Fabric vs Leather Couch? Just wondering what you have or what you like better? We are trying to decide what to get when we replace our current fabric couch. We are worried about scratching as our dogs are allowed on the furniture, but would love the no smell that fabric likes to hold onto....... |
Dogs = leather. We've had leather for years...no smells, easy to clean, doesn't scratch, toenails don't go through...love it! |
Bump. I'd like to see what others say. I've had leather seats in one of my cars. I hate how sticky they get when it's warm. Do leather couches do the same thing? |

Oh you are making me super excited!! We looked at furniture tonight and LOVED the leather, but I was a bit worried that it might scratch....my husband will be soo happy with your review :) |
We have leather too. No scratches on ours either. Mine is black if it makes a difference. I plan to stick with the leather having 3 dogs and 2 kids it just cleans up nicely and makes my life easier. |
Leather here also. The cats have put a few marks on it but the dogs don't. |
stupid question. Almost 40yrs ago I had a beautiful leather easy chair. It wasn't very old when it began to crack etc... Back then it seems that leather needed to be continually treated, kept lubricated etc... Does leather still have to specially treated? |
Love my leather couch. I have a yellow lab and she sheds like crazy...it's nice to be able to just use a swiffer duster on the couch and be rid of the dog hair....the old fabric couch was a mess because she would jump up on it and sleep at night and her coarse little hairs would weave themselves INTO the fabric, so the lint roller and vacuum wouldn't work. Also, if you get a softer, distressed looking leather, you won't stick to it...just the smooth shiny kind of leather. |

Just bought a microfiber sectional and I wish I would have gone with LEATHER!:thumbup: :) |
Is leather more expensive? If things work out well for us, Kaji and I will be moving into a house by the end of the year. I want to foster, so the easy cleaning of leather is appealing. BUT, I have to honestly say, I'm not a huge fan of how leather feels. Are there no pros to fabric couches? I was thinking washable sofa covers. Maybe? |
Yea leather is more expensive but I do think it lasts longer and is way easier to keep clean and not smelly. My Mom has had her leather living room set for over 10 yrs and it looks fabulous. It came from Lazyboy. You can always throw something on a leather couch if you don't like the feel of it but not with the microfiber one I just got. Like I said, wish I would have put the money into the leather. I will next time. And I have noticed when people post pictures here - a lot of them have leather. |
I LOVE leather; have one leather sectional in the living room and another in the family room. Perfect for dogs. Keep pets nails trimmed & filed and scratching won't be a problem. There are different grades of leather, but all are better than fabric and so easy to clean. |
I would say that leather is more practical because it's easer to clean, but I prefer fabric for comfort :) |
I have fabric in the living room and a denim couch in my back room. |
I've only had leather couches for the past 10 or 15 years...Also have leather seats in my car...I find it cool in the summer, and warm in the winter...You can always clean up the occasional throw up, muddy feet, or even little blood spots...I highly recommend leather!!! |
Leather all the way for me. Doggy odors (and hair, if you have a heavily shedding breed) get stuck in fabric and are time-consuming to get rid of. As long as you keep your dog's nails trimmed then scratches shouldn't be a problem. If your house stays relatively cool then sticky leather shouldn't be a problem. I love big comfy leather couches (like they have at Starbucks), I could lounge on one all day! If you do get a fabric couch I would recommend getting covers because then it makes it a lot easier to clean up. The downside for me with that is more laundry (ugh) and I generally don't like the look of couch covers. |

Leather 1 Attachment(s) Our cream colored leather sofa and loveseat are about 10 years old and the favorite resting spot for our elderly Boxer, Boo as well as the Yorkies. With the exception of a few scratches - silly Boo - they are in great shape. They are very easy to clean (use Murphy's Oil Soap and a sponge). There are different grades of leather and before I purchased one, I'd do some research, request to see a swatch of the leather that the manufacturer uses (aka color swatches) and purchase the best quality (not necessarily the most expensive) leather that you can afford. Below is a picture of a "drawing" that my Chattie did several years ago. I call it Blue Ink Sketch on Leather Couch Canvas". The ink was a challenge to get out but with diligent scrubbing and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser it came completely out. If it had just been me I would have left her drawing in place  but hubby found it distasteful. |
Wow I am not even in the market for new furniture but after this thread when I am I plan on getting leather. Thanks gals . |
We bought new living room furniture this year..I liked the look of leather, but was worried about the scratches. The salesman said as long as you go with "top grain" leather, it will not scratch. he even demonstrated by letting me scratch a sofa :p. Due to cost, we compromised and bought a microfiber couch and love seat & a leather Lazyboy recliner. I like the microfiber because spills seem to "pool" on the fabric and it is super easy to wipe down. I love the look of my leather chair, it is not styled like a recliner, and it adds a bit of luxury to the room. We've had it for about 4 months and it is a favorite of Cooper's, and no scratches to date! |
We have had leather couches for twelve years and it is just starting to wear BETWEEN the cushions- I didn't know much at the time but ALL leather is way better than "leather where the body touches". The tip about checking a sample for scratching is great. I've read that "bonded" leather is not that good... We got a darker color than I wanted but with 3 kids and two dogs I can't complain. If your furniture is going to recline I would look for a well known brand so your "mechinisms" don't break and the furniture stays sturdy.Leather is a little cool in winter but I just throw a blanket down for me and Ziva. |
I've got leather and I don't think I'll ever go back to fabric. |
Leather here also - 3 cats and 1 Yorkie (for now), and 1 grandson....will never go back to fabric. I have a small blanket/light comforter that I sometimes put on the seat just to be extra safe at times. |
Leather it is then!!! :) YEAH!! :) I will make sure no bonded and leather all the way. Found one at Art Van we adored but didnt come in the color we wanted. Still looking :) |
I have leather in the formal living room and microfiber in the family room. I actually like both to tell you the truth. The leather doesnt scratch at all...Pasquale sits on it to look out the bay window EVERY day. If you do get the microfiber i would recommend getting the pre-treatment that they offer. It makes EVERYTHING really easy to clean! I guess it just depends on what you really want. |
I've had leather couches since I moved out of my parents house, and I love them! They are comfy, easy to clean, and long-lasting. Roxie is allowed on the furniture and she hasn't scratched or torn the leather yet. I will never go back to fabric couches! |

We have a suede sectional that I purchased only 3 years ago. I hate to say it but it is pretty much RUINED! Having kids and dogs on it, it is so hard to clean. I had even purchased the special stuff they put on to help with stains which it never did. My ottoman is totally ruined, I have tried steaming and washing and none of the stains will come out. My couch I take the cushion covers off and wash them but still it's horrible. I hate fabric!! I've bee ntrying to convince hubby to get a new leather couch but he thought the dogs would ruin it too! I am showing him this thread because I want a new couch! :p |
