help with puppy weight! i know it's really impossible to tell how big a puppy will be full grown...but my puppy weighed in at 2lbs at 6 weeks old. is he going to be really big? his mom weighs 4.5 lbs, and his dad weighs 3 lbs. i've just been reading about these dogs who are only 1 pound at like 12 weeks. please help!!!! |
My puppy was 2 pounds 10 ounces at 13 weeks. So they are estimating that she will be 5-6 pounds all grown up. I guess the rule of thumb is to double the 12 week weight, but it really isn't an exact science. If my puppy ended up being 20 pounds, I'd love her just as much ;) Your breeder should be able to give you an estimate on full grown weight, I think :) |
here is the run down on my toby: At 12 weeks he was 3 lbs at 16 weeks he was 4 lbs and at 5 months he was ........ 8 lbs  I wanted a larger yorkie so it works out WONDERFULLY for me, you can imagine how much LESS we trip over him now that he isnt so tiny i dont know what he weighed at 8 weeks...... but i would have guess around the 2 lb mark |

i just emailed my breeder, and she said that my puppy was a really fat baby probably b/c the mother only had 2 babies. she still isn't sure how big he'll be, but doesn't think he should be over 6 lbs, but if he's 12 i won't care, i'll still love him :) ...thanks a bunch guys! |
Estimating Weight I think the rule is pretty accurate although definitely not 100%. The vet told me that even though the parents are small, sometimes their genetics go waaay back to grandparents and they can be either larger or smaller. She said this often happens: The breeder gives an estimate between the parents' sizes and the buyer ends up with a puppy much larger than expected. Once they are at least 4 months you can get a better picture of how big they will be. No matter what size, we all love our little babies! :aimeeyork |
I figure based on his 12 week weight that Bo will be about 9 pounds...we'll see. I'm glad he's sturdy and a good eater. I tripped over him this morning and almost stepped on his neck!! He let out a little yelp. My household is VERY active and we'd be paranoid having a tiny one (although they are precious!!) underfoot. At this point in our lives, a bigger Yorkie fits our family better. |
I was told if you double their weight at 3 months of age that it would be a close estimate to the full grown weight. |
according to a chart i have at that age He could be about 6 1/2-7 lbs. |
I have heard to double their weight at 8 weeks and add one pound. |
Thanks for the great info. I was wondering how big little Cooper will be! He is almost 10 weeks old and at his vet visit at 9 weeks, he weighed two pounds two ounces. He could be a little one, I guess. We'll see! Christi |
