Don't tell Joey

I did not read all five pages of this post, but (please don't be offended), why does everyone want to groom their yorkies to look like a different breed? (Scnauzer cut). I just think yorkies look soo beautiful with their long hair. Different from other breeds because they do have hair-not fur.
Hope I'm not opening a can of worms here I think some yorkie boys can pull it off, but I'm sticking to the basic yorkie look.

I kept thinking about this so I asked around the office today about groomers. One place was named by a few different people, so I checked them out online and then called them. I liked everything they had to say & they had excellent online reviews....and they're in a very convenient part of town for me. So I'm going to go in and look around the place tomorrow. If I like it there, I have an appointment for Murphy next Wednesday.

They use a hand held dryer not a cage, have a play area for the pups when they aren't actually being groomed (unless you ask them to crate your pup) and I'm told by co-workers that everything is kept nice and clean, and they really seem to have a lot of affection for the pups they work on. And their photo gallery online was impressive.

I feel really good about this place so far. But, I'm still a very nervous mommy. Oh, and they can groom while I wait but they preferred that I not be in the exact same room with him the first time or two that they groom him - they said pups usually behave and adjust better without their mommies right there with them. I had half-way thought that might be the case, and I'm alright with being in the next room until he's all booteeful.

I had Joey in long hair for almost three years, and I loved it, but he has weekly playtime with my grown son's dog, and the playtime was too hard on his coat. This is a really practical cut, yet it looks really fancy. Before I saw this cut, there seemed to be only two choices, long, or puppy cut, and this just gives a third choice, and then you can do different things with the head. Some people like a topknot others don't, and the facial hair or chest hair can be cut different lengths. We let the tail hair grow out, and that gives a slightly different look too. The advantage of having a long hair dog is that you can modify the appearance with different cuts. For example, you really can't do much with a Chihuahua, as far as variation of cuts. This is a great summer cut and for those living in hot climates you get a practical haircut, but don't lose the "style." Same thing for nursing mothers, it's much cuter than an all shaved look. For those that love clothes, it works well with clothes too.

Here's a picture of an actual schnauzer cut, as you can see the body is shaved, but the hair leg isn't that long, and they leave a little skirt, and the face is an entirely different cut. http://www.durfee.net/blog/uploaded_...all-771386.jpg. I really don't think any of us are trying to make our dogs look like Schnauzers. There is nothing more beautiful that a Yorkie in long coat and full head, and I don't blame anyone for keeping that style.

Bonny...I'm glad you believe to have found a place you are comfortable with. The only other thing that comes to mind is a bordetella shot. Does Murphy have one?
In my area we are having a break-out of kennel cough from grooming salons. Don't wanna scare you, but it's something to consider! You may want to check with your Vet to see if they are having any problems.

Not opening a can of worms at all! I for one felt very much like you. I believe although there are many reasons we decide on a particular breed as our pet, one of the main reasons is the "look" of the dog. And Yorkies with their long, flowing coats are just absolutely stunning (IMHO).

I felt the same about my Biewer. I felt to cut his hair was to change his identity. But reality is, not all the Yorkie or Biewers have the ideal long, silky, flowing, easy to groom coat. My Biewer was one of them.

Now my Yorkie...her coat would get matted, but they would brush out rather easy. However, she LOVES to go for walks and with temps in the 80's and 90's here in Pa....she would get so hot!

So cutting down the coat, at times, becomes a necessity. But some of us don't want to do a simple puppy cut. we won't something more "cutting edge". Therefore, we've fallen in love with "The Joey Cut" as we lovingly refer to it.

Hope that helps for you to understand, at least for me, why I cut my dogs coats!

PS: I still have one more Biewer that has the lovely silk coat. I'll let him grow into a show coat!

So glad you mentioned that! I can't remember - he was just in last month for his annual & I've already forgotten. Calling the vet now!

There has got to be something going around. Over the past week there have been many reports of kennel cough in boarding/daycare facilities. One place actually had to close to disinfect the entire place. I work at a grooming facility and we closed yesterday for a few hours in the morning to clean the place down even though none of our dogs had been effected.

until this passes i wouldn't take my dog to the dog park or a boarding/daycare place.

Today was Bonnie's hair appt. I printed out Joey's picture and took it to her groomer. Bless her little heart, she is already so hot and panting in the evenings I wanted to cut her short so she wouldn't be so miserable.
They did a pretty good job, but I would have liked her face to be more "puppy" cut, with the sides cut closer.
Here is her before and after.

Oh, I have been worried about her being too fat. After she got shaved, I see it is not as bad as I thought

I love it, I was able to open the first picture, I don't know why it's not showing but she looks much trimmer in the short cut. Now she can showoff that body! I do little touch-ups to his face, if I hold one side, I can start at the ear and just cut down. The hard part is getting both sides even! As it grows out you can learn to tweak it on what you like best. Hope Bonnie's happy with it!

Bonnie looks fantastic! I bet she is velvety soft, and oh so cool. Welcome to the Joey Club.

I'm going to try a modified Joey on my Morkie Meika this weekend; just got the 7F bade for my Oster today. Hope she looks thinner too, as she's a bit chunky.
