Yorkie's hair: Short or Long Which do you like for your dogs, long hair or short hair? I think I will choose short because they look much cuter on short and if it is long they may not feel comfortable while playing just like humans if they are in long gowns :teeth: What's your opinion? |
Penny is only 6 months old. We are letting her hair grow to about one inch off the grown. Her beard, lack of better word, we keep trimmed. Now we may not like the long look. We live in the country so the long hair may be short lived. I keep her combed each day, so far all goes well. |
I think it depends on the type of coat they have. My Jake and Maya both have curly coats and if they grow out they look like big powder puffs LOL. So I keep their hair short. Then Sky has a thick cotton coat so I keep his cut up to his body and Lily has a beautiful silky coat that I'm growing out. I must say I am partial to the long silky coat I think they look beautiful with their long flowing hair but it's a lot more work to groom.:D |
I love the long coats even though it is a lot of work. |
2 Attachment(s) Short! :) I just like Jackson to look neat... and when his hair grows longer, he just starts to look shaggy and scraggly. I think it all depends on their coat. Some Yorkie's can pull off the long hair and look beautiful but in general... I prefer short. Plus, we're outside pretty much every day in the warmer months so it's less maintenance for us and he is always so happy after he gets his hair cut! This is how I like him the best... and it works for us. :D |
Derby's hair is thin, and cotton/wiry-like if that makes sense? It's got a bit of wave to it, and every time we try to grow it he gets burrs in his coat from running around the park like a crazy-guy and we have to cut it short again. We've now opted to keep it short, but man am I ever dying to have it a bit longer. I've given up on growing his hair out, but I'm now trying to grow his face hair to see if I can get that nice Yorkie face. We do it ourselves, so it's very hard... and it never looks -just- right. Practice will make perfect though! We don't have the money for dog-grooming. |
We keep Gypsy's short. We are terrible at doing it ourselves. She never holds still for us. The funny thing is she keeps lots of compliments on how good she does at the groomers. |
I keep Owen's hair pretty short.. but not to his body.. It's long enough where you can put your fingers through it a little bit. He has a pretty curly coat. I think it depends on the dog's coat like jnsasha said! :) |
Ive tried growing Tuckers out and it "grow's up" not down..lol. So I keep it short. I like 'em clean and neat..I agree with Brister, it starts to look scraggly when it gets a certian length. I give lots a credit to those that can grow it long. :) |

I keep the pups hair long in the winter, and cut short in the summer. It is just too hot in the summer for them to enjoy their walks with long hair. |
I have to say...I like it long. That's one of the many reasons I like Yorkies and their gorgeous mixes... :) If I didn't, I'd go for one of the short-coated breeds. |
on my girl I like it longer but my lad I like shorter.:p |

We are trying to grow Jack's hair out. He is almost 10 months old now and we have not cut it yet (other than his foo-man-chu otherwise known as his beard). His coat is getting longer and it really lays beautifully. I think its funny though since its so long on his head, we will pull his bangs up in a clip (usually brown, black or clear) to keep the hair out of his eyes and everyone thinks he's a girl. |
I think the long coats are beautiful! However, no matter how many times I try to let my girls grow, we always go short. Maddie has an eye issue and I find keeping her face and "bangs" trimmed short work best for us. Cooper is such a rounder, I keep her hair short to keep all the junk she gets into out of it.:) |

I agree with this whole heartedly. My silkie coats I am growing long as I possibly can. Bernie has the cottony coat and I had his really long and cut it into the puppy cut. His face looked like a little teddy bear when it was first cut, but the girl shaved his nose down! I even told her not to and she did it anyway. I was ticked. His cottony coat is a nightmare to keep mat free, but you know what, I don't care, I'm growing it back out anyway. I just love that long hair. Heck, that's why I fell in love with yorkies to begin with![/I] |
We keep all three in short puppy cuts, it's easier, cooler & I love having them look like puppies!! |
I keep Roxie short. She got a little bushy over the winter, but just had her spring haircut last week. I just think she looks cuter with short hair. |

Long Long Long! I fell in love with this breed while watching the dog shows on animal planet and seeing how gorgeous and regal they look with their beautiful show coats! Baileys might not be show length but its pretty long and I would NEVER in my life cut it, i feel like so many people keep the coats cut that the beauty of the breed is lost so often. I have even had people come up to me and say "O wow is that a long haired yorkie? I didnt know their was such thing." LoL I just wouldnt have a yorkie any other way except long, to me its WAY worth the work. |
I let Joey and Tank's hair grow out from the middle of 2009 until last night. Joey's hair is very thin and fine, and it really doesn't get long at all. There's still a difference in how it is now, and his "beard" was pretty long before I cut it. His body hair is what I can't get to grow very long. Tank, on the other hand, has quite thick hair that gets long. It was SO beautiful, but SO difficult to care for!!! Last night I finally cut it, because it's warming up, and because he's a boy, haha. He is so incredibly handsome!!! I will try to get a picture up sometime. I would definitely say short! I can already tell that it's going to be a breeze caring for short hair. I used a short 8 on both of them, so they still have a little bit, but it's short enough that a quick brush every day is all it's gonna take. With the long hair, it was quite a hassle to brush Tank's hair, and it got matted no matter how often I brushed it...plus he would pee on his belly hair - eew! |
Honestly, I can't even seem to keep Derby's hair on the semi-short size, as even tonight~ he got into yet ANOTHER burr bush somehow. Damnit Derby! lol! I hate shaving him! Does anyone have any ideas on how to get burrs out of hair that matts easily? (he has a cotton/wiry coat) |
Love it short! Much easier to clean and keep nice. Additionally, it keeps them nice and cool in the summer and spring :) And it gives you an excuse to dress them up too! |
I have one of each. My boy has a soft coat and dark hair that is kept shorter (but not puppy cut short). My girl has a nice silk coat and I keep hers long. |
I use to love Josh's hair long, but now I love his hair short. Now I can spend more time playing with him than grooming him. He loves to play, so I know he agrees with my decision to keep his hair short. |
Short all the way! I've entertained the thought of actually keeping Cody's coat long, but I have very little experence with dogs with longer coats and I know they need alot of time for grooming which we don't have. Cody is going in for his first haircut Friday and I couldn't be more excited! We are just very active in the summer months and a haircut is less trouble. |
1 Attachment(s) If anyone wouldn't mind please post some photos of your babies. I want to grow JoJo's hair out but he is 13 weeks old and I want it to grow fast...lol... I cant tell what kind of coat he has any suggestions? take a look at the most recent pic of him :) |
I like long hair. My sofia is so small, 2.5 lbs, I think she would look bad with too short of hair. |
3 Attachment(s) Yorkielover916: Puppy coats are very hard to tell at first because it does change... but here is Derby |
