Shorkie questions
 
Hello! I just joined the forum today and performed a search for "Shorkies" but did not quite find what I was looking for.

I've been thinking about getting a dog for a long time and am/was considering a Yorkshire terrier. My past dogs (many years ago) have been Labradors. I'm living in a small condo with my mom that allows small pets.

I would like a dog that isn't yappy or is needy. I'd like to be able to relax with the dog and not have it jumping around too much. I don't mind daily grooming. A breeder I emailed thought Yorkies would be too needy for me.

So in my Internet travels I came across a cute mix called Shorkies. What is the temperament of a Shorkie? How much terrier personality does a Shorkie have? What else do I have to consider with this breed? I am not planning on showing, just having an easy-going companion.

I have to ask...what is a shorkie? What's it mixed w/ besides a yorkie? Sorry, maybe I'm naive or its late & I can't think! :)

Sorry! From my understanding it is a Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier mix.

Schnauzer and Yorkie, and they are both terriers so a mix of that sort will still have the terrier disposition.

Welcome to YT. I'm sure you will find many helpful answers to your questions.
I have never heard of a shorkie before!

I do want to let you know though that really, any breed you choose will be needful of you and most dogs from my experience, will bark :p The dogs I have had have always been like "buddies" for me, I take them on my errands, play around with them or just laze on the couch. My dogs have always been pretty playful and quite rambuncious. Wanting a dog that isn't needy, yappy or jumpy is like saying I want kids, but I don't want them to be loud, dirty or a pain in the butt!!! LOL

Sorry, my error, this is the first I have heard of them as Shih Tzu / Yorkshire Terrier. I have known them as the Schnauzer yorkie mix before. Although it should not suprise me, they are cross breeding almost every breed now, and what they charge for what used to be labled as a mutt is ridiculous. They want more for the mixes than they do for the purebred dogs now. You can go to any shelter and get a mixed breed for just the cost of the spay/neuter and will be saving a life. Before I fell in love with the yorkies, I got several of my pets from shelters, and they were wonderful, loving animals. Plus, you can get almost any mix or even a pure bred from shelters, if you ask them to notify you when they get in so and so breed.

After going through this site I have realized that it is nothing but a broker fronting for puppymillers. You would have to be very careful about purchasing from this place. Anytime they state that a deposit is NON REFUNDABLE, and that they can transfer it to another puppy at the breeders discretion, it should raise a red flag in your mind. In other word, what they are implying is that once they have any of your money, you have lost it. Any reptuable breeder will always refund your deposit if you change your mind, or if something happens, if they even take a deposit.

I agree with the breeder. I would discourage you from getting any breed mixed with a yorkie, because they are extremely needy and require much attention and are extremely active throughout their lives.

:shocked7q I just had a look at that link that was posted. The puppies are really cute but $1600 for a mixed breed! Does anybody really pay prices like that?

isn't THAT the truth??? maybe a mature Yorkie would work for you. have you tried the PURE BRED RESCUE in your area?

that took me by surprise as well. $1600.0!!?? :eek:

Have you thought about adopting an adult dog? All puppies are needy and lot of them are loud, hyper and takes a lot of times to train. Just ask anyone on this group how much effort and sleepless night they had/having when their dogs were puppies.

Any small breed is going to be yappy and many large breeds. Maybe you should consider a cat. They are very independant, loveable, and a good campanion. Cats are waaayyyy easier to liter train (almost always by the time they are winged) Anyway good luck in your search.

PS
I forgot to say you can almost always find free kitens in your local paper, or for a very small fee you can rescue a cat...

Previousily, i had a purebred yorkie female, now I have a male shorkie, which is a yorkie/shih tzu mix. I find him just as needy as my yorkie, however, he is quite bad. I don't know if its a male/female thing. He doesn't like to cuddle and is getting into mischief all the time. I almost think it is an attention seeking behaviour. They both require alot of attention as they constantly demand to be around you. They are like velcro. God help you if you have to leave them home. I barely can get out of the door without him. My female was like that as well. I crated both dogs during the day while at work and they seemed to adapt to this quite well. Sometimes they would destroy their crates, but the majority of the time no problem. He is very very adorable and cute. He looks just like a yorkie, face, coat, etc. except his ears are floppy and he is a bit more bulkier. Mine is 11 months old and weighs almost 5 pounds. I am not sure if i answered all your questions. Hope this helps.

I was reading this and thought about Muffin. She was never independent in her life and always wanted to be with me no matter where I went and you know, too, that as they get older they require as much or more attention than when they were puppies.

I agree that a kitten would be the way to go for this individual, though. They don't want you to bother them. They are independent, too. :D

Welcome to YT. Never heard of a Shorkie before, but the little guy in the photo above is a cutie.

$1,600 -- no way! Please be very careful and do your homework before bringing a new baby home. ;)

A freind of mine has this breed...but they are usually called snorkies instead of shorkies. Here is what they look like full grown.

And by the way they have most of the same personality traits as yorkies...they are just bigger.

my best friend has a toy schnauzer and we have joked about what we would call their puppies if they had babies and we decided we would call them Schnorkies!! :) hahaha



just saw the post before mine.....have to call my friend right now and tell her we were right!!!!

THE PIC THAT YOU ATTACHED IS A PICTURE OF A SNORKIE WHICH IS A YORKIE/SCHNAUSER, BUT THE PIC PREVIOUS IS OF A SHORKIE/YORKIE AND SHIH TZU MIX. THAT IS MY SHORKIE, BUT I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A SNORKIE UNTIL TODAY. THEY ARE CUTE TOO!!! :)

YEP

Snorkie is Schnauser Yorkie
Shorkie is Shih -Tzu Yorkie

they BOTH are cute

I think the barky or yappy ones all have to be based on an individual basis. I have had all kinds of dogs through here that people asked me how come they are so calm when they are supposed to be yappy(CHIHUAHUAS, Terriers, POODLES ETC...) and then I have had wild and crazy LABS so go figure. Luckily most that I get as babies or pretty young leave here with really good temperments and mostly no yippy like barking. I think it has to do with I try and teach them from the beginning that I won't have the barking all the time....LOL I try and follow all the training rules for this... now only if I could get accomplished with the Potty thing I would have all my dogs adopted PRONTO....LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

I should have specified that I will probably be getting an adult dog.

Cats are out of the question...seven years ago I gave mine away because of a severe asthma attack which required hospitalization.

I have been attracted to the Yorkies/Shorkies because they are sooo cute but it looks like I should consider another breed. Any suggestions? I'm living in an apartment and have sound sensitivity due to a previous accident (hence not being able to tolerate barking)

Yorkies are definitely yappy/barky little ones - if you have a sound sensitivity, then they might not be the dog for you. A friend of my daughter had a barkless dog, I think it was a bimenji (I know that is spelled wrong!). It was a little dog, not as little as a Yorkie, but not too big and had short hair and a cute little tail that curled up over its back. I don't know about it's general personality though???
