New member Hi I'm new here but I've had a Male yorkie for 2 years. He is 5 yrs old. He is one of the family ! ! I just brought home a female that was born Nov 21 2009. I have to ask how soon can she get pregnant? I want her to be 2 yrs old? before she breeds. How soon do I have to start worrying ? No, I'm already worried.. I just saw the puppy care guide stickie .I see that I messed that up already for an addition to the family. I will read all the stickies and search enjine but I sure could use some quick advice . thank you |
Are you saying your female puppy is now 5 months old and you are worried she may be pregnant? Am I reading that right? I don't think females come into heat that early but if you post this thread in the Breeder's section for sure you will get the proper information for your questions. Oh and welcome to YT. |
Oh no, she's not preganant, I just want to keep her that way .. |

Hi and welcome to YT!! |
Hi and Welcome! As far as her getting pregnant, she should be too young, but please spay her. You should also have your male neutered. If cost is a problem, look into low cost spay/neuter programs near you. You can also buy spay/neuter certificates at www.friendsofanimals.org. Look at the right-hand side for a red box and enter your zipcode. You will then see a listing of vet clinics that accept the certificates near you. |

Yes, I agree with this, I've read too many horror stories, and "whoops" pregnancies. If you don't want to get her pregnant until two years old, you need to keep them apart all the time until than! Because unless you are a very knowledgeable breeder, you probably will overlook all the signs, some little girls aren't as obvious as others. Why do you want to breed her? There are so many pet yorkies who need homes, and with the economy a lot of millers are even going out of business. If you are only breeding for a little extra money, I urge you to do something else, breeding is very expensive if it's done properly, and if improperly done, you are condemning a puppy and it's family to a lifetime of grief. |
Welcome to YT:) |
welcome to yt!!! please spay your babies=] like others have said, they will thank you for it! |
thanks for the link !! One reason is that I want to breed her later so that I can give a puppie to my grownup daughter. I am already thinking of getting the male neutered . One reason he might be too large for her ? 2nd reason, I don't think it's possible to watch them 100% of the time. She is 5 months so I have a little time to make an informed decision. I have lots of reading too do. Feel free to throw any advice at me lol. I'll post pics this week :o) |

Welcome to YT! I would suggest that if you are considering breeding in the future, you start researching NOW. Find an experienced breeding mentor to work with who will help you evaluate your dogs to determine if they are of a quality that *should* be bred and who will guide you though having all the proper health tests done and preparation for breeding/whelping and raising a litter. If your sole reason for breeding her is to provide your daughter with a puppy, take the easy route and buy her one. You will come out way ahead in the long run, both monetarily and with a shred more sanity. |

Breeding your little female because you want to provide a puppy to your grown daughter, isn't a good enough reason to breed her. If you aren't able to watch them 100% of the time, seperate them when you can't. But, your statement brings up another aspect of breeding. You will have to give up a minimum of 12 - 13 weeks of your life. You're whole life; day and night will have to be devoted to the care of the mother and the pups. This would begin at a week before her due date and not ending until those pups are placed with their forever families. The cost of pretesting alone is expensive. Let alone setting aside money for a possible emergency and the required vetting of the pups. You'll need deep pockets. Much less expensive to go buy your daughter another yorkie. |
Can I just add something to what these very knowledgeable and experienced members have already said? Breeding to give your daughter a free puppy isn't really a great reason and here is why. Many breeders tell you that they are out money or break even when having a litter. There are so many variables to doing it right and safely and if you aren't a pro your baby could get into trouble before your head can spin. It might sound cheaper in theory than spending money on a puppy but as someone who just had an "oops" pregnancy before I found YT and just spent $1600 on a c-section they had the potential to be very dangerous I can assure you this is not the cheaper way to go in acquiring a puppy! And then once the puppies are born there is the added expense of not just one puppy having all the vet visits, shots, tail docking etc but however many you have in the litter! Why not leave it to the professionals, keep your baby safe and when your daughter is ready find a good and knowledgeable breeder to buy her puppy from? Along with the money, yorkie pups require round the clock care 24/7. It's a full time job! There are jugs easier and more inexpensive ways of acquiring a puppy than putting your baby through a litter and spending a ton of time and money in the process! I just Want to spare you from experiencing what I had to go through because I didn't have knowledgeable people like the ones who have commented above helping me make the right decision. Also just an FYI...my Paris went into heat at 7 months and showed no visible signs and while I understand that is early for most yorkies to go into heat and not the norm I am living proof it can happen and she got pregnant from one oops tying! Just be careful and get someone fixed pronto! U won't be sorry you did it! If there are any other questions I can answer about what happened to me I'd be glad to chat with you! Good luck! Have a great night! |

Nothing like first hand experience, I hope others will learn from this. I've read of a few others who went into heat at this age, and while it's great to know the average, no dog is really average. |

But my dog is registered! Every bitch should have a litter! I want another dog just like mine! My kids should see the wonders of birth and life! I want to make some money! provide a puppy to your grown daughter OK, none of these are the reasons I wanted Zeke to mate with Zoe, 1 1/2 yrs from now. You are probably going to prefer that I had one of those reasons..... LOVE... is the reason.. He's a male, I'm a male. I keep thinking that he would love having sex once before he grows old.. A few days ago, he had bulges in front of his testicles. The Vet told me last year that, that would happen. A build up of fluid. The Vet said Zeke would release it(?) A friend at work, his boxer(male) got severely sick because the boxer didn't have sex. Can a dog have a vasectomy and still have sex ? My wife spends 24 hrs a day with the dogs. You can't get any more attention or love than that.. After 30 seconds with Zoe this morning, Zoe became a member of the family forever.. |

Moderators, please delete my account. I thought this was a FRIENDLY community. I didn't know that people was going to bash me because I wanted ZEKE to be able to do the same thing that the bashers are doing, without getting puppies |
