I'm a bit like a mother hen..ive always liked everyone snuggled up with me at bedtime, whether it was my babies,toddlers, dog, cat..it hasnt done any of them any harm!
I pushed my bed against the wall so my babies could sleep with me and not roll onto the floor. Did the same again when my first dog went senile so i could stroke and reassure her through the night.
Ive had about 30 years of broken sleep and ive survived! A few months of sleepless nights when you have a tiny baby, or puppy is to be expected. Catch up in the day if you can...sleep when they sleep. Easy once you get used to it. :)

Definitely not at this young of an age but eventually, like in a couple of months when it is fully vaccinated.

I feel that by getting up with him all night you are setting a habit that will not be easy to break. So IMHO I would put him in a playpen in a separate room with his cuddle buddy and a pee pad and some food and water, and close the door. You can even put a T shirt that you have worn, in bed for him to sleep on. The smell of you will be comforting to him.

The whole problem lies in that he is only 7 weeks old and should still be with his mother for another 4 weeks and you would not be having this issue.

Why on earth do people take puppies this young, and not realize that they are taking home an infant, that has the same needs of any infant.

Look I'm not going to argue this point. It is my opinion that the puppy would be just fine if he were in a crate on a table by the bed so he couldn't roll or get kicked off the bed. He would still be eye height and you could keep a good eye on him all night.

And don't be ridiculous I wasn't implying that a "human" baby would go into a dog crate. But it would be just as foolish in my opinion to put the baby on the bed in ANY carrier, because it could get hurt.

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post, so forgive me if I'm putting this in the wrong place. With that said, I have a question for NatNatt.

I've read some of the backstory and saw that DJ lost his mom early. What did she die from? The reason I'm asking is because your veterinarian needs to be aware of any possible congenital issues that might arise and keep an eye out for early signs/symptoms. Some hereditary issues CAN be treated successfully if caught early enough.


Did your vet do a fecal sample and check DJ's heart and lungs? What were the results?

He has only really gained an ounce since you first posted about his weight? Is that normal? I would think he should be gaining more than that at this age.
I still hope and pray if he ends up bigger than you expected you will still love him.

Who is arguing? You and I don't agree, so what? I am fine with it. :D I have friends on here that I will disagree with on board, it doesn't mean we respect each other any less.

But you were the one who asked if I would also put an infant in a carrier (means dog carrier the way you said it) on my bed. That to me was ridiculous.

I have owned dogs all my life, been a reputable, good breeder for over 25 years and raised lots of puppies and retrained rescues.

I have also been a mother for 21 years raising an adopted son and many foster children and babies and I have NEVER had a dog, pup, or human baby fall off of my bed when sleeping with me.. Nor have I ever rolled onto a baby or dog/puppy in my bed.

This is WHY I feel my opinion counts, because I also have experience.

Oh my, soooo tiny. Be ever so watchful of that blood sugar. Pennie's was dropping daily, sometimes 2 times a day even though I was feeding her.

Pennie was 8 weeks old on the dot the day I picked her up. I will NEVER take a yorkie pup under 12 weeks again. But she was 1.7 pounds the day I brought her home. We went right from the breeder to my vet for a check up.

She never gained, she actually dropped to 1.3 pounds by week 14. We would get her up, then back down, a roller coaster from hell!

Have him checked for coccidia and giardia as well as for worms. You will need to repeat the giardia test if the first one is negative. Up to 3 times, 1 week apart.

Please trust me, they can have it and show NO signs, except not eating or lethargic. It took us 4 weeks to finally get a positive (2 tests), and 5 weeks of force feeding and $1,000.00 in tests and vet bills trying to find out what was so wrong with her.

I did not think she had giardia because she had no symptoms of it, no diarrhea or blood in stool.. I have seen it enough to know so i was shocked when it came back pos. but I sure was happy!! something we could treat..

Now at 6 months she is almost 5 pounds!!! haha we thought she was going to stay teeny, so glad she grew and gained finally..

How much did he weigh when you got him? I am still shocked a vet approved him being shipped, but I suppose I shouldn't be.

I must of missed the post, but someone said you named him DJ? does that stand for something?

Oh yeah I forgot to ask, Was your puppy hand fed by his breeder after his mom died? And how old was he when she died? What did she die from? Sorry so many questions, but I don't recall seeing anything about that and i am curious,,,;)

stepping in only to share....I read jmdt's post to mean a baby carrier - which may have been mis-read - and all opinions matter.

those of us who had (human) kids probably used Bassinets and always had them right in our rooms - I know I did......then moved baby into their own room with a crib.....but remember many nights I had them right with me in bed.....it's a bit different with tiny puppies because of their size - but it all boils down to how we sleep and what we want them to do as they mature

I'm a VERY light sleeper - just a change in breathing or movement would wake me up. I still sleep like that :(....

I can remember nights my sons would just come in my room and stand there (wondering how to wake me up for a drink or whatever) :)and I'd SENSE them .....Same with my girls - they sleep with me - always have ....but back when my husband was alive I made sure they always slept curled up with me - he was a heavy sleeper so all those nights were pretty tiring....it was like I never went into deep sleep.....the drawback about a puppy sleeping with someone is they COULD 'go' on the bed - I was lucky - never happened in my case....

mommadog1....way to go on the Adoptions and foster kids - that's something to be commended for ! (I'm adopted and was one of the lucky ones- I LOVE LOVE LOVE my parents)

so now....kiss kiss you 2 :p you both have good posts from what I've read ...if we all did everything the same things would be boring pretty quickly around here....and the different opinions help because what may work for one person may not for others.....

I went thru coccidia with my Chanel and it was awful. IF you don't catch it right away with a tiny puppy - you can easily lose them ...(my breeder of course denied it but she was NOT a good breeder once she had our $$) - the best thing is KNOWLEDGE and back then - I'd not heard of it till I was in the ER at 2 am on a Sunday.

Just because it hasn't happened to you personally...doesn't mean it still can't happen.

And no I did mean infant carrier. You interpreted dog carrier.

Yes I also used a bassinette for my 4 kids when they were little. Never slept a wink because I was listening for breathing. Anyone with knowledge tells us never to put a baby in bed with you. They could get caught up in the blankets or yes it is possible to accidently roll on them while you are unconcious.
And I am also happy that mommadog has adopted and had foster children but that doesn't make my experience with my 4 children and my 4 babies a mute pont.
I just didn't think thast natnat could watch out for these problems with the crate on the bed. She has no experience with this kind of stuff as a breeder would. This is why I thought it would be safer for the pup to be on the floor or on a table next to the bed. As I would hate to read a post that said, "Help my baby fell off the bed" :eek:

A moot point? I would never try to up myself over another parent. I have ONE child, I have never given birth. We are BOTH mothers with experience. And every parent parents differently, it doesn't make one person better then the other.

I am done with this with you. Lets just go on and go onto something else. You made good points with DOG rearing, and so did I and many other people.

We take advice all in and then we decide what works for us, and what is best for us as individuals.

PS: I no longer foster parent, and I rarely take rescues in any more..
