My sister-in-law thinks I have lost my mind :0 Ok, we are going on vacation on July 23 and were thinking of going to Hilton Head Island.. I love the beaches and it looks so fun. Well I go to reserve a villa or condo and see they do NOT allow dogs to stay on the island between may 31th - labor day... i was so mad because I'm not leaving Izzy for 10 days while i go on vacation if I can help it. She's like my baby. So I talk to my husband and kids and they said to forget hilton head :D. I was so happy they agreed with me. I tell my sister in law and she goes on to tell me that this dog is not a child, it's a dog and that i should broad her since my mom can only handle the other 2 dogs . ( izzy is still be small for my mom lol) I think i was about to come through the phone. I was so mad..:thumbdown All I can say that my dogs are part of our familyand I would never broad them. No offence to people that do, but I want to know how they are being treated at all time :) and that they are having fun. Now we are going in the 5th wheel and touring the upper part og Michigan and going to Macinaw Island instead. the kids say this will be more fun..lol and I get to bring Isabella :aimeeyork :) |
I agree with you. If the whole family can't go including the furbutts, I wouldn't go either. |
I bring Jackson with me when I can, but I'm lucky to have parents who will watch him. My dad and his wife have a huge fenced in yard and he gets spoiled over there so I've left him there numerous times if I'm gone on vacation, or even just gone for a full day and know he's being taken care of. I wouldn't board him, I don't think he'd handle it well. He loves other dogs to pieces but he's never been caged and he's really shy with strangers, I wouldn't have the heart to leave him so I don't blame you! PS- Hilton Head is gorgeous! |
I'm with you...take the babies... head to Mackinaw!! It's beautiful, the state parks are nice up there...and you get to have your whole family all together. I think you made the right choice! *hope it is warm enough though* :) |
You found a solution that makes you happy, your husband happy and your kids (skin and furbutt) happy. Who cares what your SIL thinks?! |
Thanks everyone, I guess I just needed to hear that...And i don't really care what my S.I.L said..I was just explaining to her plans have changed...There are many thing she does that I wouldn't BUT I'm still happy for her becuase it make her happy..Thats what counts :) I expect other people to feel the same way..Oh well.. lol Yes, I know we'll have a good time in the U.P and Macinaw. I'm going to get Izzy a stroller cuz that will just be easier for her..Her tiny leg can't go all day like we can. :) We are going to Hilton Head in Oct for a long weekend when Izzy can come  |
Hey there........Im in Michigan as well. The lower half. We are actually going to Mackinaw City and the Island this coming weekend :). The UP is such a great place to vacation in the summer! Glad you were able to compromise and still be happy with your vacation. To bad your SIL has never experienced the bonding of a four legged family member. I feel sorry for her :( |
I was just checking on a cabin in a State park for my husband and I to go to for a few days to relax. As I was reading about the area and ect. it stated NO PETS. When I read this to my husband he said, "Forget that, if the babies don`t go we don`t go." We never leave Tucker and Izzy behind. |

I agree, whenever Sophie Kate can come she does. I will not say I have never boarded her because I have but only with my Vet whom I trust 100%. You will enjoy the U.P. and Mackinaw/Mackinac - beautiful areas to visit. |
I don't know why it's so hard for some people to understand that our furbabies are our real babies too. My boyfriend and I went to Las Vegas last month so we left Holly with my cousin, and I had soooo much anxiety about leaving her. My cousin took her to her boyfriends house one night, which I had no problem with because they both love her, but she took Holly's crate and put Holly in it at night for bedtime, and Holly wouldn't stop crying. Well Holly sleeps with us every night and is rarely put in her crate. Sometimes for a few hours during the day while I'm getting ready so she won't be in the way, but she's never slept in it for a full night. When Holly is tired she'll just find somewhere to lay and stay there for the rest of the night. When we came home she told me that I need to train her to sleep in her crate at night! She is a very well behaved dog, and my cousin has always known that she sleeps with us and never in the crate, so I don't know why she had to put her to bed in the crate at night. Needless to say, no one takes care of our babies or understands them the way we do! |
whatever!! I took Paddington on my honeymoon!! Granted it was only two nights in a swanky manhattan hotel b/c i didn't have time for a trip but still...he would have come no matter what. Someone told me that I had no life b/c my dog was a big focus on it, at first I got annoyed but then I realized I have a life and its actually WAY better than hers no matter what she says. Some people just don't GET it. |
I totally agree with you and my family also thinks I'm crazy when it come to my furbutts. I take them on vacation with us as much as I can and always searching for pet friendly places. One of our favorite vacations is visiting the Outer Banks, NC. They have pet friendly rentals and allow dogs on the southern beaches and we can drive there. It's a great place for a family vacation! |
Yep, I forgo vacations now and haven't had one in at least 4 years. There is only 1 person I would 100% trust to watch them, but now that I have 3 that is just too any and too much to ask. And mine ARE my babies, and I have a skin kid too. I also think it's different when people have larger dogs and don't understand. Our little ones cannot take care of themselves as a larger dog could. They are little, underfoot, can get into trouble if not being watched, really good escape artists. They depend on us for their safety and care, just as a child would. |
Our problem is two fold. First of all we don't have anyone we trust to watch them. My mom lives nearby but she is far to old to watch little active dogs like mine In the second place if I did find a reputable person to board them, the cost would be out of site! Like $100.00 a day! Therefore.....we only go where we can take them with us. We have taken them on 3600 mile car trip before and loved it all. They were great and half of our fun. We definitely need to find someone that we could use in an absolute emergency at some point because you never know when something might happen. |
I agree with you so I guess I am nuts. If I can't have my fur kids than forget it!! Unless I can have a family member stay at the house with them but I would miss them 10 days is a long time. I feel guilty for 2 hrs!! lol |
I used to never travel w/o my babies - but recently a death in the family sort of shocked us into the reality that we would have to board them. We decided the vet was the safest option for us and it went ok. I was really nervous, but they did great! We have decided to take short day or two trips here and there to board them so they get more used to it. I think it's great your family besides your SIL was supportive though. They're your babies and whatever you feel is right as far as travel arrangements are your families business and that's it :). |
Great story! I think you'll all have more fun doing that, too!:D |

Well buy the movie RV and watch on vacation...lol |
We have never left the girls either. Even when we spent lots of time in hotels and had to go to the dining room to eat while leaving them in the room, it drove me crazy. This is the very reason we bought a motor home. The girls just LOVE it. Each time I go outside with them, they run to the mh and want in. They are always ready in a split second and it's so cute. Don't get too angry with your SIL. Just feel sorry for her that she isn't as happy as you are. ;) |
I take Gatsby everywhere with me but i don't travel because he gets sick in cars. but at the same time i know that if i really needed him to stay behind for a few days i would have people that i know and trust lining up to take him |

I feel sad for your sister in law, since she aparently doesn't know the love between a dog and his/her owner. Boo boo IS my child, and I would never leave him behind so I can go have a good time. It wouldn't be a good time! I had to leave him once for a week (with his dog-mom's owner) and I spent the entire time worrying about him. Wondering if he was being snuggled enough, worrying that he wouldn't be able to sleep without me in the bed (he has to be snuggled right up to me). By the time i got home I felt so bad for leaving him, and he was just super excited to see me. I feel like when I leave him he doesn't understand that I will come back and he thinks I"m abandoning him. Taking your dog with you to Mackinaw is a great idea! I live here in Mackinaw and it is very dog friendly. Everyone up here has at least one dog, and they all love little dogs! Just be prepared for people wanting to pet your dog...I can't take boo anywhere without someone wanting to pet him and snuggle him!! However, if you go to one of the state historic parks, beware...they won't let you bring the dog in. Most of the stores in mackinaw city are fine with dogs, there is even a pretty cute pet store in the mackinaw crossings with all kinds of adorable toys and clothes and collars....Boo loves going there!! I hope you have a great trip, and don't let what your sister in law said bother you too much. Some people just don't understand that little dogs like yorkies have ways of worming into your heart and taking over. |

My whole family is totally non supportive of taking mabel on trips! I love to have her along. She's quite well behaved and is crate trained so we can still do stuff while she's crated at the hotel. Lucky for Mabel my aunt and uncle will keep her(she has a good time with their dogs(poodle & jack russel) My mother who always goes on trips with us is adamant about not taking Mabel along...this is baffeling since she used to take her poodle(vicious little animal)Nicki everywhere we went when i was a kid!! Go figure! |
St Simons Island, GA is about 3 hours south of Hilton Head and VERY dog friendly. One beach limits the area dogs can be since it is SO crowded during summer, but otherwise it is great! We have a really nice dog park and many dog friendly restaurants! Jekyll Island, GA is also great, I live in Brunswick (mainland) and we travel to SSI with Claire weekly!!:aimeeyork |
Your right! If I could take Poppy on Holiday with me too I would :) |
