do you realize how totally tiny and immature his system is at this age and size ? You're really risking his life if you don't listen to what people have told you....Its common sense

I weighed him a couple weeks ago and he was 1.6...I just weighed him a few days ago and he is now 1.8...either way...yes he is too small.

Hmmm, okay. I have been a Vet Tech for 25 YEARS. I have worked in clinic, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Surgery, Dentistry, and Nutrition. I scored the highest grade on the Hills Nutrition Challenge at the Animal Hospital since it's inception. The hospital I worked at is a teaching hospital, so everything (all procedures, diseases, etc.) were discussed and evaluated in the greatest detail. I have saved many an animal's life by being acutely aware of and able to interpret symptoms and acting quickly to restore stability in animals experiencing life threatening consequences during their recuperation from trauma and/or surgery.

Also on this board, are many professional people. There are countless Vet techs, Nurses, Professional Breeders to name a few. And the group of experienced Yorkie owners, who give you the benefit of their many YEARS of experience owning, living with, raising, vetting, caring for, and loving this very unique breed of dog.

If you can find a vet with even a spec's worth of knowledge about this breed, compared to what you have right here, good luck.

All we do is give info to people to help them keep their dogs alive and healthy. When the majority of us say something is not a good idea such as running with a 10 week old puppy, this is not our opinion, this is fact. Many of us have seen the results when owners make the wrong choices and cause their dogs harm. It is not ever a good thing, and ends up causing the dog unnecessary, preventable injury and pain, and costing the owner money and time (for the vet).

Many of us have tried to help you and your puppy. It is certainly your choice to heed the info and warnings given, or just go do what you want, regardless of anything we have told you.

The thing is, who suffers in the end: the puppy, you, and us.

The puppy because he will have the injury.

You, because you will have to provide nursing care at home, and be cleaning him longer when he can't walk to go potty by himself because you decided running with him was fun.

And us, we suffer too, because out of all of these educated people here on YT, not one of us could figure out what to say to you to get you to understand and grasp the severity of the consequences your puppy will face when you choose to ignore our advice.

And we know, as you push your unrelenting will on this poor unfortunate dog who has no choice but to trust you, that you will learn by doing, at his expense, and then, only then, you will feel bad and think, I should have listerned. Look at my poor puppy now. And you may come on here and tell us, and seek advice, and we will help you still, but when we log off, we cry.
We cry for your puppy.
And we cry for you.

I'm also a very slow jogger, and we would never be going for super long jogs anyway! I would do my longer ones without him, but I think he could handle 2km? It's about 20 minutes of slow paced running

To be honest, we took Derby for walks before he had all his shots, but we honestly didn't know better. We just wanted to take him outside because we live in the smallest apartment in the entire world. We wanted to get him fresh air, and learn how to pee on grass- that kind of thing. We would walk him around the building (only patch of grass we had) and back. We made sure to keep him away from other dogs, and definitely didn't take him to any parks until he had all his shots.

But keep in mind that when Derby came to us at 8 weeks old, he was already around 3 or 4 pounds (he's 12 now~). He wasn't as small as your dog, and when i think about how small 1.6 pounds is? It seems very VERY fragile to me.

I hope you listen well to the people on this board. They have given me the best advice every single time. I had an unprofessional breeder, we have a Yorkie over standard, and we're not even sure he's a purebred. I have learned SO MUCH from this board, and my dog is happy and healthy because of the great advice and things I learn here.

Your puppy is a BABY! he's a very fragile baby right now. He's like a premature infant you needs extra attention and care. Keep in mind that he is not capable of doing everything right away. It will come in time, and may also depend on how much bigger he gets. He won't be able to run around for 2 hours like my 12 pounder if he stays so small- you know what I mean? Every dog is different and should be treated as such.

If you expect too much too fast, you're only hurting your baby.

No vet in the world would tell you it would be ok to take a puppy outside that is not innoculated.....if he did, it would be one that I wouldn't be going to again. But, then that is probably why you go to him, he tells you exactly what you want to hear.

You've opened threads asking questions.....why do you waste everyone's time? You choose not to listen and blatenly state such. What is even worse is that we continue to attempt to help you in hopes that you will put this puppy's welfare before your desires. I don't see that happening.

I will say if you continue on this path....this puppy will not live a long full life or at the very least will end up requiring major medical care. How sad for this puppy.

A bit of warning.....your asking questions and not paying heed to advice is now wearing thin....when you are need life saving of help for this puppy....you won't be receiving it.....people are getting tired of you wasting their time. A sad thing for your puppy.

:thumbup::thumbup:Well said:thumbup: Nat - if you don't realize that your puppy at 1.8 lbs shouldn't be out running a mile (and also considering the lack of puppy shots), then I am sorry, but you really shouldn't have this puppy. You need to be a responsible adult and care for the puppy properly or give it up for adoption to someone who can take care of it. I really hope you are just yanking people's chains and are not as irresponsible as you sound. Sorry this is kinda negative, but your puppy care ethics just irk me. :animal-pa

I agree, I have a very hard time believing that a vet okayed such a young puppy without full innoculations to go for a mile run! If that really happened, you need to get another vet.

I'm also pretty surprised that a puppy that young was able to stay focused enough to run for a mile. When I walk puppies, they are either going in every direction at once, or laying down for a nap in the middle of the sidewalk.

ANYWAY, the reason I am posting is to say that I have never been able to tire Thor out, even on rigorous six mile hikes. He loves running up the trail, back to slow ol' me, then back up, then back down... and then when we get home, he wants to play. So I really think it depends on the dog. I've been thinking about starting regular jogging with him. Of course, I will keep an eye on him and make sure he's not over-fatigued, has enough water, etc.

I find it hard to believe that a vet would okay the running too outside without all his shots, but anyways....

He is follwing you not because he wants too, but because you are now his mom. He would follow you to the ends of the world right now. You are looked upon him as his mom and care giver. He is looking for you for survival. You have to be the smart one to protect him. Be wise young mama.

I find it more than a little hard to believe that a 10 week old puppy would be physically capable of running an entire mile :rolleyes:...in the FL (or is it VA today?) heat. Seriously? I'm sorry, but I find this a bit far fetched, which seems to be the "norm" for the over all "DJ" situation in general.

Natnatt, did your vet say it was okay to bring him outside, or to walk him outside? Did they give you any guidelines about walking him on clean pavement? Sniffing other dogs' pee/poop? Drinking from puddles?

Do you realize how quickly a puppy weighing in at a 1.8 pounds can go down hill? You really need to listen to the people here that are answering your questions. No vaccinations....no outside.When I first got Levi, even after vaccinations, I made my friends use hand sanitizer to pick him up! I was on this forum for a long time before I ever even replied/asked anything. The reason being is that I read everything and tried to learn as much as I could about the breed. The people on this forum are very knowledgable about yorkies....some more so than some vets. Start paying attention to the advice...everyone is trying to help you and you are not letting them.....Rose and Levi

Natt Natt, you really should listen to these people. Your puppy is way too young for such activity. The people here at YT know their stuff.
