Vent about perspective puppy owners!!
 

Ok so here is one of those stories that just burn my butt!
I get a call from this couple wanting to come look at my pups. The woman has been here before and seen my last litter of pups 6 months ago. She wanted a female for breeding and I told her that I very rarely place pups for breeding and that if I did she would need to be committed to being mentored and learning for at least a year before placing a pup with her and that the pup must be a great representation of the breed which takes a long time. She then inquired about pet prices vs breed prices.. :mad:...needless to say she left with a "think on it" and promised to do alot of research but did say the pet route looked more like what she was ready for...
So she calls yesterday and wants to come right over thinking she was ready for a PET. I said sure and she shows up 15 mins later. She examines the 4 pups I have and picks up the tiniest one (don't they all:rolleyes:) She then starts the whole pet vs breeder questioning. I told her that 3 of these pups are only 8 weeks and the other is 4 months (the one she is holding) and is only 1.5 pounds and pet only. She then picks up the tiny male (1 pound ) and is asking about studding him out. At this point I start getting .... lets say...agitated with her. She then tells me about a person who bought a "teacup" male who is now 8 months old an they are going to stud him out and could he mate with a Yorkie!!:mad: then goes on to say he needs Nutrical every few hours or he "walks around drunk" until he gets the sugar!! that he is very calm and mellow and sleeps alot. AND THEY ARE GOING TO BREED THAT!!
I am so upset I could almost spit nails:mad::mad::mad:. I spend the next 20 mins educating this woman and her hubby on breeding practices, risks, cost, that there no such thing as a teacup, ethics and more ethics. She tells me she just got her tax refund and is ready to buy a pup. I try to politely tell her that she needs to research (like I told her 6 months ago) and research some more and that none of my pups would be leaving with them. She even looked surprised!!:rolleyes:...
These are the days I wonder if I am cut out for this....:cry:

Hang in there i know sometimes it must be hard but you have to do whats best for your pups. let the stupid people deal with each other and save yourself the fustration

I don't know you but I do think that you are cut out for breeding your Yorkies. You sound like the kind of breeder that has the best interest of your babies first and foremost. Anyone looking for a Yorkie, whether for show, breeding, or a pet would be wise to deal with you as you know what you are talking about. The breeder that I got Buddy from (just last week) is protective of her babies also and I think that's what makes her (and you) a great breeder. Good luck placing your precious babies.

You sound like an awesome breeder! I would want my breeder to tell me that I wasn't ready for one and refuse to sell. Keep it up. I'm sure a lot of breeders come across this now that this "teacup" junk is popular. All people can see is $$$$

Thank you for posting this story. It's so refreshing to see a breeder be more concerned about the welfare of the pups than about the money. Keep up the great work!!

We all have those days. I posted an e-mail that I got last night on the thread "What Not To Say To Your Breeder". People still remain uneducated, and I have to realize that my main focus should be on educating. But, this person really was a lulu....she obtained my contact info from the Mother Club and wanted a cross bred dog (yorkie with a Bichon, cream colored, potty and obedience trained).....I chuckled, Nancy1999 said I should have answered her with: Do you want butter cream or taupe cream.

Yes, some days you wonder why you continue to breed. Bottom line, your pups are yours, and the final decision of where they go remains yours.

I read that post and burst out laughing right before I read that you did. I may not be a YTCA member but OMG...gee you breed Yorkies so that means you breed anything?? Right??:eek: ...nope you can't fix stupid or the world. I just wish all my hours of educating this lulu would have made a difference....

OH I screen heavily...but with her I did not need to...she was openly stupid.. I catch most of them on the spay/neuter but have had one slip by me and that one broke my heart. I used to let people down nicely, however now I just tell them bluntly cause some just do not get it. I sometimes just wonder why we do it...like Mary said...we must be nuts:rolleyes:

Can you send me the info on the whole "teacup" thing. I now own little Fizz-gig and will be asked questions too. Would like to be able to inform people correctly....same as I do about diabetes, when my son found out he was I learned as much as I could. Would like to be able to "explain" to others about these little guys too.

About a year ago I placed a puppy with a family. A pet contract, spay/nueter. They absolutely love this little girl, but pet quality. Anyway about a month after she went to her new home. I get a call from her owner (now mind you this pup was now close to 5 months of age now), asking if she could breed her. I was a bit flabergasted, since I never expected this question from this lady. I didn't lose my cool, but reiterated the pet only contract. Her answer was but, she's so adorable and I want one litter out of her, she wanted to stud her with one of my boys and would do it all with my instruction. I went on to tell her that if I wasn't willing to keep her, to Champion her and keep her in my breeding program, why would I allow her to. That still didn't penetrate.....My final question to her was are you willing to lose your girl? Her girl was spayed the following week.

I too am proud of you! Good job for saying NO and sticking to your guns! Great job!

Hooray for you for sticking up for your babies!! It is no wonder there are so many dogs at our shelters these days. Anyone who would inquire like they did shouldn't even be allowed to adopt an animal as a pet..never mind for breeding! And why do people want the smaller yorkies....I will never understand that. Our yorkie that we had for almost 10 years was about 12lbs and was the best! Trixie is growing nicely and probably is around 4 1/2 pounds now but she is only 16 weeks old. I am hoping she is about 7 or 8 pounds or even larger is fine. Healthy and happy is what they all should be concerned with...not how tiny!! Kudos to you :animal-pa

BTW...for some who are confused about my username.... I collect antique china teacup sets...cup, saucer and plate!! (I had a breeder tell me the whole "no such thing as a teacup yorkie" once due to my email address)

That story is just downright scary. I don't know how you could remain civil in such a situation, you must have a lot of self-control! Reason #152 why I could never become a breeder.

There are times when you lose your self control......I have on a few occassions.

I am proud of you and hope anyone that breeds is intelligent enough to protect them from idiots.

thank you for educating this lady, it sounds like she sees yorkies as a way to make some money. it upsets me when people think this way and not care for the dog's well being. it was very nice of you to try to educate her. i hope she learned and will not just try to go to someone else who is willing to just sell her dogs to breed. and if she does try to go to someone else, i hope the other breeders will do the same thing that you did. educate her, and not sell her any dogs.

I wish you were closer... I am yearning for another yorkie baby and am so weary of backyard breeders! Living in a small town makes it hard for me to find quality breeders like you! Good for you!

I was red faced to say the least. I spent time educating and kept hitting the "stupid" wall. I just cut my losses and called it done. Since yesterday I have been thinking about the next poor puppy she is going to get and breed. I wish deep down that I could have done more to help another baby...Like Mary said, I can't save the world...but I sure want to :( for these precious babies.

Oh Mary...Mardelin...where are you...Mary I believe has Texas connections....There are wonderful breeders out down in that neck of the woods. YTCA is a great start...

Thank you! I am way deep in South Texas... DH works for the railroad and is ALWAYS gone. I am at home with my 4 human kids and my 1 yorkie baby! We have a tough time doing much driving... my yorkie baby gets carsick and hates to stay with a sitter! As my babies (human ones) are growing, Chloe has really brought this special connection into my life. I tied my tubes with my last baby for medical reasons and I was so depressed afterwards. Chloe helped alleviate that and has shown me that furbabies can give you just the same amount of love if not more and hardly talk back!
