Anyone with hardwood floors? We are building a new house and I am thinking of putting hardwood flooring in the main area. I know that people with dogs don't normally put that in because it scratches the floor....but I am wondering if because a yorkie is lighter in weight....does it still do that to the floors? Anyone have experience with yorkies and hardwood? My yorkie does jump on the couch as well as she loves to run around and play. Any experience with hardwood and yorkies would be appreciated. |
My parents just finished a home with 80% hardwood floors. I would not recommend it..Lola is only 11-12# and she has scratched their floors ALOT! I hear about it every time I'm over there.."Your dog needs her nails cut...she scratching the floor"...even with her nail cut to the shortest length possible..the floor is still ruined... Not sure if real wood compared to the fake wood makes a difference?? |
Here in Florida they put in Ceramic tile. We put in hardwood floors and I wish I had done the tile. |
My entire house is hardwood floors except for the bathrooms and kitchen. Mine are original 1920s hardwood so they are durable and have multiple coats of polyurethane on them. There is no scratching on my floors, except in places where I dragged furniture (oops). I've had dogs for 10 years and have not finished the floors since 1999. |
We have hardwood floors throughout our house. No problems at all with Sophie. She is 4.8 lbs. We keep her nails trimmed and have never had a problem or a scratch with our Bruce Hardwood floors:) |
We put in distressed hickory hardwood floors....and if there's a scratch...you can't see it. :D Love, love love it!! |
I have tile floors but am considering one day laying hardwood instead. I would say go for it, just make sure your pup's nails are trimmed! Hardwood floors are beautiful! |
We have oak hardwood upstairs, nice thick wood. It's beautiful. Freeway was 22 pounds and never a scratch. Oliver doesn't spend much time up there, but he doesn't scratch it up either. I think it depends on the kind of wood you get. You really have to spend the $ and get something durable. |
Also use that polyurethane! I have hardwood floors throughout my house and have never regretted it. I have a yorkie and a Westie - the Westie is much heavier and he has never scratched the floors. Messes are MUCH easier to clean up. But I hate those 'dust bunnies' that I can now see! |
We have the fake hardwood floor and have no scratches (I think it's called laminate). :thumbup: yay for cheap floors and no scratches! :) |
We have hardwood in the kitchen and main hallway. Bailey hasn't damaged them at all - however, she slides on them alot. She'll walk on the runner and rugs whenever possible for traction. Whenever she gets excited and wants to take off and run on the hardwood, her hind legs spin just like the flinstones - we just say "yaba daba doooo" |
1 Attachment(s) I have all hardwood floors, it really depends on the type of hardwood you put down. Ours is the polyurethane coated hardwood and it is tuff as nails. Here's a pic of ours, as you can see no scratches and we have had yorkies for 12 years, as of now 7 running around. We bought ours from Red River Hardwood , its fantastic, durable wood. |
I have hardwood floors throughout my house...and glad I put them in. If they are scratching the floor I can't see it. I have gone through carpet, tile and painted cement..this is the best for me and my gang... |

We just finished a total remodel on our home. We wanted to make it animal friendly, so we used an Armstrong laminate called grand illusion. It looks great and is so easy to care for. If the dogs have an accident the world does not end you can just clean it up. It does not scratch. I am amazed at how much it can take. We have a pool and 5 children and countless friends in and out of our house daily. And after more that a year, you would think we just laid it. Its in every room except kitchen, laundry and baths where we have tile. The problems we foresaw with hardwood besides scratching was of course damage from pee. Every dog has an accident once in a while or they get sick, then your floor is ruined unless you happen to be standing right their cleaner and rag in hand. This was a great alternative for us, we love it. Hope this helps. |
