Do your Yorkies wear their Rabies tag?
 
Just curious w/ all the discussion lately of collars/tags/harnesses/etc.

Jackson wears a collar pretty much 24/7 with 1 tag on it which contains his name/last name and my phone number on it. But he does not wear his rabies tag ever, I keep it stored in Jackson's folder with all of his shot records, and information.

I was thinking about putting the rabies tag on his harness since we wear that for walks and dog park trips etc, maybe it would be a smart thing to have on him? I dunno.

The jingle jangle of the 2 tags together on his collar annoy me lol so I never put both on it... but what do you all do?:confused:

I keep my rabies tages in our doggie bag. We take the bag with us whenever we leave the house (like a baby diaper bag) That way I will have it just in case it is ever needed. I also keep a copy of vet records and other necessaties for when we leave.

It's on one of Buddy's harnesses. Because we change I have an ID tag on each one but the rabies tag hangs only on one.
He only wears a harness outdoors and wears no collar indoors.

Well, Ellie rarely wears tags (bad mommy I supose:rolleyes:), but when she does, she wears both. Isn't it illegal for them to not wear it off of owner property in some areas?

Rocks wears his all the time. I personaly like the jingling of his tags so I can hear where he is or where he shouldn't be.

We don't have any kind of rabies tags here in CA. Teddi has a dog license but I keep it attached to her carrier cuz it is way too big for her to wear. She does jingle jangle all the time though cuz she had a bell and a name tag and a charm on her collar. I need to know where she is since she is so small. She is so used to the jingling that when I take it off she doesn't know what to do cuz it's so quiet. When I pick up her collar and shake it she comes running to get it put back on.

I keep Cerise's on my key ring because I always have my keys when we leave out of the house.

I personally like the jingle. Kaji wears a cat bell in addition to his tag. :p I like to know where he is as he's always under foot. He's so fast too!! I think he's behind me and next thing I know, I've stepped on him. :eek: As for the rabies tag, I hate that ugly thing!!! He has two collars, one blue, one red and they have matching tags. The red has a red dog bone, one side has his name in Japanese with my number, and the other side his name is in English. The blue one is a blue pirate skull and crossbones, it only has his name in Japanese and my number. So the rabies tag just clashes with either one. :thumbdown
I did put the rabies tag on his harness recently, with his bell (my brother wants to choke me for having that f_ing bell on him :rolleyes:) so he wears it when we're outside.

CA doesn't have a rabies tag? YES!!!! Kaji has one because he came from MO, so he wears that one around.

I got a rabies tag from my vet (in San Francisco). But no, Thor doesn't wear any tags. I think about it sometimes, but he's so low to the ground, the tags would be hitting his knees. He is chipped; I feel that's enough protection here, since shelters are chip-savvy. One of my friends found a stray dog here once, and when he took him to the shelter, they were able to call his owners immediately based on the chip info.

Pasquale has his tags on his harness..and he only wears his harness if we go out of the house. But i was telling my DH about the story of Megansmomma (i think that who it was, i'm sorry if i got the name wrong). But anyways, i was telling the story to my husband...and we both just looked at each other scared that this could someday happen to us. So i ordered a Chattiesmom harness cause it looks much more comfy than the one he has now and i plan on keeping his harness with tags on him everyday.

Mine wear theirs because we go to the dog park sometimes and it is required there... but I like it on all the time anyway, better safe then sorry I guess.

You can buy these things that go around the tags and prevent the jingle.

I've found that city shelters in my area are more concerned about $$$ than anything else. I doubt they will check for microchips, shove a new one in, and send them off to be adopted. I feel the only way the microchip would work in my area is if Kaji falls into the hands of the SPCA, a private small breed rescue (only available in "good" areas), or if a good Samaritan takes him to a vet and asks to scan him. :( His chances of being recovered by chip only are slim.

yes, mine wear thier rabies tags along with 2 ID tags on thier collars at all times. The only time I remove thier collars is when I put them in thier kennels when we leave and at night.

My parents got a ticket once for not having the rabies tag on their yorkie, even though they told the cop the tag was at home he still gave them a ticket. This was when I was little and I JUST found out about it, so I'm going to put Bailey's on his harness so he only wears it when he goes outside.

I've heard bad things about LA shelters, but this did kind of shock me. Do you really think they would be actively dishonest? If anything, it's cheaper to re-unite a dog with its owner - no need to feed the dog, shelter it, have a vet remove/replace the chip, etc.

I'm not saying dogs shouldn't wear tags, I was just surprised to hear you express that level of distrust of your local shelters.

We have to bring a "doggie bag" with her epi-pen where ever we go, so I just keep her rabies tag in it.

When I was looking to adopt a dog from my local shelter, they gave me so many run arounds. I would call the main department office, and they would give me all the info on the pup I would ask about, where it came from, how they acquired it, what medical needs if any it had, and when it would be up for adoption. When I did actually physically go to the local shelter where the pup I wanted was, the local workers would tell me things like, their adoption date was weeks ago, this dog doesn't exist, we're holding it for observation, and on and on with the excuses. Their facial expressions said more than the words they said, you could tell that their excuses were pure bs. I also found out that they don't really screen potential adopters. So yeah, I distrust my local shelters.

I just ordered my 2nd harness from chattiesmom! I love them! :thumbup: Maybe I will attach the rabies tag to the harness from now on... he doesn't wear the harness 24/7 although some days I get lazy about it and just leave it on him for a while.

Even though I only take Roxie out on her harness, she does wear a collar at all times with her ID tag and rabies tag...just in case.

This discusses the problems that a lot of municipal shelters have (bad "customer service", etc).

Sadly, if a shelter has a high kill rate, which many L.A. shelters do, it's actually better that they don't screen. Some shelters actually have 90%+ kill rates, so an animal that stays is almost guaranteed to die. They'll have a better chance with anyone who is willing to take them.

Yes, in Michigan they are required to wear their tags whenever outside. I bought a Walk Nice Harness from Chattiesmom (love it!) which has an extra D-ring on the front. That's where Sophies rabies tab is and her ID is on her collar so they don't clang. She only wears the collar & harness when we are out and about.

Unless they're returned. I volunteered for the SPCA and they have quiet a few returns. They do screen but sometimes it just doesn't work out. It's sad because one week I groom a very nice dog, then he/she isn't there for the next grooming, so of course we're all happy for it, then they're there for the next grooming. We had a doggy named Xena returned to us 4 times because she was high energy. The adopting family knew this up front and would guarantee that they would exercise her and work with her energy level. She was even adopted to an avid hiker once and even that didn't work out because of her energy level. I think that's why screening is important and I'm happy YTNR does screening. I don't know what their return rate is, but I do think it's sad that so many people do get dogs on impulse only.

(Sorry, still off topic)

In an ideal situation, all potential owners should be screened. I'm talking about situations where shelters have very high kill rates and/or the staff is not competent enough to screen effectively.

I think it varies county to county, instead of the whole state. In orange county we have to have the dogs wear a rabies tag, and it was the same as a license. they give you this nasty silver tag with sharp as hell edges that I had to file down and it has a license number on it and the county's animal control phone number on it. They say it's for id purposes if the animal is lost. Well think about it, if my Uni gets lost, her name tag with MY number is on it. If the collar falls off, all tags are gone, including theirs. What's still on her? Her chip. But this is just the way for the county to get revenue.

Sasha always has a collar on. I don't put her rabies tag on there, but I do have her name tag and her license on there. There are what I like to call some "funny neighbors" in my parent's neighborhood who would be the ones to call the city and report a dog not being licensed if you made them mad. Luckily it doesn't cost much so I don't mind paying for it each year. I don't mind the jingle jangle either because like others have said, it helps me to know where she is when she's running around the house.

Elliott wears his nametag, his license tag, and his rabies tag whenever we go out to a public park, trail, etc. There are enough old cranks in this town that I don't want to take any chances.

Callie wears her collar all the time pretty much except bath time and she has a tag that has her name on it and my cell number and then her Rabies tag. I love the jingle because it helps me know where she is and we take her to dog stores a lot and last year when the weather was nice she went to the dog parks a lot and we hope to be doing that a lot this year too :)
