Look at it this way, you agreed to move in and pay rent, with dog, landlord accepted your terms and took your money. A material term of that contract was the allowance of your pet. If he had not agreed to that, you would not have moved in. If the lease lapsed, and you are on a month to month, an argument could be made by him that contract period is over.
I certainly would fight this guy. You can't be the only one in this situation.
Hope you are still on your lease, if you are paying your rent, he is going to have a really hard time evicting you. He has to go to court to do this and probably hire a lawyer. If you can't afford one, there are low cost legal clinics that help tenants with evictions. Meanwhile, at some point the lease will be over, start looking for somewhere else to live. In this economy, that should not be too hard.
