Okay, I feel REALLY bad for being pissed right now, but I can't help it!!! In SoCal, I was really blessed to find a vet that cared more about the health of animals than profits. Sure, the office doesn't have a plasma or heated couches, BUT the prices are fair and he took good care of Kobe. Kobe is in the hospital sick right now (I'm currently in Berkeley CA for school) and I had to rush him to a vet. While I'm crying because I have NO CLUE what's wrong with him and worried if he's going to be okay, I'm also sooooo upset because I just spent 1500 bucks!! THEY HAVEN'T EVEN TESTED HIM YET!! I just sometimes get upset because i feel that some vets know we love our babies, so they use that to charge anything they can! I'm upset but then I feel more angry at myself....yes it's true, I'm a starving student...and NOW I have no clue how my rents going to get paid, but Kobe is my baby and I love him. :( |
What did they charge $1,500 for so far? I hope your puppy will be fine. Question everything on the bill they give you. I know when my Ted went in they made me pay up front for things that "might" need to be done, but in the end the bill was like $700 less, but he was having a major nose surgery. Hope you guys are okay. But ask about everything they charge dyou for. good luck. Speedy recovery to your wee one. |
I hope he feels better soon. It is so hard in an emergency situation to know what tests are needed and which are not. Mine always seem to get sick when the regular vet is closed. See if you can get the Care Credit card to help you cover the bill. |
I'm sorry he's in the hospital :( I hope he's going to be ok and wow on the bill so far -I didn't know they can charge you for 'what if's' and to me that seems just wrong and yes - taking advantage of people in crises ....vets know people will do about anything these days for their pets and this sounds like one of those kinds of vets.. ALL THE BEST and I hope they find out what's going on with him - |
Did they give you an estimate and make you pay it upfront? Lots of emergency vets do that before they will even treat your pet. Lady always seems to wait for weekends, especially a holiday weekend like this one, to get sick. |
They should only charge you an emergency fee for right now and then add on tests cost when they are made. What are his symptoms? Could be hyplycemia - if he is young. Was he eating right? Did you keep food down all the time for him? Other question is - did your breeder test him for liver shunts before you got him? I would stay at the vets - do not leave him. They will see him faster if you do. |
I hope Kobe will be ok. Please keep us posted. |
I'm sorry they did that. I hope things work out for you, but mostly I hope Kobe gets well. |
Thanks for all the comments! Well, they said he was a little dehydrated and had some irritation in his tummy. I have to give him antibiotics for the next 5 days. I just can't believe I paid 1500 bucks to find out. I paid the same amount at Kobe's reg vet when he got fixed and a couple of teeth pulled. But oh well, he seems a little better and I'm happy to have him back. :) |
You're in California, right? That probably explains the $1500 bill. Here in North Carolina an ER visit with hospitalization and tests runs about half that. |

Wow, that cost is unreasonable. I live in Riverside,CA and I have never paid that much for any vet bill. Sofia was spayed and had seven teeth pulled, got an antibiotic and pain meds for under $400, and she had to have it done in two surgeries. I think I would ask for an itemized bill. |

If your not comfortable with that vet, maybe someone on here could recommend a better vet in your area. Good luck with everything, I hope all goes well!! |

It sounds harsh, but I understand. They just had too many people who couldn't pay, but still told the vet to do expensive tests. Or lost a pet and then refused to pay. |
I hope your little guy is okay. I got insurance for Ruger. Haven't had to use it yet, but I guess I was thinking if he got sick I wouldn't have to worry as much about the costs. It was that, or get a credit card just for him and pay it off over time if I had to. We have an 24/7 pet emergency hospital here that's pretty reasonable, but I guess it's a lot like when you have to go to the ER. It's probably going to cost you about $1500 when you walk in the door. Keep us posted, both on Kobe and the bills. |
Pet emergency hospitals are very expensive...we have a great one here on Long Island, but it costs a small fortune when we have to use it. I hope they gave you an itemized estimate before they did anything to your pup...but the reality is..if your pup needs it, you are going to do it anyway...at least that is how it is with me. My prayers are with you and your Kobe. :animal-pa |

An office visit is $35 here in Pinehurst, $55 up in Raleigh. All the services are much more expensive. |
I'm so glad your baby is feeling a little better. Read this article...hopefully it will bring a smile to your face. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...oooo-much.html |

Holy Moly, I know this post is over a month old but our vet is registered with SPAY USA and to spay a pup here (small animal vet specialist) and pain pills will cost around 50-75 dollars. I'm sure our paychecks are substantially less too ;) |
I am glad your baby is feeling better. I don't understand how they can charge that much. |
I Live in California, and our ER visit with xrays, exam and meds was around $200 I think for $1500 a "tummy upset" and antibiotics he may not even have needed is a bit to extreme. |
