I hate to admit it, but I too, got my puppy at 6 weeks of age. I didn't know it was wrong or against the law at the time and it was definitely A LOT more work than I had planned for. I was very lucky that I was living with my ex boyfriend at the time and we worked opposite schedules... so when I went to work in the afternoon, he was coming home from work and I could pass her off to him. He didn't feed her, because he wanted to associate feeding time with me and that did help with our bonding. The main issue was, the "breeder" for lack of a better term, said she was eating Beneful twice a day so that's how I continued to feed her. Not long after, Olive got sick and I took her to the vet. Turns out she was almost hypoglycemic and the vet said I should be feeding her 4-5 times a day. He also gave me prescription wet food to mix in with her dry food. She also woke up every 3 hours throughout the night. I set up a barricade of pillows and covered the floor of that area with pee pads and put her bed in it. She refused to sleep alone (and still does) so she slept in the bed with me and I would put her down on the pads every 3 hours to go potty. Now, she is 13 weeks and VERY attached to me. She is more like another limb than a shadow to me. It took her about a month to sleep through the night, and even after that, she still wakes up between 6 and 7am to be fed and go outside. It was hard work and I'll know better for next time, but I don't regret it. Olive is very sweet and well adjusted - she loves everyone. I'm not trying to dole out any advice - I'm just sharing my experience. Whether or not I did the right thing, I blame on naiveté and lack of knowledge. I am thankful that I found this site to keep me on the right track from here on out; so I can make the best choices possible for Olive.

You need to crate him. You need to get a small crate just big enough so he doesn't feel cramp, but small so he can separate a spot for pooping. Dogs like to keep their area clean...they learn that from their mom...I don't know if yours got a chance to learn that...but try it anyways. CRATE him and if he cries/whines. You HAVE to let him be, otherwise, he will think that whenever he cries or whines you will go get him. It's hard to ignore them, but you gotta do it. Hope this helps...;)

Since he is so young, he can't hold his pee and poo in very long, so bring him to the pad every 30-45 minutes. at night, 1-2 and maybe 3 hrs. I wouldn't try to stretch it to 3 though...

If you take the advise given you may be able to train him but ....at 6 weeks - and in bed with you - what hes doing on the floor will soon be in bed (going to the bathroom).....

The other thing is - he can FALL OFF THE BED or you could roll on him unless you're a very light sleepr

You don't want that to happen so try crate training

I've not done it but since so many have had good luck with it you may want to try it ,,,,,he's misssing his family and mom badly right now

Put a shirt or something with your scent on it in there with him -

Please don't put him in the bed. If he falls off he can get hurt bad or you can roll over on him and kill him. He is so small you would never know until you woke up. Don't expect it to get any better for months. It is just like bring a newborn baby home.

it is isn't it ? one difference is newborns don't stick toys in your face at 2 am :)

ps - you also need to get this puppy to the vet for a check up - carry him since he's so young and probably hasn't had any vet care yet .... and ask them to check him out for parasites etc. He had a long trip & came from a not so good enviornment if I recall

Thanks for everyones advice, it is very much appreciated because I do want to take care of my baby the right way. I will put his create on my bed and get a warm bottle and put it in his create and make sure I put him in his playpen every 2-3 hours where his puppy pad is to go to the bathroom. I have noticed with him he WILL NOT poop or pee on my bed or when I am playing with him. He waits until he gets on the carpet to do it. He wont poop on the puppy pad and he pees SOMETIMES on it. I guess I wont let him on my carpet anymore until I am watching him 100% and wont take my eyes off him.

I know it can be hard to tell an adorable pup that that he cant cuddle up in my arms. He likes to sleep in my arms and on my neck it adorable...but I wont do it anymore until he is trainned fully like you all said. I have also noticed that when he cries/whines in his playpen/kitchen it stops sooner and sooner everytime because he is getting use to it and knowes I wont let him out just because he is crying/whinng.

I am bringing him for a check-up in a few hours so I gotta run and get ready. Ill keep you posted on how it went.

Good for you - glad to see you're open to suggestions - and good luck at the vet. Since he's so tiny - you want to read about hypoglycemia too - in very young small puppies it can happen very quickly

edited to add - are you still going to be away for 9 hours a day ? I ask because I worry about him being alone that long

This thing sounds AWESOME. I had a little heartbeat pillow for Harley the first several weeks but had I known about this, I'd definitely have had one!

Nat Natt - I strongly suggest you get one of these for DJ. Not only for his comfort, but for your sanity! You my as well face it - the next several weeks are going to be very difficult on you. In no way can you take it out on him....consider him a newborn baby as he practically is. It was your decision to bring him home so early and now you'll need to suck it up, put your own needs aside, and do whats best for your baby. Although it will be challenging at points, you will receive so much joy in the end. But ONLY if you stick it out and be persistent on the training. Just don't expect too much too soon.

Why would you put the crate on your bed? It could fall off!!! Good luck at the vet today. Hope all goes well with your little one.

ok ill get it today. You think I can get it at a pet store? If so Ill be able to runb by there today and grab it with heat packs.

Its just me in bed and its a very small kennell so it wouldnt fall off the bed I would def have enough room if for some crazy reason it didnt i have a table I can put it on next to the bed.

I would put him in a playpen in another room. JMO but you are setting yourself up for a long time of getting up with him if you keep doing this.

Make sure he has 20 to 30 minutes of good exercise before bed to get him good and tired. Leave food and water and a pee pad in the pen, put him in another room and close the door.
