please feel free to contact me. :) Birthday April 24, 2010 Age 13 weeks Weight 1.85 lbs Diet Food - Wellness Puppy - 1/8 cup 3 times a day (should he be eating more?) Suppliments - I give him a small squirt of nutri-cal for puppies on days I feel he didn't eat enough. Health Vet - Loving Hands Animal Clinic - Alpharetta, GA Parasites - He had a few parasites, so I gave him the meds the Vet gave me & hopefully those are cleared up now (have to take him to reevaluate this week. Grooming Bath Time - currently 2 times a week w/ Medicated Shampoo to help skin infection, but plan to bathe once a week w/ Finishing Touch Oatmeal Puppy Shampoo Grooming - alternating combing & brushing (he won't sit still very long so...it's a bit of a challenge) & Spritz 2 times a week w/ Finishing Touch Oatmeal Puppy Spray Cold - I'm not used to such a small puppy, and he gets cold really easy, especially during bath time. Any advice? Blow dry - he hates the hairdryer any advice??? Using my diffuser helps but not much  Thank you! :) Kim H. |
Welcome, wow lots of info there. Lets see, about the food have you thought of maybe free feeding as he is very small. You really have to make sure they have food and water whenever they need it, at least until he is bigger and can maintain his sugar level. As for bath time, you may have to warm the room your in as they can get chilled very easy, maybe have a towel ready fresh from the warm dryer as well. Please be sure you dry him all the way so he does not get a chill, these little ones can get sick pretty easy. As for the dryer you could try a pet dryer they don't get hot so you don't have to worry about burning them so much. He may never enjoy being dryad, but he will get used to it. Just keep following the vets advice and make sure he gets red of those parasites as they wont go away on their own. Congratulations on your new baby. Please post pictures when you can, we love to see the babies. |
I love the idea of the warm towel after the bath. Thank you so much! My hairdryer has a low setting that just blows a very slightly warm air...so burning is not an issue. (not as warm as a towel out of the dryer for sure). My concern w/ total free feeding is that I'm still softening his food with warm water (dunno if I should still be) and I know bacteria can grow on it if left uneaten. Have you had problem with this? Should I stop softening his food? I meant to put that in my last post, but I forgot. I'm also giving Wellness Puppy treats on occasions where he surprises me w/ his good behavior. I break them in half b4 I give them. He has to chew on them pretty good but he seems to do fine with them. As far as the parasites go, I'm definitely doing what the dr has asked. I also try to keep his room clean to avoid any sticking around. I'm using Paw Friendly floor cleaner...but I'm concerned about how "effective" this stuff is at killing germs. Any ideas? |
Hi. Thank you for the advice. I posted a reply, but I wasn't sure which way of replying would notify you. I also posted some pictures of Bazinga. Hope you can check them out. :) |
Wow you seem to be really good with knowing what to do. My little girl comes home in 3weeks and i seem a bit lost in your post you seem to know so much. I think i need to do more research, thank you :D xxx |
Awww...haha furbutt - Don't worry. Haha I'm just one of those people that analyze everything! I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Like a new mommy. Good luck w/ your baby :) |

Ok silly question... What is nutri-cal?? what do i use it for? can someone explain this to me a little? Also where do i get it from in England? lol sorry xxx |
It's just a way to add extra calories if the puppy isn't getting it in his diet naturally. Tomlyn Nutri-Cal Puppy Dietary Supplement at PETCO |
As for keeping the food wet, I would think he should be able to have dry kibble by now. It's good for his teeth, keeps them cleaner and helps the adult ones come in. You might want to get some bully sticks also for him to chew on, he should start teething in a month or so and my chew things you would not like. You could always feed him the wet at meals and leave the dry out all the time if it makes you feel better. |

He is adorable! My puppies are 16 weeks old and about 4 pounds. I've had one yorkie before these two. I'm definitely not an expert either but here's my 2 cents: I don't know about Paw Friendly. I just picked up a can of Clean and Green floor cleaner at Petco and I was wondering the same thing about whether it's killing germs. Before that, I was using Lysol. I agree with the other poster about the kibble. I give my 2 Nutro "Nature's Choice" puppy canned food and toss a handful of Royal Canin Yorkshire puppy dry food on top of the canned. The dry food is good for their teeth and small breed dogs do tend to have dental problems. I would also not bathe him so much once his skin infection clears up. Overbathing can dry out their skin. Sounds like you are doing great with him though! There is so much good info on here. How is the housebreaking going? By the way, it sounds like we may be neighbors.:) I live in Alpharetta also and I use Johns Creek Animal Clinic. |
Welcome to YT. Your baby is adorable:) Just wanna kiss his widdle face. :p You seem to have your bases covered. Refreshing to see somone who had done some research before bringing home the baby :) |
Welcome Kim! I'm close by you in Cumming. Your Bazinga and my Scarlett share the same bday. You sound like you've got a great handle on things already. As far as floor cleaners and such- I use a steam mop and Nature's Miracle. We are going through a grooming challenge, too. Scarlett hates everything to do with it at the moment. I've found that brushing her out is the easiest if I do it in the evening just before she falls asleep. Can't wait to see pics of your little man. |
Welcome! Enjoy your baby. I marvel everyday at what Mia is doing! So I am sure you will also. They just beg being nuzzled! |

Your little one is just so very cute. You seem to have done your research as a new yorkie mommy. How lucky your little one is. Congrats!! |
Wow, that is a very unique name! Bazinga! I love it, looks like you did some research before you picked him up and are doing well. Sorry I don't have any advice, but there are quite a few experienced yorkie owners on that can help you! Welcome! |
On the bathing front, I've always wrapped my babies up in lots of towels after bath and cuddled with them close to my chest for a bit until they have stopped shaking, you can also keep part of your dog covered while you blow dry one part of him Also make sure you dry his ears well inside and out. Make sure you keep his ear canal clean and open. Sometimes that may mean you need to pluck the inside hairs. You can speak to your vet about this and get her to show you how if you are unsure about it. Bath time is perfect time to check your baby all over. Also make sure to check his rear end, anus glands, there is something at times you might need to do, called expressing his glands, talk to your vet about this too. Teeth and mouth: get your baby used to having his teeth looked at and touched. you can use your baby finger to just glide along his teeth for now. Look at the color of his gums, should be nice and pink and moist. And Welcome to YT |
Welcome to YT Patches & Winnie |
Welcome to YT! As everyone else has already said, sounds like you have a pretty good grasp on everything which is great!! Congrats on your new baby :) With the blow drying situation, I have the same problem with my pup so I bought a pet blow dryer that is hands free so I can keep him held in his towel and warm while still blow drying him. Its still a process haha but each time I do it he seems to get more comfortable. How's the potty training coming along?? That is another process in and of itself haha :p |
Thanks!!!! 1 Attachment(s) Thank you all for the warm welcome! I really appreciate all the advice and words of encouragement! Attachment 322704 Lots of you asked about Potty training. Potty training is actually going ok. He is a boy, so he does occasionally make little pees around the house if we play w/ him too long, but when he's in his room (the bathroom - we have a nice step over gate so we can keep an eye on him) he goes on the puppy pad EVERY TIME! He does really really good! He also recently started to "sit" and "fetch" pretty good, which is exciting! Oh...and this is a little TMI, but I've noticed that when giving Bazinga a bath sometimes he has a little piece of poopy stuck in his hair on his booty. Ofc, I soak it and get it out, but does anyone else have this issue? Liz821 - I just moved to GA from OH in May and am living in Alpharetta. That's cool that we live in the same town. We should get our little ones together for a play date at a park or something one time, after Bazinga finishes up his shots...I think he still has a few rounds to go. :) I heard that feeding canned food can be "addicting" so that's why I hadn't been feeding canned. I tried putting some dry food in his bowl last night, but he can't seem to keep it in his mouth. he just drops it while he tries to bite it... Rhetts_mama - Also awesome that you live in Cumming. We should get our little ones together for a play date at a park or even at the lake out that way sometime. Bazinga's not totally done w/ his shots just yet though. And how totally neat is it that they share the same birthday! I love it!!!! haha. I think you're right about the steam mop...that may just be the way to go. I just don't feel right about using chemicals I don't know are safe for him on the floor (especially b/c of how short he is) but at the same time I don't see how that Paw Friendly stuff can kill any germs....do you recommend a brand? gemy - thank you for the ear cleaning tips. My husband said he noticed that they smell a little, so I'm guessing I need to keep a better eye on them. Is it safe to use puppy wipes inside the ear??? Seems like the easiest way to me... Thank you all again for this...I feel so welcome!!! :) |

I would love to get the babies together once Bazinga is in the clear with his shots! My two just finished up their shots today so they are free to play and socialize with other dogs! Yay! Yes, it's common for them to get a little bit of poop stuck to their fur in the back. The best remedy I know of (again, not an expert) is to keep the fur trimmed around their bottom. Otherwise, just resign yourself to the fact that they have to have the occasional "butt bath" as it is lovingly referred to in my house.;) Sorry about the kibble issue. Maybe when he gets a bit bigger you can try again. Do you know how big he is supposed to get? How big were mom and dad? My 2 are right around 4# and they are 16 weeks old. Mom was around 7 lbs. and dad was 4lbs. something, so I'm guessing they will be around 6 or 7 lbs. when they are full grown. You are way ahead of me on the house breaking...we are trying to teach our two to go in the yard, which at this stage requires lots of supervision and waiting for them to decide to potty. Sometimes we just give up and go back in the house then one of them decides to go within 5 minutes! I guess it will just take awhile considering there are two of them and we've only had them for two weeks! |

Potty Training - Well apparently I bragged on Bazinga a little too early. He used the bathroom tonight on the rug, but I'm sure my husband wasn't watching him like he should have been. I mean, he's still just a little puppy so I'm sure these accidents will continue to happen for a little bit. I am proud of him for how good he does most of the time, though. I've NEVER potty trained anything before so this should be interesting when we start trying to outside potty train him! Haha. Shots - Bazinga has had 2 of his distemper shots, and I'm not sure how many more he's supposed to get. I know he's got a couple more weeks before he can get his next one. I think being around other dogs will be REALLY good for him, so I'll definitely keep you posted on that. I plan on putting him through a puppy class w/ my vet this fall when they start the next round. :) |

I use an ear cleaner made for dogs. There are several brands you can get in the pet store. Good nose on Daddy, I forgot to mention that can be one of the first things you notice, a "smell". Here's the thing you need to clean inside of the ear canal and not just the upper inside ear. I use a flat cosmetic pad to clear the upper inner ear. I do use Q tips for the ear canal, but if you aren't sure about those, you can use a cotton ball and dose it with the ear solution, make it smaller by twisting it, and with a curving motion clean ear canal. You can have vet show you just how deep you can go. The Butt stuff: :D Quite normal to find especially in a puppy some er evidence of potty. I do do what you do, soak it, remove it, and wash really throughly. Also it does get better honestly. You will learn how to trim hairs around anus, and if you keep your dog clipped short, you won't have a problem very often as he matures. |
