allergy update Quote:
I have had my pup for 1 month now. The symptoms seem to be staying pretty much the same: itchy throat, runny nose, headache-no hives or asthma. I am toweling him off 1/day with a wet rag, washing him in a shampoo (that doesn't have perfumes, irritants, etc.) 1/week. I wear a mask when I clean the room where his crate stays. He is not allowed in bedrooms. I take claritin every day and some homeopathic drops for pet dander that I purchased at the health food store(they actually do help some). I hate being allergic to my dog! It is sad.:( Does anyone know if allergy shots work? |
thanks for your post! Do you just purchase reg. cham. tea, brew it, then wash the yorkie in it? |

I'm pretty sure it's not your yorkie unless you don't have a purebred and its mixed with some shedding breed. Good Luck though! |
It sucks that you are allergic but I feel your pain. I am also allergic but to dog's saliva. I had minor allergic reaction to the 2 year old female yorkie after she was sleeping in bed with me. Then afterward I got Samy and he is not allowed to sleep with us in the bedroom. He has his own room next to ours so he is only a door away. We let him in bed on the weekends but not under the covers and I always make sure to wear something on me when hugging him. I also wash my hands but I do not overwash. He licks me all over the face but so far I have not experienced any allergies. Just basically keep your house clean, your dog clean, and your bed clean ... But if you are allergic to something else other than the dog's saliva, the posts above are very helpful. Also, you can get allergy shots I think 3 times in your life and be done with any sort of dog allergies. I might do this later if my allergies reappear. Good luck! |
Allergy shots do work.. they were recommended by my doctor but I have not taken them yet as I live outside Canada now.. when I am back will most likely take them if my allergies reappear. Consult with a doctor and get the shots.. Let us know if it works out! |
Rocky gives me allergies sometimes too, it got a bit worse over time and only when he kisses my nose. I take Allegra D sometimes when its bad. But I don't mind that much. I would cut my own head off before I give my Yorkie away due to allergies. Claritin is over the counter, try it, see how it works. Bottom line, go to a doctor, they will run allergy tests, very simple, and will tell you what exactly you are allergic to. In my case, I am very allergic to dust, cats, and at last dogs, but dogs the least in my case. Good luck. |

Another good point was mentioned here and that is about products we use on our dogs. Not only can we get an allergic reaction to them, so can the dog. I darn near lost a show girl about 7 years ago because of a new dematting spray I was using. i suspect it was the cedar oil in it, I hadn't read the label. Cedar Oil is bad, I won't use products that have it in it. |
Thank you so much. |

I have allergies although I am only slightly allergic to dogs. Mold and cats are my main enemies. LOL Then everything else down from that. It is very true that dogs and that includes yorkies are not allergy free. They are less because they do not shed and have less dander, but still not allergy free. I do get the shots although they will NOT make you not allergic to dogs. I was told that the they are different and they have not made it so you will be "cured" from a dog allergy although cats will improve greatly to be around. I also take Allegra as all over the counter meds make me tired and those work very well! I will sometimes have a problem and I do have to make sure the dogs are bathed every two weeks tops (but hey you want them nice and shiny anyway). When you are around an allergen every day (only if it is not health threatening or anything) you will build up to it adventually. This is the same as the shots that they are actually injecting me with the stuff I am allegic to! When I get around other dogs my allergies go crazy so I do have to double up on my allergy meds when I go to meet ups or anything like that as I have no immune system built up to that dog. Hope that might help and give you hope!! |
