it may not even count...but I TOTALLY want to buy a little kiddie pool for my boys this summer...we finally own a house, and we finally have our own yard! which equals kiddie pool I think :) (i'm thinking we won't be telling daddy when we go out to get it, either, hehe)

I agree that you have to be VERY careful with Yorkies (or any small breed) in a pool, but mine love to swim. They especially like getting on a raft and floating around in the water with me. :D

Here are two of mine and my mom's Yorkie and her Shih Tzu mix in the pool on our Florida vacation last year. They all loved to run around the edges of the pool and chase each other, and my little one DeDe slipped and fell in the pool at one point. Even though she had been swimming earlier and does it well, she panicked and was frantically turning circles because the fall shocked her and she was far away from the steps. I was right there to grab her though within 10 seconds, but I can only imagine what might have happened if I hadn't been there. I also have a pond in my backyard and when they're outside playing a couple of them like to try and sneak in. I NEVER let mine around water without being right there with them...heck I don't even let mine outside period without me right with them. Yorkies have that terrier personality in them tucked away, so if they can get into it...they will! I don't trust mine at all...;)

Phoebe just took her first swim this weekend! We have a Dachshund that lOVES to swim. In fact, he leaps off the fountain half way across the pool. Poor Phoebe was left inside to watch so we decided we would give her a try. She absolutely loved it! I was a nervous wreck though. My son was in the pool with his hand under her, and I was outside the pool holding on to the leash. We live in Florida and it's going to get hot so I want her to enjoy the pool with all of us but...I NEVER LET HER IN THE POOL AREA UNSUPERVISED!!!
I say as long as your baby likes it, be watchful and go for it!:D

For a smile -

NOT A yorkie but talk about having the time of his life !

warning - this is showing an unsupervised dog - but it will make you smile

I take it back - someone had to video this !

Love this picture too. About 10 years ago, I had my three yorkies in our swimming pool (( oval doughboy). I had taken a round inflateable toy that had pockets in it to set your beer in to float around, and taped an unbrella in it and carpeted it with indoor/outdoor carpet that looked like grass. I would float all three of them in the pool on that floatable toy. It was too cute. Wish I had pics of that!

I was just curious the chemicals from the pool do not bother them ????

Nico29 05-04-2010 05:02 AM

I know that my eyes can get irritated after going swimming so I wonder if they feel the same. Good question about the chemicals. I guess I would use the Vet Solutions ear cleaner after he came out to dry up water in his ears. I think that even with supervision a life jacket is a must. At least for us anyway. Besides, they have the cutest styles!

YORKIES SHOULD BE TREATED THE SAME AS A TWO YEAR OLD AROUND A SWIMMING POOL. THEY SHOULD BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES!!!!..

This statement is soo important!! Lola loves the water so much she will and has on many occasions jumped in the pool on her own. My little one (Lea) is sensitive to the chlorine however if I rinse her when she gets out her skin does not get irritated. We live at the beach and the girls have become so used to the water and are great swimmers but I never look away for even a second. When we visit friends who have a built in pool the girls spend most of their day in life jackets.
Just make sure your baby can tolorate the chlorine.

I bought a baby pool for cooper and he tried to swim in it, however the water was only about 6" high. I decided to go to Walmart and buy one of those rubber pools. It's 8' round and about 3' deep. The whole setup cost less than $50. He loved the pool so much, we had to put a little fence up for security purposes. Need I say more? Now, he sits and cries at the fence because he wants to go swimming so badly. Check out the video!

Swimming

Miss Bella loves the pool we have a special toy that when we throw it in she will dive in and get it and swim to the steps and come on out. If toy is not in she does not try. Mind you we are in the pool also she is not alone..!!

Now Jack is another thing he won't go in he would rather play in the water hose or the water sprinklers. which he is doing right now.(ha)

Love
Cheryl

Hahaha! Omg that is adorable! I love his little dive! My dad has a pool over at his house but I may consider purchasing one of these rubber pools for our regular house!

AllDogBoots 05-04-2010 11:05 AM

You really should try it. It comes with a filter, but I actually had to purchase a better filter. You have to maintain it like a real pool, but believe me, it's so worth it!

roxygirl1281 05-04-2010 01:38 PM

We just bought a house and it has a pool...I am so excited to be able to bring them into the pool!! Debating life jackets. I NEVER plan on leaving them alone in the pool, but I think it would be cute and doubly safe.
