Oh The Thunder!
 
Cooper is an emotional dog and has a couple of fears that revolve round loud noises. The thunder terrifies him :( He finds a corner in any room of the house and just sits up against a wall or door and shakes. He doesn't really want to be held by me. I try to occupy him with a bone, treat or his ball but he really wants nothing to do with anything. He doesn't have a crate or kennel that he likes to go to. Once the thunder is done, he's back to normal.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can comfort him or what I should do?

It just started raining.

:) hiya , poppy is not afraid of the thunder :) but last week we was looking after my mum in laws lhasa apso and she is terrified of the thunder , we just cuddled her and comforted her until it passed over ;) hope this helps , love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork

How about some special treats that only come out when there is thunder? (kong with peanut butter, bully stick...) Music always worked with my grandmother's dog during storms. If all else fails, there's lots of holistic treatments to give the dog preventatively when you know there is a storm coming.

Callie is really only afraid of bad thunder little thunder doesnt really bother her. Just holding her dosent work tho what I have found works is to wrap her tight in a towel and hold her to me and she calms. My Teddy is fearless, except when it comes to thunderstorms. We had a big one recently and now he is afraid of the dark. He is such a sweetheart and it makes me so sad to see him shake or to see him nervous at night.

I'm going to try the towel wrap suggested above during our next storm. The pup tent and covered crate have helped ease Teddy's anxiety at night, although he would prefer that I leave on all the lights.

Awww...poor, poor baby :(. This may sound crazy, but we had a dog when I was young that was so afraid of thunder, she once ran out of the house and over to the neighbors and ran clear through their screen door and hid under their dining table! She was always afraid of bad thunder storms, but with a mild one, we would get out a blanket for her and she would tunnel under it and stay there (whining) until the storm passed.

What kind of dog was it? I shouldn't laugh because the dog was scared, but that is a funny story.

My boys' favorite resting area is under my kitchen table. That is where their beds are. They also like the dining room set. It makes a nice hangout and agility course. :D

Morgan is the exact same way as Cooper. Terrified of thunder and loud noises (bangs, high pitch sounds, and odd random noises). This all started shortly after she turned 2. she's 4 now and nothing i've tried has worked yet.

I just bought a Thunder wrap and have been putting it on her the past few times she's been scared of something. I think it is helping a little because she calms down faster. I haven't been able to test it on a really loud thunderstorm yet but i'll let you know how that goes.

Try different shirts on him, some are sensitive to the static electricity in the air common during a storm. I use a fleece nightie on my Tink and if anything, she gets warm and sleepy! She's usually kind of hyper anyway so this does help.

Try the doggy shirt thing with him... it may help. You may see improvement the first time, and each consecutive time it should continue to improve. Would a small nightlight work for him? Enough for him to see but not blaring to the eye... a relaxing light!

Wow thanks for all the great ideas. If i knew how to multi quote, i would comment on everyone's comments. oh and yes, that story is sad yet so funny!

Cooper is also afraid of the lawnmower. Believe it or not he's also afraid when my partner and I have an argument. Fights are rare and hardly ever get louder than a regular voice but somehow Cooper knows when we have a serious talk! He under a table or sits in a corner shaking. Then i always hear "look what you did to the dog!" LOL. It usually ends the fight with us trying to tell Cooper everything is ok :rolleyes:

well that is one way to solve arguments i guess my puppies are terrified of the rain it is very loud on our roof and we live in a single level ranch so no attic when i know its going to storm i have to call over my ex boyfriend and we all have sit in the liveing room with the doors closed and the curtains open if the ex is not thear it dose not work the run around barking and crying and howling same thing if the kids are at school or im gone or if one of the other dogs are not in the room its like they are terrified the rain will eat us if we are not in the liveing room i cant explain this this is the first bad weather they have had and they run to the liveing room and bark until we come in

Aww poor baby, Phoebe freak out with fire works, so I just put the tv or music and usually help her, I try to cover her ears:rolleyes: and holder close to me, sorry I couldn't be more help

The poor little guy! Not so much that he's afraid of thunder but because you can't comfort him :( We had our first storm the other night, and it was really bad. Charlie was pretty anxious. I brought him in bed with me (as well as the 11 and 12 year olds who were also scared.) Once he was on the bed cuddled up with one of us he was fine. (And the storm lasted a long time.)

Swaddling him in a towel sounds like a good idea. I had a really colicky baby (not regular colic, EXTREME colic,) and swaddling used to help..

Well, today's rain didn't bring thunder but there are storms scheduled all this week. I'll have to do the blanket/shirt thing as I'll be unable to purchase any calming solution immediately. Hopefully that will work. So basically I'm going to dress him, hold him, put soft music on and hold his ears....
