Please do not breed your baby. The decision of whether or not to spay is yours (or your mom's), but like others have said, your puppy is from a mill and therefore you know absolutely nothing about her genes or her background. Puppies from mills almost always have issues whether it be psychological or physical. A good breeder cares about the puppies and where they go. They would NEVER sell a puppy to a store where they have no say or even any idea as to where that puppy is going to go and how he/she will be treated. You do not want to risk creating more puppies that come from this type of environment.

A good breeder breeds for the breed of the dog; to promote the right features, good temperment, and happy, healthy puppies. They do it for the love of the breed not simply for fun or for money like the mills and other backyard breeders.

There are plenty of things you are going to continue to worry about and tough decisions you will have to make throughout your "mommyhood". In your heart, you know what is best for your baby and what she can or can't handle. I aplaud you for doing your research and encourage you to continue to do so as well as talk with your vet. In doing so, you and your mother can make an informed decision.

I too had issues deciding whether or not to spay. I went into it knowing I wanted to have her spayed as not to contribute to the overpopulation in shelters, but when I was holding her I didn't know if I could put her through it. All kinds of thoughts ran through my mind including that the universe would punish me in an equal way for taking away her reproductive capability.

All I had to do is see a picture of a dog with mammory cancer and I pushed through it. Spaying adds years to a dog's life, saves time and money (in the end), and best of all...keeps them in a prolonged puppy state for life! If you get her spayed now she will always have the personality she does now, if you let her go into heat especially more than twice, she may become less friendly and playful and may even become mean at times. If you breed her, she may become very mean at times, no matter how much she loves you.

Good luck with your decision, I hope it works out for you. And remember, your dog can tell you what to do. Look into her eyes and you'll probably get an idea of what is best for her.

Shes not form a mill, there 100% not for them, she came form a breeder and we even got papers form the breeder with her name and address.

If you got her from a pet store, there is almost a 100% chance that she came from a puppy mill. And, the papers from ALL puppy mill puppies will have papers with the name of a breeder and include an address. That person named is the puppy mill owner and the address of the mill. I bet if you search on the USDA dog breeders list (where puppy mills have to be registered for regulation and inspection, just as if they are raising cattle), you will find that name and address.

Im not sure where we would get the male, im sure my mom would just post an ad some where, which is complety un-safe. I never talked to her about the male part, so really im not sure, just assuming. I just care about her, and her health. Im don't think she will grow anymore, shes already 6 months old. How old do they have to be to breed?

EDIT- She came form a breeder in MO

I hope you read this and try to accept it, I'm not trying to be mean but, want you to know the truth.

Puppies from Missouri, sold in petstores are puppymill dogs. The breeders either sell through a broker service or, anymore will sell directly to pet stores. Yes, you may have the breeders name on paperwork but I can guarantee you the breeder operates what is known as a puppymill.

Missouri has more puppymills than any other state. My state, Oklahoma is probably 2nd or 3rd in the number of puppymills. They don't openly call themselves puppymills, bc then most people would not buy the dogs.

If you have any doubts about what I'm telling you, either post the name of the breeder listed on the papers or you can private message a member here with the name. The name will show up on some website and then with research you can find out for certain what I'm telling you is true.

Dogs purchased through a petstore should not be bred. Most likely they will have health concerns that although may not affect them, could show up and affect their puppies.

Hopefully you all will decide not to breed your new puppy, and will enjoy her for the pet she should be.

She is 100% correct in what she is saying about pet shop puppies and puppy mills. You would not be the first person to come to YT with all of the questions that you have presented and learned that your puppy was born in a puppy mill. Actually I would say that a large percentage of members have also learned this same lesson.

There is going to be a special all about puppy mills on Animal Planet
Animal Planet :: TV Listings :: Animal Planet Investigates: Petland
Here is a great site that you can learn even more about puppy mills:
Puppymills - information on puppymills and what you can do to stop them.

When you go to the site they make a big deal about saying they don't support puppy mills which is a red flag as it is. Then, in their explanation about not supporting mills, they state USDA Approved Kennels Only; USDA Approved = Puppymill.

It is sad that it can be difficult to find a reputable breeder. So many puppies come from mills and backyard breeders. I came to this site hoping to get advise on finding a good one. Just because a puppy is from a mill does not mean he/she should be loved any less. It is not their fault they were born into such an environment. You live, you learn. When you walk into a pet store with puppies it is so hard not to fall in love and want to take one home, but the only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying from the places they sell to. If they can't make a profit, they will stop doing it.

I don't want to see her go through all that pain, and all the health issues that goes along with it. Of course I want to be sourround with yorkie puppys but then giving them away, and everything. UHH! What should I do ?

First of all, you have impressed me, only 14 and asking all the right question. We are here to help you. Maggie is too small, you should not breed her because it could kill her. Try your hardest to show your mom the facts and why this pup should not have a litter. Welcome to YT Lissette

I still wouldn't think so, I mean the guys really nice, we got out other dog from them which just passed away, he ate something which caused him to have something wrong. All over there store they have no puppy mills posters. She came with her brother, and we know her parents names, do you guys honestly think shes a puppymill dog ?

Now I think shes going to die, the vet said she was in 100% condidion, im like freaking out, si she going to be okay ?

maggies-mommy 05-15-2010 01:23 PM

OMG ! Im on one of the sites fight now. I still don't think shes a mill dog, because she was in perfect condition, she can bark, loves to run, everything a normal dog would do.

Oh my dear, you are young and have much to learn. I think it is wonderful that you care so much about your little girl and doing the research and doing what is best for her. She is very lucky to have you.

That said you must realize that no reputable breeder would ever let their puppy go to a pet store. What's that leave you with? Unreputable breeders, puppy mills.
Of course they are going to deny any association with puppy mills, have you ever heard of anyone admitting to it? It makes sense for them to deny it, otherwise they would lose all their business.
And having a breeder's name, the parents name means nothing. All registries require this. And often times you will see their siblings there as puppy millers sell whole litters to pet stores.

No it doesn't necessarily mean she will end up sick and die but you just never know what will happen as no thought was given as to the genetics and health of her parents. Some puppy mill dogs live perfectly healthy normal lives while others don't, there is just no way of knowing which it will be, it's like playing russian roulette. Just love her and care for her and try not to worry about the future, do the best you can for her, it is all you can do.

maggies-mommy 05-15-2010 02:36 PM

I mean even is she is a puppy mill dog, shes okay now. right ?

If the vet says she's okay, she is probably okay. Just because a dog comes from a mill does not mean she will develop an issue. The chances are just so much higher because the people "breeding" the dogs do not care for the welfare of the animals; they care about money. They do not test for genetic diseases, do not breed for proper standards, and often don't care for the dogs in a manner you would want them to be cared for. If you want more information about puppymills there is a lot out there are there are videos that are quite disturbing and graphic so I would talk to your mom about your concerns and maybe you could look into it together. Please don't let this information affect your relationship with your dog. She is your baby now and you should love her as such. As long as you keep up with regular vet appointments as you should with any dog, things will probably be okay. We are not trying to argue with you; just give you advice as per your question. It is not advised that you breed a dog when you know nothing about her background genetic and otherwise. And in the future, if you decide to get another dog, a pet store is not the place to go.

Love your baby for who she is. All dogs deserve love no matter where they come from.
