I take Mia in everywhere to be honest. But she is in one of her carriers. She is very quiet as long as you don't set the bag on the ground. You can ask my hubby about that one. He learned that a 2# yorkie can scream loud enough to get the attention of an entire grocery store. But I have not sinned in that way. Mia loves going to Wal Mart, and is welcomed in many of the stores we frequent for tack. If they ask what is in the bag I tell them, if not they will never know. Olive Garden is one of her favorite establishments...

I'm always hugging and kissing my pups so I don't take them so they can get some rest from ME!

Restaurants and grocery stores are a big no-no, IMO. But we've gone to Home Depot, Lowes, Joanne's, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Best Buy and the Mall of Georgia as well as Northpoint. We've also hit the outdoor outlet centers and The Avenues. We did have lunch at a Chik-Fil-A, but I snuck on to the patio while my husband went in to order. I felt horribly guilty the whole time because I know that not everyone feels comfortable with dogs around food, but the manager came up to us and pet Rhett.

I am kind of sad that there aren't as many dog-friendly places around here as there were in San Diego.

I take Thor with me pretty everywhere. I even take him into Whole Foods in a discreet carrier.

HOWEVER, a few weeks ago, I walked Thor into the neighborhood deli where he's been a million times, and he pooped on the floor. It was a neat, fast poop, so I was able to pick it up immediately with no one noticing, but still - mortifying. So now I make sure he's in a carrier when I take him inside.

Uni's getting really good at dining al fresco :D When she was a puppy we took her to restaurants too. We'd sneak her in my bag and put a hoodie over her and she would just sleep. This was before she knew about people food. Our friend owns a pho restaurant so he didn't mind her there. Chick-fil-a doesn't mind either, at least when she was a pup. Haven't brought her inside since then. But they did offer her a dog biscuit.

I saw the other day a woman walk into CVS with her medium sized dog on a leash, and I didn't see her walk out immediately so I assume it is ok to bring dogs there.

Also I heard that Ross allows them too. Home depot around here now have signs (big ones) that say no pets. I have brought her in the garden center before, and a few times inside, but that was also a while ago. Now I hear Lowes still allows it.

007 Yorkie

I was very skeptical at first, but I'm finding that many non-food places will allow doggies inside. Old Navy, Macy's (saw a lady WALKING HER DOG inside), Marshalls/TJ Maxx & the more upscale mall are all a green light. I do usually either carry her or put her in a purse. I've brought her into some small shops and people have been sooo loving. I've also had the misfortune of buying 2 cars within the last month or so and Kasha has been to every dealership in South Florida without complaint & always leaves with a kiss or two.

The Places Only 007 Should Attempt:
- Starbucks is a nono( unless it's a drive thru)
- Food places even w/ outdoor seating are touch and go
- I've run into Publix & Whole Foods for one item :-( with her carefully hidden

Yorkies are so small and cute ... as long as you find a dog lover most people seem to be more than happy to pet & share doggy stories with me.

Mia is never out of her carrier in grocery or eating establishments. Mia is so quiet most never know and the carriers we have to match our clothes make it even more discreet. I understand about not wanting animals into food but most places are more than happy to see us walk in, we spend money! We also have a pretty stoller that we take her in. One of the ladies we see at puppy play also takes her beloved babies out in carriers or strollers. Not many pet friendly posted places here in Omaha but someone needs to help change the tide..... I guess I come from a different perspective on this. I worked in a grocery store and in restaurant when I was younger. Admittedly, this was a long time ago and in California which regulates everything to the Nth degree! Any hoo, the owners of both places had very, very strict health codes they had to follow. And no animals other than service animals was one of them. Looking the other way on something could cost them a huge amount of money in fines, and even get the establishments closed if they incurred too many infractions.

The worst that will happen to me is I might get asked to leave. But I wouldn't want my feeling above the rules to get someone else in trouble.

Rhett's Mama, please tell me you are on Peachtree street! And is there ever going to be a Melanie, Ashly and yes Tara in the family? My Westies were all named for GWTW. I have Margaret Mitchell's scrapbook (big fan)

Rhetts_mama 07-12-2010 04:14 PM

Not on Peachtree St. But there is neighborhood nearby called Twelve Oaks :) And I do fully expect that some day we will add a Bonnie Blue or Tara to our mix.

Holly goes everywhere with us except grocery stores and restaurants. She is always in my lap or in her carrier, and we never let her walk in the stores. Ross has turned us away a few times, but other than that everyone loves her!

Too funny! I personally don’t see any issue at all, if you keep your little guy in its carrier. But if The Man were to catch you, you'd be taking your never ending salad and bread sticks with you in a doggy (Yorkie) bag:D

This reminds me of a HS friend of mine who was rarely gainfully employed, and seemed happiest that way. Anyway, I once took him out to my favorite Pizza place, and he brought his pet rat with him in his jacket pocket. Of course I did not realize his rat was with him until he picked off a ball of mozzarella and fed it to him, sticking his little rat head out of the pocket. I really would not recommend you try this at home, kids. Good thing about rats though is they make a lot less noise than a Yorkie. Of course if anyone had tried to sneak a yorkie in there and it were to "smell a rat", it would have made for interesting dinner conversation.

Same here. Most places don't mind as long as they're not wandering all over the store. I have taken Kaji into Home Depot, when my dad runs his work errands. I've seen people walking through the store with their English bull dogs, so I assumed it was ok and we've gone in their many many times. Turns out, the official store policy is no dogs, but the employees don't care and never said anything. They come pet him and let me be.
I was just introduced to the Lazy Dog Cafe. Had a great meal in the outside eating area with other humans and dogs. Even a black lab sat with us, it was great!

I guess next time my dad goes to Home Depot Miloh and I will go along as well. Lol By the way, where's the Lazy Dog Cafe?

At the whole foods near my house, I have seen yorkies openly carried in a little dog carrier, the kind you wear. There appeared to be no issues, but I did not ask...

Just this last weekend, my GF wanted to go to an outlet mall in Leesburg VA, after the NOVA Yorkie meet-up and I was sure she was asking for trouble. It is a plaza style mall with lots of storefronts with shady overhangs. We had the only dogs in site, and I was getting an increasing feeling of dread. But amazingly enough, we passed a maintenance worker who said nothing about the Yorkies. And so we took our chances and walked right into Restoration Hardware each carrying a Yorkie. SO far so good, but I was waiting for the inevitable. When a worker approached I was so sure we were doomed, I was all set to surrender to this stupid convention; but no need, he only wanted to know if I needed some help!

So another small victory for responsible people and their pets. Have to say though, I really felt self-conscious with Mr. Gatsby sitting (he likes to sit, not lay down) on my forearm walking around that place. All of the families in there and me and the GF each with a Yorkie on the forearm... Almost makes me want to get a stroller
