she's 9 wks old and won't eat or drink,HELP
 

I have had her for 1 week and she's 9 weeks old. She just curls up in a ball and sleeps. She won't eat or drink. I have to force everything down her. What do I do??? This is my 1st one and I'm getting scared.

Have you asked the breeder about her personality? You could also try adding in some sugar to her water and seeing if she will drink it then.

Please take her to the vet!!

These threads just break my heart!! :( First and importantly call your vet. If after hours please go to the emergency vet. Your baby will get dehydrated and compound further complications.

Try Gerber babyfood chicken sticks, macaroni, rice, plain yogurt, ANYTHING not too spicy.

I am trying the sugar water, but I have to put it in a syringe and force feed her. I am also trying Nutri-cal. I have put all kinds of food before her and nothing. I have taken her to the vet, he said to try all of the foods you all have mentioned. I am taking her back out tomorrow. I have even put food mashed and mixed with water in a syringe and force fed her, but she just vomited it back up. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know what the vet says.

I remember my breeder telling me about yorkie pups is that the hardest thing is to get them to eat right. That's what the breeder is supposed to be doing during those 8 weeks before you got the pup is to train them to eat three meals a day before it leaves the breeder. So, you might want to check with your breeder or bring your pup to the vet. Update us on how she's doing! I hope she'll be okay.

It sounds like you are doing what you can and that is great!! Being that she is so young and I am sure very tiny, she can crash very easily. I am in no way trying to cause you to panic...Just keep her warm and notify your emergency vet tonight for other options. Your pup might need to go to the vet tonight for further treatment. Tomorrow is many hours away.

When she sleeps , she curls up into a ball position. Does this mean anything?? Tummy ache, maybe??

Have you try giving him some Nutrical or Nutripet .

No, this is a normal sleeping position. She might be chilled though. I have found that a heating pad set on a low setting covered in a couple towels helps keep them warm, you can try this if you'd like.

From what I've seen the ball position is normal for both dogs and cats. My puppy slept curled up when I got her at 8 weeks and now at almost 12 she sleeps in a lot of different positions. Maybe it's a throwback to the womb? It took Sheila a while to adjust and she barely ate when I got her and now 3 weeks later she's a little piggy. Your baby may just be missing his litter mates and mom. I took Sheila to the vet after her third day because she wouldn't poop because it was sticking to her fur. The vet took care of it for free and sent her a card to my work. Please take your little baby to the vet, yorkie pups are too small and dehydrate easily and have little fat reserve. I've seen a few pups that have had to be bottle/dropper fed to keep them nourished. The vet can re-hydrate your baby and tell you how to take care of him. Your yorkie needs to go to the vet immediately. Pups cannot last long without water or food. The yorkie will dehydrate and the insulin level will go down. I do not mean to alarm you but I went thru the exact same situation many years ago and the outcome was not good. And, don't accept an explanation of the yorkie being nervous because it is in a new environment. I was told that by the vet and that was not the case. My thoughts are with you and your new yorkie. Please let us know the outcome.

Hi, I am new to Yorkie talk and a new Yorkie owner. My little girl, Tinkerbelle, is also 9 weeks old (dob 12/22/04) and she wouldn't eat either. This past weekend, she got really sick with diahhrea. I took her to the vet Sat. morning and they thought she had parvo. She actually had coccidia. They gave her Albon and baby food. She lost 8 oz and is down to 1 lb 7 oz. Now she doesn't want to eat baby food. So what I have found that she will eat is boiled chicken breast with the broth poured over it. They breeder told me that it won't hurt her. She even suggested plain yogurt, pedialyte, bananas, cooked carrots. I haven't tried those yet, but right now the chicken breast seems to be working. I am also giving her nutristat once a day before I go to work, just to be safe. Mine sleeps quite a bit also. I wonder if it is because she is still so young. I hope my suggestions help you and I would love some Yorkie raising advice my self. This little girl has stolen our hearts and taken over our house. She sleeps in our bed and doesn't like to be alone at all. I don't want to make her rotten, but I want her to feel safe in her new home. I know it has been stressful on her, new home, 3 children, and a new sickness.

newyorkiemom: Welcome to the community! Make sure the broth you give her is not too salty (I think it's best if it's flavorless), but chicken breast is fine. You can also put some sugar in her water too to make her drink water. Hope Tinkerbelle gets stronger soon! :)
