This is a valid point to make, but I have to disagree. I have three children (ages 7, 5, and 4), as well as three dogs (two 4lb yorkies, and a 20 lb pug). I've yet to have a problem. I guess that everyone is different, but I totally enjoy being surrounded by babies, both skin and fur. They are my world. :)

Shaunna, you are a great mom but so many people get rid of their dogs as soon as the baby comes. Or they are neglected. Rachel I know you will make the right decision and we are on you side.

Same here. I have three children (7,5, and 2) and I have one...soon to be two yorkies. My children are amazing with Roxy and I know they will be with my new little man. It all depends on the dogs and the family I guess, I have met many families who have no business having dogs simply because of the neglect they get (because they are so busy with their children) or the roughness of their children. My family is my world, both fur and skin!!

I probably should have used the word "maybe" instead of "can" be a problem. I had a number of yorkies turned into rescue as well as YT members who rehomed their dogs because of this issue so I just wanted her to think about it. It is hard when you are young to realize a woman's life is really going to change if she has dogs and then add in children, it can be overwhelming for some. Some can't deal with the potty issue many Yorkies have with a new baby....As I said it was just food for thought.:)

I have a soft spot for Chihuahua's so I think they are both adorable. Keep us informed if you get one!

I think Chihuahuas are really cute, but....just a question...Have you known many Chi's?? I've known a few that friends had and they all were sweet and cute when they were young, but they turned snappy, yappy, and mean later on. I know it's all about the training, but sometimes it's the breed. Would your current dog be ok with a new, high energy type of addition??

I agree. And I sure wouldn't pick a Chi for a young family with children.

Vet bills with two are double trouble. You are still in the "honeymoon" stage with Sadie since she is still a puppy. As they get older, dogs tend to rack up vet bills, especially toy breeds. Wait until dentals becomes a yearly thing. Around here they are about $300 w/pre op bloodwork. Or Sadie's knees.... Hopefully they won't get worse, but some do. LP surgery is in the thousands.

I personally would stick with one dog for awhile. You are just a newlywed and have said how much you and your husband like to travel and do fun things together. Now is the time to do that, before you have children. Having pets can tie you down as it's expensive to board them.

Good advice.

Although I'm in my empty nesting stage - I opt for one at a time - for many reasons. Some due to costs already and costs yet to come (both vet and grooming). I also fear that if I get another that Bailey's personallity might change? She might become more independent and/or insubordinate. Or she might not like her new roommate? I'd hate for Bailey to feel that she's been put aside for the new one. Things are just perfect as they are - and I don't want to rock the boat.

All that said - I'm always on the look out for another -I just don't act on it.

I know its tempting - you'll make the right decision for you.

Just wondering if anyone noticed all of the red flags that I noticed about the one rescue? They are rehoming HUNDREDS of puppymill dogs! :eek::thumbdown:eek:

Thank you for the compliment. I guess statistics do prove that alot of people get rid of their dogs when a baby arrives. I just can't fathom the idea of doing that. :(

Good Luck with whatever you decide Rachel. I'd definitely be staying away from that rescue though! It's so nice that you are considering adoption.

It is their mission to do this..I realize different rescue's have different opinions on this issue but they only deal with puppymill dogs. I have been on their mailing list for over 8 years. They have taken in some of the worse of the worse and made them healthy again. In some of the cases it was mills that were closed down on the east coast.

You have much more knowledge about these types of things then I do so I will stand corrected. :) So then they are more like a shelter? My concern would then be people not fully comprehending what they are adopting and also how do you ensure the adoptive family being a good fit with the dogs? They are willing to fly dogs for an additional fee, sight unseen to a new family. There are many people with good intentions but not fully aware of what is really involved regarding the responsibility of adopting a former mill dog.
